Hankook & Company Group has introduced a "Global Language Principle," mandating the use of English in major meetings attended by organization heads.
The tire giant said the guideline aims to enhance communication efficiency, as 68 percent of the group's 50,000 employees are non-Korean.
Under the new policy, meetings must be conducted in English, including provided written materials. Additionally, English is required for internal documents and communication between overseas business sites. However, local factory workers may use both English and their native language, and external documents for government agencies and legal matters are exempt from the rule.
The new policy aligns with Chairman Cho Hyun-bum's emphasis on English as the primary language for communication, citing efficiency and strengthening the company's global operations.
'The Global Language Principle is expected to eliminate communication barriers and enhance collaboration among employees,' said Oh Yoon-jung, head of the Proactive Culture Team. 'We plan to gradually expand the mandatory use of English in decision-making.'
Since assuming office in 2021, Cho has led a data- and AI-driven transformation strategy. To support employees, the company has introduced AI-powered translation services, including an interactive AI assistant and an internal messenger. These services, launched last year, were part of Cho's AI Transformation initiative, which received government recognition in October.

Korean internet giant Naver said Tuesday that it has acquired a controlling stake in Spain's largest consumer-to-consumer platform, Wallapop, in a move to strengthen its foothold in the European digital marketplace. Naver said it acquired an additional 70.5 percent stake in Wallapop for 377 million euros ($436 million), bringing its total ownership to 100 percent. The Korean tech firm initially invested 115 million euros in 2021 and followed up with another 75 million euros in 2023. Wallapop boasts over 19 million monthly active users and facilitates peer-to-peer transactions across a wide range of categories, from everyday goods and electronics to used vehicles. The company has steadily grown its presence in the Iberian Peninsula and is expanding into southern European markets, including Italy and Portugal. The two companies have explored collaboration through technological integration, and Naver said it decided to acquire full ownership to unlock deeper synergy and accelerate growth. 'Wallapop has emerged as a formidable player in Spain's C2C landscape,' said Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon. 'With the latest acquisition, we plan to combine Naver's technology, spanning search, advertising, payments and artificial intelligence, with Wallapop's user-friendly service to elevate the platform's capabilities and value proposition.' Naver has been actively investing in Europe since 2016 through funds managed by Korelya Capital, a venture capital firm established by Fleur Pellerin, former French Minister for Digital Economy. The company said it intends to use Wallapop as a strategic hub to deploy its technological expertise and e-commerce infrastructure across the continent. It will mark a significant step in Naver's global C2C expansion, adding Europe to its growing portfolio of platforms in North America, Korea and Japan, including Poshmark, Kream and Soda. 'With Wallapop's extensive product listings and rich storytelling potential, we aim to deepen our understanding of European consumer behavior and enhance the diversity of data in our AI ecosystem — ultimately strengthening Naver's global competitiveness,' Choi added.

In a letter to employees, Kwon and Lee set a vision to transform Hanwha Life into a 'life solutions partner,' offering services that go beyond traditional insurance and are tailored to each stage of a customer's life. To achieve this, the new CEOs emphasized the need to strengthen artificial intelligence capabilities, calling AI essential for navigating the tech-driven transformation of the financial sector. 'As AI accelerates the arrival of a hyper-personalized era, the insurance industry must also deliver individualized solutions based on a deep understanding of each customer's life,' they said. The two leaders also stressed their commitment to expanding Hanwha Life's global business. This year, Hanwha Life made a strategic investment in Indonesia's Nobu Bank and acquired a controlling stake in US brokerage firm Velocity Clearing. Both deals mark milestones for both the company and the Korean insurance industry as a whole. On Tuesday, the co-CEOs visited all 30 floors of the company's headquarters in Seoul's Yeouido district, greeting and encouraging the firm's 1,800 employees. The leadership change follows the departure of former CEO Yeo Seung-joo, who is moving to Hanwha Group to head its management support division. The dual CEO structure returns after its suspension in 2019, when Yeo became the sole CEO. Kwon, formerly CEO of Hanwha Ocean, is expected to oversee overall operations, while Lee, previously CEO of Hanwha Life Financial Services — a wholly owned subsidiary responsible for the firm's sales force — will focus on insurance strategy and core business development.

Bipartisan bill aims to create presidential committee for master planning, offer financial support for next-gen steelmaking tech Korea is launching an aggressive policy push to rescue its steel industry from mounting global pressure, unveiling a bipartisan bill aimed at helping domestic producers hit hard by a 50 percent US tariff and a surge of low-cost Chinese products. Announced Monday by 106 lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties, the proposed "K-Steel Act" outlines a long-term industrial strategy that frames steel as a vital base for national security and economic resilience. 'Korea's steel industry has grown rapidly since 1970. But today, it faces an unprecedented crisis, caught between the global push for carbon neutrality, a flood of cheap Chinese imports and steep tariffs from key trading partners,' lawmakers said in explaining the purpose of the bill. They warn that failure to act would leave Korea exposed on multiple fronts. A shrinking domestic steel base could ripple across its broader industrial ecosystem, threatening other sectors from shipbuilding to electric vehicle development. 'This bill is about both survival and transformation,' said Rep. Eoh Kiy-ku of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea and co-chair of the National Assembly Steel Forum. 'With bipartisan support, we plan to pass this quickly and follow up with additional legislation if needed.' Steel remains a pillar of Korea's manufacturing economy, accounting for 4.8 percent of national output and supporting more than 430,000 jobs. But that foundation is under threat. Despite a recent Korea-US tariff deal lowering duties on most goods to 15 percent, the US will maintain a 50 percent tariff on Korean steel. At the same time, the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, set to launch next year, will impose extra costs on Korean steelmakers exporting to the EU unless they decarbonize fast. Korea's push comes as other major economies, including the US, EU and Japan, have already begun ramping up public support for their own steel sectors. From the US Inflation Reduction Act to EU climate subsidies, governments are blending industrial policy with climate action in a bid to secure supply chains while hitting net-zero targets. What's in the bill? The K-Steel Act lays out a comprehensive policy framework that would give the government a more direct role in shaping the industry's future. Central to the proposal is the creation of a presidential committee tasked with crafting five-year master plans and annual action roadmaps to steer the steel sector through economic and environmental challenges. To support the industry's green transition, the bill includes a wide range of financial incentives. These include subsidies, low-interest loans, tax breaks and production cost support for companies investing in hydrogen-based and other low-emission technologies. It also introduces 'green steel zones' -- designated areas where permitting and regulatory processes would be streamlined to encourage investment and innovation. The legislation also strengthens Korea's defensive trade measures. It calls for tighter rules of origin, curbs on low-quality steel imports and expanded authority for the government to counter unfair trade practices. In cases where market-driven restructuring proves insufficient, the government would be authorized to step in with financial and regulatory support, including temporary exemptions from antitrust laws for mergers deemed necessary to stabilize the industry.
