CNN host marks milestone amidst Oman's wonders

Observer21-06-2025
Veteran CNN journalist Richard Quest recently marked a significant personal and professional milestone with his visit to Oman — his 100th country visited. Known worldwide for his distinctive voice and as the host of Quest Means Business and Quest's World of Wonder, Richard described the visit as 'a very special trip,' made even more unforgettable by the dramatic landscapes of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar.

In an exclusive email interview, Richard shared, 'Oman was a fitting choice for number 100. Perched atop the cliffs of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, I couldn't think of a more beautiful place to celebrate joining the century club.'
Richard's visit to Muscat was primarily to moderate the keynote session titled 'The Shape of Things to Come' at the inaugural Advantage Oman Forum. The forum brought together key global and regional leaders to discuss investment, sustainability, artificial intelligence and future economic trends.
Reflecting on the event, Richard said, 'It was fascinating because there was a refreshing honesty in the discussions. People spoke freely and the dialogue around Oman's positioning on the global stage was encouraging.'
During his brief but action-packed itinerary, Richard ventured deep into Majlis Al Jinn, one of the world's largest cave chambers. 'It was surreal, otherworldly,' he recalled. 'Just realising you're going inside Mother Earth like that — vast, deep and dramatic. Looking down and seeing my cameraman as a mere speck was unbelievable. That, for me, was a true highlight.'

Richard also indulged in Oman's rich culinary traditions, developing a newfound love for lamb and particularly praising Shuwa, the slow-cooked spiced lamb dish traditionally prepared underground. 'It was tremendous. The hotel explained the whole process and the result was simply delicious,' he said. 'I loved the blend of Levant, Middle Eastern and international flavours in Omani cuisine.'
Praising the warmth of Omani hospitality, Richard noted, 'It's the watchword here — from the airline to the hotels. There's an effort to position Oman as a unique, classy destination. I think that recognition is significant.' He also lauded Oman Air and the ongoing developments at Muscat International Airport, commending CEO Con Korfiatis for driving remarkable changes. 'There's potential here — not just as a tourism destination, but also geopolitically,' Richard added, 'especially given Oman's long history of internationalism.' Richard took home more than just memories. 'Yes, I bought my traditional souvenir spoon,' he chuckled, 'but it's the experiences — like seeing rose water distillation or sailing on a dhow — that will stay with me.

Oman's versatility is astounding.' Muscat now takes centre stage in the next episode of Quest's World of Wonder, which will air on CNN International in August. The episode showcases the capital's dramatic coastlines, vibrant traditional souks and rich maritime heritage.
'Oman has long been a gateway between East and West,' Richard reflected 'and this trip reminded me why.' Looking forward, Richard shared that Angola will be his 101st country. 'I'm running out of countries — but not really,' he laughed. 'There's still about 95 more to go, but they do get harder as you go down the list. Oman, though, was a proud choice for number 100.'

RO 1.1m Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Park to open in Al Dakhiliyah

