Competition Bureau advances investigation of Amazon's Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy Français
The Bureau is investigating the Amazon Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy. The policy allows Amazon to penalize sellers for certain conduct, including if they set a price for a product on Amazon.ca that is significantly higher than recent prices offered on Amazon or elsewhere. The Bureau is seeking to determine whether the purpose or effect of the policy is to:
allow Amazon to charge higher fees to sellers than it otherwise would, and whether this in turn causes sellers to charge higher retail prices to customers;
prevent the entry or expansion of existing or potential rivals by preventing sellers from offering lower prices elsewhere than they do on Amazon; or
lessen price competition among online marketplaces or retail channels.
The Bureau has obtained a court order from the Federal Court that requires Amazon to produce records and information relevant to the investigation.
There is no conclusion of wrongdoing at this time.

Training an advanced frontier large language model can consume as much electricity as 1,000 U.S. homes use in a year, depending on model size and run time. As Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), and Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOGL) race to build ever-larger AI systems, they're hitting a wall that has nothing to do with computing power -- it's the electrical grid. The math is brutal. Data centers already consume 2% of global electricity. With AI workloads growing exponentially, that could hit 8% by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency. Wind and solar can't scale fast enough. Natural gas would derail climate commitments. That leaves one option tech companies once shunned: nuclear fission. Until fusion becomes reality -- still decades away despite recent breakthroughs -- splitting atoms is the only proven technology that can deliver massive, reliable, carbon-free baseload power. The nuclear solution goes beyond retrofitting old plants According to recent government announcements and feasibility studies, Singapore is planning special economic zones where data centers will be powered by dedicated small modular reactors (SMRs). Poland is exploring similar "nuclear valleys" for AI infrastructure. Even California, which spent decades shuttering nuclear plants, is now extending the life of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant to meet surging demand. This isn't your grandparents' nuclear industry. Next-generation reactors are smaller, safer, and can be deployed faster than traditional plants. More importantly, tech companies are willing to pay premium prices for guaranteed clean power. Amazon recently acquired a 960-megawatt data center campus adjacent to a Pennsylvania nuclear plant through Talen Energy. Microsoft is hiring nuclear engineers and exploring SMR partnerships. The nuclear renaissance is here, and these three energy stocks offer the best ways to profit. 1. The disruptor Oklo (NYSE: OKLO) is developing fast-spectrum microreactors that aim to redefine how nuclear power is deployed. Founded by MIT-trained nuclear engineers, Oklo's Aurora reactor uses HALEU fuel (high-assay low-enriched uranium) and passive safety systems, meaning it can operate without active cooling or traditional water-based containment. The company went public via a special purpose acquisition company in 2024 and the stock has traded with high volatility, but the underlying technology is attracting serious attention. Early prototypes envisioned compact systems, but the current Aurora design targets up to 75 megawatts of electric output (MWe). This is enough to power tens of thousands of homes and can run for about 10 years without refueling. While not truly shipping-container-sized, the Aurora still represents a dramatic leap forward in reactor modularity and deployment speed. What makes Oklo unique is its business model. Rather than selling reactors, the company plans to sell power directly via long-term contracts. Think of it as nuclear-power-as-a-service. Oklo has signed letters of intent covering more than 2,100 megawatts with data center operators and industrial clients. The company is targeting first deployment by 2027, pending approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). While regulatory uncertainty remains a key risk, Oklo could bring its first commercial units online just as AI-driven energy demand enters a new phase of exponential growth. Oklo remains pre-revenue (not yet making sales), highly speculative, and contingent on both regulatory success and long-term fuel availability. But if successful, it could mark one of the most transformative nuclear breakthroughs of the modern era. 2. The supplier If nuclear power is experiencing a renaissance, you can't overlook Cameco Corporation (NYSE: CCJ), which is responsible for a significant share of global uranium supply through its high-grade Canadian operations and joint ventures. Since 2020, uranium spot prices have roughly tripled, rising from around $30 per pound to over $80, with a brief