See the 3 African unicorns that made TIME's 100 Most Influential Comapnies, list
Nigeria's Moniepoint and Flutterwave, alongside South Africa's Tyme, appeared in TIME magazine's 2025 list of the 100 Most Influential Companies.
Moniepoint was recognized for aiding Nigeria's informal businesses in accessing formal economic tools, enhancing financial inclusion.
Flutterwave's innovations facilitate cross-border digital payments and expand economic connectivity effectively in Africa.
TIME's prestigious annual list, now in its fifth year, recognizes 100 firms across the world that are making outstanding contributions to their sectors.
Moniepoint Inc
Nigeria's Moniepoint Inc. was listed in the Leaders category with Hyundai, GoFundMe, and LinkedIn. With 90% of Nigeria's 40 million small and medium-sized firms still functioning in the informal sector, Moniepoint has played an important role in assisting these businesses to shift to legal structures.
The company provides comprehensive banking solutions that enable informal enterprises to transition away from cash transactions, obtain loans, and grow sustainably.
'For us, 'financial inclusion' isn't just a buzzword, it's the difference between survival and growth,' says CEO and cofounder Tosin Eniolorunda
Moniepoint secured its reputation as one of Africa's most valuable fintechs in October 2024, receiving $110 million in equity funding and driving it into unicorn territory.
Flutterwave
Flutterwave, another Nigerian financial success story, was recognized in the Titans category with global behemoths like Meta, Amazon, and OpenAI.
The company has transformed digital payments in Africa, providing vital infrastructure for businesses to send and receive money easily across borders.
In 2024, the Nigerian firm, currently valued at $3 billion, extended its money transfer services to all U.S. states except Texas through its Send App, which, according to the business, completes almost all (98%) transactions in three minutes.
Digital payment solutions for businesses in Saudi Arabia and Turkey were also introduced by Flutterwave.
'I wish it was boring, we're here for the long game,' Agboola, the company's CEO, stated.
Tyme
Tyme, a company that operates in South Africa, joined the Pioneers category among innovators such as SpaceX and Equinor.
Tyme became one of Africa's newest unicorns in December 2024, when it raised $250 million in a Series D fundraising round.
Meeting underbanked people where they are has been the driving force behind Tyme Group's unique multi-country development trajectory.
The Singapore-based digital bank now serves around 17.5 million retail customers in South Africa and the Philippines.
'You can walk into a grocery store in South Africa and open a bank account with us in under three minutes,' says Chief Growth Officer Rachel Freeman.

Tinder rolls out mandatory face verification for California users
West Hollywood-based Tinder is now requiring facial recognition scans for all users in California as part of its efforts to build trust among users and reduce the prevalence of scams and fraud that plague dating apps. The feature, called Face Check, prompts users to take a short video selfie that is used to verify their identity. The verification data allows Tinder, owned by Match Group, to check whether a person's face matches their uploaded photos. The scan is also used to check other photos on the app to detect if a user is impersonating someone else or operating duplicate accounts. The technology is from a company called FaceTec. Users' verification data will be stored for the lifetime of their Tinder account and deleted within 30 days of account closure. "As part of our continued efforts, we are always testing ways to deliver the best experience for our users to seek authentic connections," a Tinder spokesperson said. While Tinder already offers photo and ID verification features, they are optional. Face Check will be mandatory in some places in hopes of stopping bad actors and bots who rarely opt into voluntary verification measures. The new function is "about confirming that this person is a real, live person and not a bot or a spoofed account," said Yoel Roth, Match Group's vice president of trust and safety. Tinder has been adding safety features to help users feel more comfortable on the app, including "Are You Sure?" and "Does This Bother You?" prompts that pop up to police potentially unwelcome interactions, as well as newer additions like Share My Date. The timing of this pilot program comes as romance scams become more prevalent across the United States. Romance scammers typically create fake profiles on dating platforms or contact victims through social media platforms. They build relationships over time through frequent communication before fabricating emergencies and requesting money from their targets. With over 60 million Americans using online dating services in 2023, the stakes are significant. The Federal Trade Commission reported that romance scams cost victims more than $1.1 billion, highlighting the scale of the problem. Congressional action is also underway to address these concerns. The House of Representatives unanimously passed the Romance Scam Prevention Act on June 23, which would require dating apps to notify users when they have interacted with someone removed from the platform for fraudulent activity. Face Check is already being used in Canada and Colombia. Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC. Portions copyrighted by the respective providers.

Rocket Companies completes purchase of Redfin
Rocket Companies announced Tuesday that it has closed on its previously announced $1.75 billion deal for real estate brokerage Redfin, a deal that combines Redfin's home search platform with Detroit-based Rocket's mortgage lending. "I've used Redfin every day for the last 20 years. It helped me find and fall in love with my first home, completely changing how I thought about real estate," Varun Krishna, CEO of Rocket Companies said in a statement Tuesday. "The Redfin team is best-in-class at building simple, intuitive experiences - perfectly aligned with Rocket's vision for the future of homeownership." Founded in 2004, Seattle-based Redfin features more than 1 million for-sale and rental listings, draws nearly 50 million monthly visitors and operates a brokerage with more than 2,200 real estate agents nationwide. Redfin's web site Tuesday showed a revamped brand identity with the tagline "Redfin Powered by Rocket." "The gulf between the American Dream of homeownership and the reality has never been wider," Glenn Kelman, CEO of Redfin said in a statement. "The reason Rocket and Redfin came together was to bridge that gap - so the people who spend their days dreaming on can more easily use Rocket to turn those dreams into reality." Earlier this year, Rocket announced that it would acquire Redfin in an all-stock deal - one of two acquisitions expected for Rocket this year. The second is mortgage servicer Mr. Cooper Group Inc., which is expected to be an all-stock deal worth $9.4 billion. The acquisition has long-term potential, though the timing may present some short-term challenges, said Tim Nash, vice president emeritus and director of the McNair Center at Northwood University. "Currently, home sales are in a slump - the worst period in at least seven years for new and used home sales," he said. "Interest rates are high, and the economy seems to be slowing." Nash said Rocket is making a strategic play by acquiring Redfin's online tools and brand, as opposed to paying the expense to expand internally. The result could be a better experience for Rocket and Redfin consumers. "They are going to benefit from a lot of the greater online capacity, greater web presence that they'll incorporate from Redfin into Rocket," he said. "So the average customer should get more information and be better, more quickly served with a lot more information." To mark the occasion, the companies introduced Rocket Preferred Pricing. Clients who finance their home through Rocket Mortgage and purchase a home listed by a Redfin agent or with the help of a Redfin agent will have a 1% interest rate reduction for the first year or receive a lender credit at closing, up to $6,000. Rocket and Redfin officials said they plan to launch additional products for homebuyers, real estate agents and mortgage brokers in the coming months. Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
