Microsoft says some SharePoint server hackers now use ransomware

Indian Express4 days ago
A cyber-espionage campaign centered on vulnerable versions of Microsoft's server software now involves the deployment of ransomware, Microsoft said in a late Wednesday blog post.
In the post, citing 'expanded analysis and threat intelligence,' Microsoft said a group it dubs 'Storm-2603' is using the vulnerability to seed the ransomware, which typically works by paralyzing victims' networks until a digital currency payment is made.
The disclosure marks a potential escalation in the campaign, which has already hit at least 400 victims, according to Netherlands-based cybersecurity firm Eye Security. Unlike typical state-backed hacker campaigns, which are aimed at stealing data, ransomware can cause widespread disruption depending on where it lands. The figure of 400 victims represents a sharp rise from the 100 organisations cataloged over the weekend. Eye Security says the figure is likely an undercount.
'There are many more, because not all attack vectors have left artifacts that we could scan for,' said Vaisha Bernard, the chief hacker for Eye Security, which was among the first organisations to flag the breaches.
The details of most of the victim organisations have not yet been fully disclosed, but on Wednesday a representative for the National Institutes of Health confirmed that one of the organisation's servers had been compromised.
'Additional servers were isolated as a precaution,' he said. The news of the compromise was first reported by the Washington Post. The spy campaign kicked off after Microsoft failed to fully patch a security hole in its SharePoint server software, kicking off a scramble to fix the vulnerability when it was discovered. Microsoft and its tech rival, Google owner Alphabet, have both said Chinese hackers are among those taking advantage of the flaw. Beijing has denied the claim.

Whirlpool of India shares slip 2% post Q1 results; Should investors hold?

Shares of Whirlpool of India declined on Monday after the company reported a drop in revenue for the first quarter of the current financial year (Q1FY26). Further, analysts remain cautious due to the promoters' proposed stake sale and the lack of clarity on future leadership. The household appliances maker's stock fell as much as 2.32 per cent during the day to ₹1,366.6 per share, the biggest intraday fall since July 8 this year. The stock pared losses to trade 1.4 per cent lower at ₹1,379 apiece, compared to a 0.14 per cent decline in Nifty 50 as of 9:55 AM. Whirlpool of India Q1 results The company reported a marginal increase in its consolidated net profit to ₹146.08 crore for the June 2025 quarter. It had posted a net profit of ₹145.25 crore during the April-June quarter of the previous fiscal. US-based Whirlpool Corporation's India unit's revenue from operations slipped 2.58 per cent to ₹2,432.32 crore during the quarter under review. It was ₹2,496.86 crore in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. "Despite a very significant decline in industry of air conditioners and refrigerators in Q1 2025-26 versus a year ago due to a poor summer and onset of early monsoon that affected all players, Whirlpool was able to actually grow profits by keeping its volume decline minimal via continuing to gain market shares in the refrigerator and washer category in April-May," the company said in its earning statement. Analysts on Whirlpool of India Q1 Centrum Broking expects the company to post a 13 per cent sales CAGR and a 170 basis points improvement in Ebitda margin over FY25-28, leading to a 25 per cent CAGR in profit after tax. Strong balance sheet, negative net working capital, and healthy cash flows are key strengths, Centrum noted. Notable achievements over the past six quarters include strong execution, market share gains, and an improving margin profile. However, the parent entity's proposed stake reduction from 51 per cent to 20 per cent is likely to remain a near-term overhang, it said, maintaining a 'Add' rating with a target of ₹1,525 for the stock. Whirlpool reported revenue short of Nuvama's estimates, due to a weak summer season and early monsoon, analysts said. While business and financial performance remain strong, the parent company's impending stake reduction and the resulting lack of visibility on new ownership remain key overhangs, Nuvama said. Nuvama has raised its FY26-28 EPS estimates by 1-3 per cent and expects revenue, Ebitda, and PAT to grow at compound annual rates of 8-13 per cent and 16 per cent, respectively. The brokerage revised the target price to ₹1,380 (earlier ₹1,340) and the rating was retained at 'Hold'.

Tech Titans Slash Jobs Amid AI Shift: TCS, Microsoft, Intel Lead Major Layoff Wave

A fresh wave of layoffs is sweeping across the global tech landscape as major firms including TCS, Microsoft, Intel, Meta, and Panasonic restructure their operations amid the growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) and shifting market demands. TCS Layoffs Rooted in Skill Mismatch Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest IT services company, is reducing its workforce by approximately 12,000 employees, or around 2 percent of its global staff. Interestingly, the company clarified that this move is not directly linked to AI advancements. In an interview with Money Control, CEO K Krithivasan stated, 'The layoffs are happening because of limited options to redeploy employees who do not match current project requirements.' He emphasized that the company remains committed to hiring and training talent. However, he acknowledged that placing some roles, particularly mid- to senior-level professionals, remains a challenge. TCS has invested in upskilling its workforce, training over 550,000 employees in foundational digital skills and about 100,000 in advanced technologies. Yet, Krithivasan admitted that some experienced professionals are struggling to progress beyond the initial levels of training, making redeployment difficult. Microsoft Cuts Jobs Despite Strong Earnings Microsoft has also been trimming its workforce, letting go of more than 15,000 employees in 2025. An additional 2,000 staff, considered underperformers, have also exited the company. This move comes despite Microsoft's strong financial performance and record-high stock prices. In a company-wide memo, CEO Satya Nadella acknowledged the emotional toll on employees, noting, 'I understand how difficult this period has been for everyone.' He explained that the restructuring is essential for long-term alignment as Microsoft invests nearly $80 billion into AI infrastructure. Intel's Massive Workforce Reduction Intel is implementing one of the largest job cuts this year, with plans to eliminate around 24,000 roles — nearly 25 percent of its workforce. Announced during its quarterly earnings, the layoffs are part of a larger strategy to streamline operations following miscalculations in demand forecasting. New CEO Lip-Bu Tan stated that the company is aiming to become 'leaner and more efficient.' Alongside the job cuts, Intel is also cancelling planned factory developments in Germany and Poland and shifting some operations from Costa Rica to Vietnam, impacting 2,000 employees in Costa Rica alone. Meta Scales Down Reality Labs Meta has made new cuts within its Reality Labs division, affecting teams behind products like the Supernatural fitness app. Though the company didn't disclose numbers, it confirmed the layoffs are aimed at focusing more sharply on future mixed reality experiences. Earlier this year, Meta also reduced its global headcount by 5 percent, primarily targeting underperformers. Panasonic Joins the Trend Japanese electronics giant Panasonic is eliminating 10,000 jobs globally, half of which are in Japan. CEO Yuki Kusumi explained that the decision is part of a strategy to reduce costs and shift resources toward future technologies such as AI. 'We're moving away from slower segments like TVs and certain industrial products,' Kusumi said, expressing regret over the layoffs but stressing their necessity for long-term growth.
