Gerard saw his approach shot to the green roll away into the bunker.
And as TV cameras panned to find his ball, a small head was seen poking out from the grass.
Sky Sports commentator Henni Zuel initially thought the animal was a snake.
But former PGA champ Rich Beem quipped: "That's a snapping turtle!
"That will rip your finger off."
Jason Dufner watched on bemused as the turtle began to scamper across the green.
It showed off a surprising turn of pace as it made a dash for the water.
And the reptile even received a warm round of applause from the watching spectators as it returned to the lake.
One fan laughed on X: "Notice he's a lot faster than the golfers."
Another wrote: "I love this sport."
Turtle pees all over golf course as caddie carries it off the green at Houston Open
It's not the first time a turtle has caused carnage on the links this year.
During March's Houston Open, a caddie picked up a turtle to remove it from the green.
The animal started to urinate an excessive amount of waste while the caddie dashed to move it to a safe distance.
It was a day to remember for Jhonattan Vegas on Thursday, with the Venezuelan taking the clubhouse lead in North Carolina.
Vegas shot a classy 64, including five birdies on the back nine.
He leads by two shots from Gerard and Aussie Cameron Davies.

Indiana Fever president deletes social media account after being slammed by fans for bizarre Caitlin Clark comment
Indiana Fever president Kelly Krauskopf has reportedly deleted her X account and is laying low after fans took exception to a bizarre comment she made about Caitlin Clark. The Fever are in a rough patch of form and some fans have been looking for any excuse to throw shade at the front office. In a recent press conference, Krauskopf gave her detractors some perfect material, when she claimed she wanted to make the Fever 'as big as Apple', with some believing she put star player Clark down in the process. Speaking to the media, the president of basketball and business operations in Indiana said: 'We want to sustain the growth and the interest level in the franchise. I mean this is about the Indiana Fever. 'Yes, we have a foundational players in Caitlin Clark... and Aliyah Boston, and we're going to add to that. But I want this team to be a leader in the country, and an enduring brand... like Apple or something. We have a real opportunity here.' Fans immediately jumped on the comment, with one claiming: 'Enduring brands lean into their visionary. Apple became a global icon by making Steve Jobs both its visionary and its star.' Fans have claimed she is 'fumbling' Indiana's opportunity of having the biggest name in the W Another added: '95% of your brand is Caitlin Clark,' and a third said: 'They are fumbling this opportunity so hard. I think CC goes overseas and becomes the global superstar she could be if things don't shift by the end of her contract.' A fourth summed up fans' feelings by posting: 'Kelly... I'd say 75% of Fever fans go where Caitlin goes. Get mad at me, but the moment CC leaves Indy is the moment I quit buying Fever tickets. This is so stupid, she has no idea how to capitalize on the moment properly. You build around CC. She is the brand right now.' Seemingly in a bid to get away from the blowback to her comments, by Friday night Krauskopf had deleted her X account altogether, with an error message in its place. As of Friday night, the Fever president had deleted her account on the social media site X A win against the Atlanta Dream took the Fever's record back to .500 for the season, with 10 wins and 10 losses - but it has been far from plain sailing. Clark has, at times, been injured, and in recent days has struggled for form on the court, with her teammates stepping up instead. Kelsey Mitchell had 25 points and three assists on Friday, while Aliyah Boston had 19 points and Sophie Cunningham contributed 16 off the bench.

Adolis Garcia, Wyatt Langford homer to lead Rangers past Astros
July 12 - Adolis Garcia and Wyatt Langford clubbed home runs while Jack Leiter pitched effectively into the sixth inning as the visiting Texas Rangers banged out a 7-3 victory over the suddenly reeling Houston Astros on Friday in the opener of a three-game series. The Rangers improved to 4-4 on their season-long, 10-game homestand. They did so by pouncing on Astros right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (2-4), who continued to struggle with inconsistency following his return from a two-season injury absence. McCullers labored through a 36-pitch top of the first inning and never fully recovered. Langford extended the opening frame with an infield single that loaded the bases with two outs and set the table for Evan Carter, whose two-run single got the Rangers on the board. Carter claimed he was hit by a McCullers pitch earlier in that same at-bat, but Texas lost its replay challenge. After limiting the damage to a pair of runs in the first and working around a one-out walk in the second, McCullers came undone in the third. Garcia blasted a 425-foot home run to straightaway center with one out in the frame, extending the lead to 3-1 with his 12th homer. The Rangers then delivered another timely two-out hit, this one coming from Jonah Heim, whose double eluded Astros right fielder Cam Smith and scored Carter and Jake Burger. Heim was erased trying to reach third on the hit, but the damage was done. McCullers allowed five runs on six hits and two walks with five strikeouts over three innings. Leiter (5-6) allowed a run-scoring groundout to Christian Walker in the bottom of the first and a two-run homer to Victor Caratini in the fourth that pulled the Astros to within 5-3. But Leiter ended the second, fourth and fifth innings with strikeouts, all on called third strikes. He allowed three runs on five hits and four walks with six strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Langford socked a two-run homer, his 15th, off Astros reliever Ryan Gusto in the seventh. The Astros have dropped four consecutive home games following a 5-1 road trip that put them a season-high 20 games over .500. --Field Level Media