spike above $100 in early 2024. Yet even at today's elevated prices, global uranium production still only meets about 80% of reactor demand, according to the World Nuclear Association. The shortfall has been covered by strategic stockpiles, which are now being rapidly depleted. At the same time, more than 60 new nuclear reactors are under construction globally, with dozens more in the pipeline. Cameco is capitalizing on this tightening market. It recently signed long-term supply contracts with utilities at prices well above the spot market, signaling that institutional buyers are preparing for sustained scarcity. With production costs averaging around $30 per pound, the company enjoys operating margins above 20%, and those margins are likely to expand as higher-priced contracts come online. What's the bottom line? Cameco offers direct exposure to uranium's structural bull market, backed by premium contracts, low-cost production, and growing geopolitical importance. Still, investors should note that uranium remains a volatile commodity, influenced by regulatory policy, supply chain fragility, and geopolitical events. 3. The big dog Constellation Energy (NASDAQ: CEG) operates the largest nuclear fleet in the U.S., with 23 reactors generating roughly 10% of the country's carbon-free electricity. Since its 2022 spinoff from Exelon, its share price has increased nearly fivefold as investors increasingly prize dependable, emissions-free baseload power amid AI-driven demand growth. But the opportunity could be far from tapped. Hyperscalers are actively searching for secure, large-scale clean energy sources to power AI workloads, and Constellation is stepping into that role. The company is currently negotiating co-location and direct power agreements with data center operators, sidestepping the extended permitting and construction timelines of new-generation plants. With an existing nuclear fleet, robust transmission infrastructure, and regulatory approvals already secured, Constellation can deliver power years faster than greenfield contenders. That ability is priced into the stock: Constellation trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of approximately 34, a premium justified by its unique access to clean energy demand and the strategic value it offers. Constellation is cash-rich, infrastructure-ready, and well-positioned at the nexus of AI's power demands. While the valuation assumes successful deal execution, the company stands out among incumbents as uniquely capable of capitalizing early on the nuclear-based clean-energy transition. ‘Trying to make ends meet': Halifax store owner says construction is devastating business
A Halifax small business owner says he's trying to stay positive after construction on Dutch Village Road has slowed business to a crawl. Mohammad Ashiq, the co-owner of Hello Pets, says the year began well for business but things quickly deteriorated in the spring. 'We were expecting the construction would have an effect on our sales. But we weren't expecting the level of effect that it is having right now,' he said. Ashiq opened the pet store in the Fairview neighbourhood in 2022, along with his brother and their friend. He says during their short time in business, they've seen growth and a positive response from the community. 'We had a really good increase in our sales and like we're doing well. But since the construction started, it kind of really hit the pause in our momentum,' he said. He says the municipality gave him advanced notice about the construction work, which includes adding sidewalks and bike lanes to the street, but he wishes more had been done to mitigate the disruption to his business. Instead, it's full-on closures. 'We are just trying to kind of adapt to the situation as much as we can with the little resources that we have as a small business,' he said. Duncan Robertson, Nova Scotia's legislative affairs director with the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, says what's happening to Ashiq's business isn't unique. Robertson says 22 per cent of Atlantic Canadian businesses reported major disruptions due to construction. As a result, the CFIB is calling on the province and municipality to offer some form of compensation to local businesses. Among the jurisdictions that offer financial compensation are Montreal and Quebec City, which both have construction mitigation programs for small businesses. 'Now growth and construction is not a bad thing, but we really want governments to understand that this is having a real impact on our small businesses,' Robertson said. Spokesperson Jake Fulton acknowledges that construction is disruptive to business, saying in a statement that 'the municipality and the contractor will continue to provide businesses and residents with advance notice of any changes to traffic flow or access.' But Ashiq wants the municipality to offer something more. 'I feel like not just financial compensation, but there has to be some other creative ways to kind of support our small businesses,' he said. Building an abundant Canada beyond Bill 5
