Morgantown Post 2 falls to Beckley Bash 5-4 to bow out of Legion State Tournament
MORGANTOWN – Morgantown Post 2 head coach Jacob Goodnight didn't think his team played a clean game on Friday night in an 11-4 defeat to Charleston Post 65. That effort seemed to spill over slightly on Saturday as Post 2 fell to Beckley Bash Post 35, 5-4, in an elimination game under the sun. With the defeat, Morgantown's summer comes to a close on Day Three of the 2025 American Legion Baseball State Tournament. Both teams earned ten hits in the contest. The Bash was led by Ashton Cochran, who went 3 for 3 with an RBI. Mason Chaney also secured a three-hit game for Morgantown in four at-bats with two RBIs. 'It was a good game of baseball, but our errors came back to hurt us in the end,' Goodnight said. 'They made some errors also, but they got out of the jams when they needed to, and our mistakes seemed to carry over for a couple of batters, and they eventually got runs out of that. We put that three spot up but let them respond by doing the same thing, just a tough day for us today.' Beckley took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning but Post 2 responded in the top of the third as Eli Boggs doubled home Brance McCune to tie the game. Kane Williams singled to put two men on for Morgantown, and Chaney delivered with a two-run single to give Post 2 a 3-1 lead. But as Goodnight alluded to, Beckley punched back with a three-run inning of its own in the third to pull ahead again, 4-3. Post 2 came up empty in the fourth, and that opened the door for the Bash to extend the lead, 5-3, on a fielder's choice in the infield. Morgantown cut the lead in half on a single by Nate Wolfe that brought Williams around to score, but a double play ended the inning, and Post 2 would fail to find the equalizing run before it was too late. 'It took a while for us to bring it together this summer, but everyone got comfortable down the stretch and we won some games how we knew we could,' Goodnight said. 'We were a little bit tight this weekend in the tournament, but these guys let their talent show the last few weeks, and that's why we were able to be successful. We just asked them to play hard and keep showing up, that's all you can do.' Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M LB Scooby Williams with his player profile
As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, recruiting rankings out of high school, and projected role under head coach Mike Elko. Scooby Williams is one of Elko's first-year transfers who contributed immediately, bringing familiarity to the defensive scheme led by Jay Bateman, who also joined from Florida. Paired with York, they provide a veteran presence on the field with solid depth behind them. Williams played much of the 2024 season with an injury, yet still managed 10 starts across 11 games. Over that span, he finished fourth on the team in tackles (43) and tackles for loss (7.5). If Williams returns fully healthy, his sideline-to-sideline range and blitzing ability from the linebacker spot give the coaching staff flexibility to disguise defensive looks. Preseason Player Profile Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2021) The former four-star prospect coming out of high school was a tweener and elite edge rusher, tallying 107 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, and 15 sacks across his sophomore and junior seasons. He played in the Mississippi State All-Star game and was selected for the Army All-American Bowl. Depth Chart Outlook Linebacker is loaded with young talent, and at some point this season, we could see a rotation next to team captain Taurean York. However, Williams is projected to start the season alongside York, and barring any surprises, he should hold down that role throughout the year. Lewis Hamilton of Great Britain and Scuderia Ferrari walks in the Pitlane after not making it to SQ2 during Sprint qualifying ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Belgium at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps on July 25, 2025 in Spa, Belgium. More Photo byThis is the first time that Hamilton has missed out on qualifying in the top 15 for a grand prix this season. After his elimination, the seven-time champion took accountability for the shocking result. "Well it is what it is, that's my mistake, so I'm just really sorry to the team for all the hard work, all the testing, you know, the filming day that we did, and all the preparation, and then you come here and you don't even make it through Q1, which is unacceptable. I'm really sorry," Hamilton added after the session. Hamilton came into this season with high expectations, but he hasn't managed to achieve a podium finish at a grand prix. This race weekend seemed to carry over the poor first half of the season into the first race of the second half. "I was the same as I was for the rest of the weekend. We made some changes, the car didn't feel terrible," the British driver said. "I think it was not so easy to... It was even tough for us; we had to put a second set on just to get through Q1. So, not great. "And then from my side, another mistake. So I really got to look internal. I got to apologize to my team because it's just unacceptable to be out in both Q1s. It's a very, very poor performance for myself."
