Kelleher's Brentford move 'will benefit' Republic of Ireland

BBC News03-06-2025
Republic of Ireland assistant John O'Shea believes Caoimhin Kelleher's move to Brentford "will benefit" Heimir Hallgrimsson's side.Kelleher's move from Premier League champions Liverpool to the Bees on a five-year deal for an initial £12.5m, which could rise to £18m with add-ons, was confirmed on Thursday. The 26-year-old made 67 appearances for the Reds, but O'Shea believes becoming the number one at Brentford will aid his progress on the international stage."He has had success and whatever happens next, hopefully he's playing. It's as simple as that," O'Shea said."Obviously it's not an easy thing for him to do. He's proven the quality that he has every time he's been asked to go in as the number one for Liverpool."I think that's what the whole of Europe and the whole of the world has seen when Caoimhin has been in goal for Liverpool. So, I'm sure we'll get the benefit of it."O'Shea was speaking ahead of the Republic's friendly against Senegal in Dublin on Friday. He hopes other Irish players will follow Kelleher in making summer switches to get more game time, if the right move arises. "Every scenario will be different. Like the manager [Hallgrimsson] has always stressed, we'd love our players to be playing," O'Shea, added."That's what you want in a team because obviously time-wise, when we get together, the limited time period we have, the fitter the players are, the better it will help in the game."

Niamh Gallagher hails Ireland's resolves in Wales win

Niamh Gallagher hailed the way Ireland were able to withstand early Welsh pressure during her side's battling 27-10 win over the hosts in their 2025 Six Nations Women's Summer Series opener. Tries from Sophie Barrett, Robyn O'Connor, Hannah Clarke, Jemima Adams-Verling and Ellie O'Sullivan-Sexton were enough to ultimately seal the triumph for the team in green, but they did not have things all their own way at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, Caerphilly. Ireland spent much of the opening 10 minutes inside their own 22 thanks to a period of early Welsh dominance. Wales also twice got themselves within five points of their opponents, at 10-5 and 15-10, through scores from Savannah Picton-Powell and Seren Singleton. And Gallagher, who played in Clarke for Ireland's third try during the second half, was delighted that their defensive efforts allowed them to kick-on towards victory. 'Getting a win to start the tournament is unbelievable, start as we mean to go on,' she said. 'There's so much more to see from us. It was a tough one, we were in our half for most of that game. 'We just thought we needed to get it out of our area and play up field. And then when we did get it up there, we showed them what we could do.' Amidst the driving rain, the encounter proved to be a physical test for both sides, with neither team letting up in the tackle. It was a gameplan Gallagher expected from her team's opponents and explained the importance of both forcing Wales into making errors, whilst keeping their own standards high. 'We knew that Wales were going to be a physical team,' she continued. 'We wanted to match that and make sure that we kept the ball and play on our terms. 'It was tough that Wales did stick to being dominant, but we knew we had to get up in their faces and try and make them make mistakes. 'We knew we had to be clinical in our own areas too and I think we were able to do that.' Next up for Ireland is a clash against France, who also won their opening match beating Italy 46-5, and Gallagher believes her side have got the tools to more than put up a fight. She added: 'We've got an excellent back three that we just want to get the ball out to. 'We're also getting there when it comes to securing our breakdowns which is good but of course, we can always look to improve our defence.'

Euro zone investor morale hits three-year record as recovery broadens

BERLIN, July 7 (Reuters) - Investor sentiment in the euro zone improved more than expected in July to hit its highest level in more than three years, a survey showed on Monday, as the bloc's economic recovery broadened. The Sentix index for the euro zone rose to 4.5 from 0.2 in June, beating the 1.1 forecast from analysts polled by Reuters and marking its third consecutive monthly increase. The current situation sub-index improved notably but remained in negative territory, rising by 5.8 points to -7.3, while expectations climbed 2.8 points to 17.0, also marking a third straight rise. The survey of investors, conducted between July 4-6, showed the recovery was broad-based across regions, with the United States economy making particularly strong gains after lagging in previous months. Germany, Europe's largest economy, also showed continued improvement with its overall index reaching -0.4, its highest since February 2022, as the current situation rose for a fifth straight month. The survey indicated the European Central Bank's room for further interest rate cuts may narrow as the economic upturn strengthens, though inflation pressures remain contained for now.