Canadians are living in a time of paradoxical scarcity. GDP has never been higher, but there are not enough houses for every family. Electronics have never been cheaper, but there are not enough doctors for every patient. The stock market shatters record after record, but there are not enough good-paying jobs for every worker. Canadian politics, in turn, has become a politics of scarcity. A politics is so consumed with the need to keep working people afloat, that we have abandoned visions of prosperity. A politics that looks to the past with nostalgia, instead of to the future with hope. To solve the paradox of scarcity, we need to imagine something better; something abundant. We need to dare to be hopeful. Imagine a Canada where your home is heated and cooled by energy so clean it doesn't emit an ounce of CO2, and so cheap, you barely pay attention to your utility bill. Where your fridge is stocked with fresh produce grown in a vertical greenhouse, just a few miles down the road. Where your daily commute and cross-country vacation travel is on fast, reliable, electric public transit. Where you get paid more to work less because of the wonders of artificial intelligence (A.I.) One hundred years ago, this was a utopia. Today, it's eminently possible. Solar panels are now cheaper than fossil fuels. The Netherlands — a country half the size of New Brunswick — is the second-largest exporter of vegetables in the world because of vertical farming. A.I. technology may be as revolutionary as electricity. If we can imagine an abundant Canada, we can build it. But to do that, we need to build more of what we need — public infrastructure, greenhouses, renewable energy and transmission lines. Not more of what corporate profits demand — pipelines, gold mines and ammonium nitrate plants. It also means that we need to use what non-renewable resources we have — critical minerals, aggregates, precious metals — to build what society needs and not what drives corporate returns. If we can imagine an abundant Canada, we can build it. But to do that, we need to build more of what we need — public infrastructure, greenhouses, renewable energy and transmission lines, writes Luke Hildebrand Unfortunately, we are barrelling headlong in the exact wrong direction. Ontario's Conservative government has enacted Bill 5 — Protect Ontario by Unleashing our Economy Act, 2025, and Canada's Liberal government enacted Bill C5 — The One Canadian Economy Act. Both pieces of legislation fast-track corporate mineral extraction and crude oil projects by gutting environmental protections and trampling labour rights. They give cabinet the power to waive any environmental or labour law, which slows down corporate extraction. The Liberal and Conservative Bill 5s amplify a politics of scarcity. They speak to the fact that we need more infrastructure projects and skilled jobs. But they set out to accomplish this by doing more of what caused this scarcity in the first place: re-allocating societal resources to projects which maximize corporate returns. Instead of advancing the long-term public good, they prioritize short-term private profit. These policies lead in only one direction: more corporate profit, more emissions and fewer sustainable jobs and resources to build a green economy. The Bill 5s effectively shunt the public service to the side, so supposedly uber-efficient companies can get things built. They manifest a worldview that the public service is devoid of the know-how to build projects, and only the private sector can save us. This is a fairytale. Corporations do what is profitable, not what is desirable. The same public services that organized the Canadian economy for two world wars, built the trans-Canada highway and developed the Canadarm which constructed the International Space Station, can coordinate and build the green economy we need. But to do it, we need to re-tool and re-empower the public service. For decades, the public service has been regulated to fail. Consecutive governments have piled more red tape, more regulations and more reporting requirements upon civil servants. Instead of a public service which innovates and builds, we now have a public service that fills out forms. Public servants — some of our best, brightest and most publicly-minded citizens — spend their time pushing paper instead of breaking ground. Canadians are hurting, but the Bill 5s are not the antidote. We need a politics of abundance. We have too little of what we need — good jobs, renewable energy, affordable housing — and too much of what we don't need which lines the pockets of corporations — cheap electronics, appliances designed to break and gas-guzzling cars. Politics is about priorities. We need to use the precious non-renewable resources we have for the projects of the highest societal importance, not the most profitable corporate schemes. But above all, we need to rediscover our belief in ourselves. To believe that we can accomplish more if we plan, build and design projects and the economy for the common good, than if we resign ourselves to what is profitable in the short-term. We need to believe in Canada, in Canadians, and build our common future together.
