'Clean Air Zone' Trial To Be Launched In Delhi's Nehru Park

NDTV2 days ago
New Delhi:
In a step towards exploring science-driven solutions for cleaning Delhi's air, Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and PWD Minister and area MLA Parvesh Verma on Sunday visited Nehru Park to review the feasibility of creating a pilot Clean Air Zone.
The Delhi government is evaluating whether the installation of outdoor air purifiers across public parks can create micro-climates of significantly cleaner air, particularly during increased AQI days, said Sirsa.
He said the pilot project is part of a larger exploratory study that could lead to Delhi's first Clean Air Zone, if found viable.
Similar Clean Air Zones could be considered at Connaught Place, Khan Market, and other high-footfall locations. "These would be undertaken via Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) partnerships to avoid burdening public finances," the minister said.
"We are conducting a study. The technology has shown promise in limited applications, and we want to understand whether it can work across larger green zones like Nehru Park. We aim to ask people if the technology is fit to work or not in their feedback," said Sirsa.
"This is part of a proactive approach - testing innovation before scale, and only where it truly benefits people," he said.
The 85-acre Nehru Park has been identified as a potential pilot site where 150 advanced air purification machines may be installed, subject to further analysis.
These machines, already tested at select locations such as ISBTs and petrol stations, have previously demonstrated a capacity to reduce PM 2.5 levels in localised environments.
Parvesh Verma, PWD Minister who is also the area MLA, underscored the government's commitment to holistic infrastructure and environment upgrades.
"The Delhi Government, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, is working tirelessly to transform the capital. I want to thank the Prime Minister for the Rs 1,000 crore aid provided to rebuild, repair and upgrade Delhi's roads and infrastructure," he said.
"Sirsa is constantly on the ground, personally overseeing every development and pollution-control effort. His commitment is unwavering. Together, this government is working day and night to fulfil the PM's dream of a Viksit Delhi," he said.
Senior officials from the Environment Department, NDMC, and PWD accompanied the ministers during the site inspection, which included interaction with morning walkers and joggers to gather feedback.
The study aims to determine whether such technology can consistently lower AQI levels by up to 50 per cent within designated areas and thus enable safer use of public spaces throughout the year.
Each proposed purifier is over 9 feet tall and uses advanced filtration technology to capture harmful PM 2.5 particles. If implemented in the future, these could cover a 400-600 square meter radius and offer year-round relief to walkers, joggers, and children using the park.
However, deployment will depend entirely on the results of this technical and environmental feasibility study currently being conducted, said an official.

Country needs three reforms: Maharashtra governor

COIMBATORE: Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Tuesday said taxpayers should not be put under pressure and they should be encouraged. Radhakrishnan was addressing a GST Day 2025 event in SNR Auditorium at Nava India in Coimbatore. He said after the introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST), the country's tax revenue increased. Currently, the revenue increased to Rs 22 lakh crore, and the GST revenue in the Coimbatore zone increased by more than Rs 3,000 crore. 'These funds help implement various development projects across the country,' he said. He said the country needs three reforms -- namely judicial, tax and electoral reforms. 'When the One Nation and One Election is implemented, the election expenses will also come down. Reforms are also needed in the income tax department. Those who kept thousands of crores of rupees in black money are getting away with it. They are not punished. No society will progress without eradicating corruption. Those who pay taxes honestly should not be put under pressure. They should be encouraged,' said Radhakrishnan. Dinesh Purushottamrao Pangarkar, principal commissioner, GST Executive Commissionerate, Coimbatore, said when the GST was implemented, the GST Coimbatore zone earned a tax revenue of Rs 1,105 crore. Now, the zone earned a tax revenue of Rs 3,906 crores. Later, Radhakrishnan presented awards to entrepreneurs who paid GST honestly. Addressing reporters, he said criminals should be punished. At the same time, harassing innocent people should be avoided. The police should abandon the trend of punishing an innocent person as a criminal. 'When I took charge as the governor of Maharashtra, I demanded that electricity tariffs be reduced. The Maharashtra state govt set an example by reducing electricity tariffs. I request the Tamil Nadu govt to reduce electricity tariffs,' said Radhakrishnan. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Doctor's Day 2025 , messages and quotes!