AL JABAL AL AKHDHAR: The Wilayat of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate continues to solidify its status as a premier tourist destination through the implementation of high-quality tourism and recreational projects. Foremost among these is the Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Park under construction in Seeh Qatnah, alongside the recently inaugurated Celebration Square, which hosted the opening events of the Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Festival 2025. Shaikh Sultan bin Mansour al Ghafili, Wali of Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, stated that the wilayat is witnessing tangible developmental progress, reflecting an integrated vision to enhance infrastructure and improve quality of life. He emphasised that these projects align with the goals of Oman Vision 2040, transforming the wilayat's natural and cultural advantages into sustainable development opportunities with direct social and economic impact. In a statement to ONA, he noted that the Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Park project is progressing rapidly, with completion exceeding 85 per cent. The park is set to officially open to visitors in August 2025 at a cost exceeding RO 1.1 million. Spanning 20,000 square metres, the park features integrated recreational and service facilities, including a 1,000-square-metre children's play area, sports pathways and investment zones housing a café, a shop, and an electric games section, in addition to prayer rooms and restrooms for men and women. The park also includes a multipurpose open-air theatre and 5,000 square metres of green spaces planted with 150 trees and 400 shrubs, alongside natural vegetation to enhance the site's aesthetics, making it a year-round recreational destination. He affirmed that these projects bolster the wilayat's tourism appeal, provide community platforms for national events, support small and medium enterprises, and stimulate local growth by generating jobs and boosting commercial activity. He added that Al Jabal Al Akhdhar, in coordination with the Al Dakhiliyah Governor's Office, ensures these initiatives serve as pillars for comprehensive, sustainable development that fosters innovation and strengthens Omani identity. Future plans include additional initiatives to attract qualitative investments in eco-tourism, smart agriculture and community services, emphasising collaboration between government entities, the private sector and local communities to ensure holistic and sustainable impact, he added. The park features integrated recreational and service facilities, including a children's play area, sports pathways and investment zones. On his turn, Eng Mohammed bin Ali al Wardi, Director of the Projects Department at Al Dakhiliyah Municipality, highlighted that the park project extends the governorate's vision for developing public spaces and improving urban environments. He noted that the newly inaugurated Celebration Square in Seeh Qatnah is a key cultural and tourism infrastructure project, designed as a multipurpose venue harmonising with Al Jabal Al Akhdhar's geography. The square features a main performance area, parking, restrooms and family rest zones, making it an ideal venue for seasonal and national events. It has become a focal point for visitors to the Al Jabal Al Akhdhar Festival 2025, hosting cultural, artistic and recreational activities, as well as exhibitions of local crafts and agricultural products, thereby supporting entrepreneurship and local economic growth. Al Wardi affirmed that these projects align with a broader vision to develop Al Jabal Al Akhdhar as a sustainable tourism hub, balancing infrastructure development with environmental preservation to reinforce the governorate's position on Oman's tourism and investment map. — ONA

Omani youths bring traditional flavours to life during khareef

Salalah, July 19 As the Khareef Dhofar Season draws thousands of visitors to the mist-covered hills and green valleys of Dhofar Governorate, a new kind of local energy is rising — not just from the earth, but from the youth of the governorate, who are seizing the season's momentum to showcase their culinary heritage and earn extra income. Across Salalah and surrounding wilayats, visitors can now find dozens of pop-up food stalls run by young Omanis offering traditional dishes such as madhbi, maqadeed, ma'jeen, mashakeek and freshly baked Omani bread. For many, these are more than just meals — they're cultural encounters served hot, by the very people who grew up with these recipes. What makes this year different is the surge in part-time initiatives by university students and recent graduates. With support from families and small business licences, many are turning their skills in traditional cooking into seasonal income streams. Their stalls — often set up near tourism hotspots like Ittin Plain, Ayn Razat and Haffa — combine fresh ingredients, authentic techniques and a warm welcome that has quickly become a highlight of many visitors' trips. 'I never imagined I'd run a food stall', said one young vendor, flipping skewers over glowing coals. 'But people love trying something real — something from here. And it helps me save for my studies.' The appeal goes beyond economics. For many young Omanis, these ventures offer a platform to preserve and promote their cultural identity. Whether they are grilling madhbi over hot stones or preparing ma'jeen the traditional way — by slow-cooking preserved meat in rendered fat — they are carrying forward practices passed down through generations. Visitors are drawn not only by the rich flavours but by the experience itself. Watching the preparation of food outdoors, breathing in the aroma of spices and charcoal; and eating under open skies brings a unique charm that restaurants often cannot match. Dhofar Municipality and local tourism authorities have welcomed the growing presence of youth-led food initiatives, viewing them as part of a wider effort to boost community participation in the tourism economy. Several temporary stalls have received permits and hygiene support; and young vendors are being encouraged to adopt eco-friendly practices as well — including using biodegradable packaging and managing waste responsibly. Beyond the income, the experience is building confidence, skills and entrepreneurship. Many young vendors say the Khareef Dhofar Season has opened their eyes to future possibilities — from launching permanent food businesses to participating in national food festivals. As Khareef Dhofar Season 2025 reaches its peak, these small stalls tell a bigger story — of ambition, heritage and youth rising with the season.
