Manah hosts global museum conference to boost Oman tourism
Held under the patronage of H E Salim bin Mohammed al Mahrouqi, Minister of Heritage and Tourism, the three-day conference has brought together over 42 researchers, academics, and experts from 21 countries. The event aims to highlight the role of museums in driving tourism, preserving cultural identity, and fostering investment in the cultural economy. It also seeks to explore how academic partnerships and digital technologies can enhance the visitor experience and position museums as vibrant educational and cultural hubs.
Dr Hamad bin Mohammed al Dhuyani, Chairman of NRAA, said the conference aims to establish strategic partnerships between public and private institutions in Oman's museum sector. 'This event promotes international collaboration through peer-reviewed scientific papers and paves the way for future conferences that will highlight integrated work across the cultural, scientific, and intellectual domains,' he said. An exhibition showcasing the role of Omani museum institutions is also being held alongside the conference.
Eng Al Yaqzan bin Abdullah al Harthy, Director General of the Oman Across Ages Museum, noted that museums today are key players in sustainable development. 'They serve as mirrors of national identity, promote intercultural dialogue, and contribute significantly to the creative economy by making history an immersive and interactive experience,' he said.
The conference features six specialised workshops covering critical topics, including digital technologies, museum management, community engagement, and the development of cultural content. These sessions aim to facilitate both intellectual exchange and practical learning.
The agenda addresses several key themes, including the role of museums in tourism, the impact of archaeological missions, legislation protecting national heritage, and the involvement of international organisations. Discussions will also focus on how museums contribute to economic growth, resource management, tourism promotion, and sustainable investment.
Additionally, the conference will explore the cultural and educational functions of museums, their collaboration with educational institutions and support for scientific research.

Musandam unveils Oman's largest mural
Khasab – In a spectacular showcase of culture and environmental awareness, Musandam has unveiled the largest mural of its kind in Oman – a massive graffiti work now displayed on a mountain face at the entrance of the governorate. The 70m long and 14m tall mural was created by Omani artist Abdulaziz al Shehhi over 40 days. More than 500 cans of spray paint were used to create scenes depicting the rich marine ecosystem that defines Musandam. In line with its strategy to integrate art into tourism development, the governorate has announced plans for a Graffiti Art Festival as part of its upcoming Musandam Winter events. The festival will bring together local and international artists to transform public spaces into outdoor galleries, using Musandam's environment and heritage as their canvas. This initiative complements preparations for Musandam International Diving Festival, scheduled for September. Both festivals – graffiti and diving – form part of a broader vision to position the governorate as a destination where creativity, heritage and environmental awareness converge. Musandam's efforts aim to promote sustainable tourism by leveraging cultural expression, offering new experiences to residents and visitors, while preserving the natural landscape as a source of inspiration.

Oman celebrates International Seafarers
MUSCAT, JULY 2 The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) celebrated the International Day of the Seafarer here on July 2, 2025, under the auspices of Dr Said bin Mohammed al Saqri, Minister of Economy. In his keynote address, Capt Mazin bin Hamad al Rashidi, Director of Maritime Transport at the Ministry, underscored the significant role seafarers play in the global economy. 'Our celebration of the International Day of the Seafarer is a reminder of their central and indispensable role in the international economic system, despite the significant challenges and sacrifices they endure to ensure the steady flow of goods and maintain the continuity of the global economy. We reaffirm our deep appreciation for the pivotal role our esteemed seafarers play in sustaining supply chains and global trade, and for their essential contributions to maritime safety and security—benefiting all nations and strengthening the global economy,' he stated. According to the Director, the maritime sector has witnessed notable progress over the past year. 'The Ministry has worked on developing the Maritime Law by adding modern investment-related provisions in alignment with Oman Vision 2040 and in harmony with international maritime conventions, with the aim of keeping pace with global maritime transport developments and enhancing the business environment in the Sultanate,' he said. The official added that Ministry has also accomplished significant strides in digital transformation. 'In the realm of digital transformation, the Ministry has provided over 95% of seafarer services electronically, enabling seafarers and relevant entities to complete transactions and verify certificates and competencies efficiently and with high quality.' The Ministry has also signed various international agreements, 'On the international cooperation front, the Ministry signed 9 agreements and memoranda of cooperation in the field of maritime transport, along with 16 memoranda of understanding for the mutual recognition of seafarer certificates, and 10 agreements with international classification societies, all of which enhance Oman's competitiveness and credibility within the international maritime community,' he said. In terms of regulatory operations, the Ministry inspected 74 foreign ships at Omani ports, in addition to issuing over 100 navigation permits for vessels operating within the Sultanate's waters during the first quarter of 2025. Moreover, the Ministry delivered 9,950 maritime services through its ship registration departments across various regions, alongside issuing 315 maritime activity permits and 188 sailing certificates. The Ministry also launched the Seafarer Complaints Service, which aims to protect the rights of seafarers and ensure secure and fair working conditions. The one-day event included various panel discussion and working papers, in addition to a parallel exhibition and a maritime life and activities photography competition.