‘Damaged public image': Congress leader Vasoya sends defamation notice to MLA Italia over bribery allegations

Congress leader and former MLA from Rajkot's Upleta, Lalit Vasoya, on Tuesday sent a defamation notice to newly-elected AAP MLA from Visavadar assembly, Gopal Italia, alleging that the leader 'damaged his public image' by sharing a purported sting operation video showing Vasoya bribing an AAP leader, even as the Gujarat unit of AAP has slammed Vasoya stating that they are 'ready to face the legal battle'. The Congress leader has sought an apology and Rs 10 crore in damages while giving Italia 10 days to respond, as per the defamation notice, a copy of which is with The Indian Express. The notice has been sent to Gopal Italia through a registered post. Rajkot district Congress president Vasoya, in his notice, alleged, 'While campaigning for the Visavadar bypolls, you (Italia) and your party leaders damaged my public image, through a fake stunt, stating that I bribed an AAP worker. My public image has been damaged as you shared the fake video on social media platforms. To compensate for such an act, Rs 10 crore should be paid within 10 days, and if you fail to do so, legal action will be taken against you in the court.' Hitting back at the Congress leader, AAP State General Secretary Manoj Sorathiya said, 'We are ready to face legal battle. We have all the evidence, including the CCTV footage showing Congress leader Vasoya bribing AAP leaders to work against the party in the Visavadar assembly bypolls'. 'We have also filed a complaint about the bribe incident with the State Election Commission and submitted all the necessary evidence,' Sorathiya added. Sharing details about the incident, Sorathiya alleged, 'Initially, the Congress was not even active in the Visavadar bypolls. There was a direct fight between BJP candidate Kirit Patel and AAP candidate Gopal Italia. The Congress, however, played as the B team of the BJP and was bribing our leaders to do anti-party activities'. Sorathiya claimed, 'The Congress leaders bribed AAP president of Visavadar taluka, Mahendra Dobariya, and told him to stay within the party while engaging in anti-party activities. Later, based on Vasoya's instructions, Dobariya called AAP leader Hardev Vikma and offered him a bribe of Rs 2 lakh'. 'Dobariya also asked Vikma to come to a private hotel in Visavadar town on June 18 afternoon, a day before the Visavadar bypolls. Vikma informed us about the call. Acting on our instructions, Vikma went to the hotel and reached room number 205, where he received cash Rs 2 lakh from Vasoya. During the meeting, he was also told Vikma to make a video against Gopal Italia and the party,' Sorathiya alleged. 'We have got the CCTV footage of the entire operation and even the hotel room. Lalit Vasoya and Manoj Dobariya were present in the room. Following this incident, we complained to the State Election Commission. Our party leader Hardip Vikma also gave his statements to the Election Commission, but no action has been taken so far,' he added. 'After Manoj Dobariya's anti-party activities came to the fore, the AAP suspended him from the party', sources said. Sorathiya added, 'We have got enough material against Lalit Vasoya… so we are ready to face all the legal battles. We will submit all the evidence in the court against him. We will not apologise,' he added further Expressing his support for Vasoya, Congress party spokesperson Manish Doshi told The Indian Express, 'Lalit Vasoya is a strong leader of our party… He is a former MLA and was also part of the Patidar movement. He was one of the in-charges of the Visavadar assembly seat'. 'He has served a defamation notice to Gopal Italia after finding that the latter damaged his public image. We support Lalit Vasoya… he is our leader,' Doshi added. Despite repeated attempts, Congress leader Lalit Vasoya and MLA Italia did not respond to the phone calls for their remarks over the issue.
