JEDDAH — King Abdulaziz University has completed an innovative research project that uses AI to monitor violations of emergency lanes on highways in real time. The system uses the 'Raspberry Pi' device, which employs advanced computer vision techniques.
The project utilizes the 'YOLO' algorithm to detect vehicles encroaching on designated emergency lanes, with the model trained on a customized dataset of images. It is a low-cost, highly efficient solution ideal for integration into smart city infrastructure, traffic management agencies, and government authorities.
By supporting unobstructed emergency lanes, the project aims to improve response times during emergencies and ultimately save lives.

Saudi Arabia and China sign executive program to strengthen cultural collaboration
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — The Ministry of Culture and the China-Arab Cultural and Tourism Cooperation Research Center signed on Sunday an executive program aimed at further strengthening collaboration between Saudi Arabia and China in the cultural field. The executive program was signed by Deputy Minister for Research and Cultural Heritage Affairs Dr. Maha Abdullah Alsenan, and Vice President of Beijing International Studies University and Member of the Joint Committee of the China-Arab Research Center for Cultural and Tourism Cooperation Cheng Wei in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture in Diriyah. The executive program, taking place in parallel with the 2025 Saudi-Chinese Cultural Year, reinforces joint efforts in cultural areas. Under the program, the two sides will jointly carry out research projects to enhance the quality of cultural research submitted and collaborate to identify and compile cultural content related to each country held in national archives. In addition, the Ministry of Culture will collaborate with the Chinese side to hold joint conferences and support mutual visits and exchanges between cultural researchers from both countries to discuss common cultural issues. The program also includes support for research exchange operations, facilitating visits by Saudi researchers to Chinese universities and research centers, as well as by Chinese researchers to Saudi universities and research centers. It provides both sides with specialists in cultural fields, offers support in the research fellowship program, and provides consultative support. This executive program comes within the context of the Ministry of Culture's commitment to promoting international cultural exchange as one of the objectives of the National Culture Strategy under the Saudi Vision 2030. This is also an extension of the activities of the 2025 Saudi-Chinese Cultural Year, which aims to consolidate the close relations between Saudi Arabia and China in various development fields, particularly in the cultural field, which has witnessed significant growth and development in recent years.

Saudi efforts to boost innovation pay off
RIYADH: Support provided by Saudi authorities for scientific research, innovation and university teaching have been credited for recent achievements by innovators in the Kingdom. Official figures show that 8,029 patent applications were submitted in the country in 2024, an increase of 13.3 percent on the previous year. In addition, 31,834 trademarks and 1,578 industrial designs were registered, and 4,355 patents were published. Investment in research and development in Saudi Arabia increased to SR22.6 billion ($6 billion) in 2023, a 17.4 percent increase compared with 2022. Recent examples of Saudi innovators honored with awards for research and innovation at international events included ophthalmologist Dr. Saad Al-Anzi, who won the grand prize at the Geneva International Exhibition in April this year for inventing a cost-effective surgical tool for cataract operations, while six other Saudi innovators received global awards at the event and 134 received global medals. And 39 students from King Abdulaziz University received a global award at the IENA Expo for ideas, inventions and new products in Germany last October.

49% of Saudi internet users spend 7 hours a day online
Saudi Gazette report RIYADH — Approximately 48.6 percent of internet users in Saudi Arabia spend seven hours or more a day using the internet, according to the "Saudi Internet 2024" report, published by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission. The report highlighted continued growth in demand for digital content and e-services. According to the report, peak usage during the day occurs between 9 pm and 11 pm. The internet usage in the year reached its highest levels in the month of March. The weekly day when people using the internet most is Saturday. The report indicated that the internet is mostly used at home with a percentage of 87.9, and the usage during travel comes next to it with 79.3 percent, and then at work with 41.7 percent. As for the type of devices used, mobile phones topped the list reaching 99.4 percent, followed by computers 50.7percent, and tablets 37.5 percent. Regarding operating systems, Android accounts for 55 percent of phone usage, compared to 45 percent for iOS. Windows dominates computers at 91.1 percent, compared to 7.5 percent for Macintosh devices and 1.4 percent for Linux. The report highlights the digital transformation taking place in the Kingdom and the significant role the internet plays in various aspects of daily life, whether in work, education, or entertainment.
