Unlike pie-in-the-sky maglev fantasies, AmeriStarRail's plan leans on practicality. The company aims to use current Amtrak assets—coaches, sleepers, dining cars—and partner with host railroads like BNSF, Norfolk Southern and New Jersey Transit. Passengers wouldn't just get from coast to coast in comfort; they could also bring along their cars and even tractor-trailers.
The goal is to launch by May 2026, just in time for the FIFA World Cup and the country's 250th anniversary. That timeline is tight, especially considering the logistical tangles involved: track scheduling, rights-of-way, funding agreements and, not least, getting a green light from Amtrak. Amtrak hasn't responded to the proposal yet, and history suggests they might not bite. The company has previously passed on similar pitches from AmeriStarRail.
Still, AmeriStarRail is pushing forward. COO Scott Spencer is calling it the beginning of a "new Golden Age" in American rail, offering a scenic, lower-carbon alternative to air travel.
Can they pull it off? The biggest question mark remains Amtrak's cooperation. Without their participation, the plan is a no-go. But AmeriStarRail claims it has private capital lined up and has already briefed members of Congress.
Whether the Transcontinental Chief becomes reality or not, one thing's clear: there's growing momentum to rethink American rail. And with the spotlight soon to be on U.S. infrastructure during the World Cup and 250th anniversary, AmeriStarRail aims to make its mark.

Harris English is fighting to get his bagman into UK for The Open Harris English admits it's a work in progress as he attempts to get his full-time caddie Eric Larson into the UK for The Open. The American star's bagman is absent from the Genesis Scottish Open having been refused a visa to travel from the United States due to a past drug conviction. Associated Press reports Larson was unable to able to obtain a new Electronic Travel Authority visa for travel to the UK and has hired a legal firm to help. Grounds for refusal include an applicant who has been convicted of a criminal offence in the UK or overseas for which they served 12 months or more in prison. Three decades ago, Larson pleaded guilty to sending cocaine to friends and spent 10 years and three months in prison. Larson has worked at three Ryder Cup 's against Europe assisting Anthony Kim in 2008, Jeff Overton in 2010 and English four years ago at Whistling Straits. He has, in total, caddied for his current boss for the past eight years. English starts his Renaissance bid on Thursday and told AP: 'I guess the United Kingdom doesn't look highly on his past. And, apparently, it's a work in progress.' The player has contacted has contacted Warren Stephens, the United States ambassador to the UK, and he added: 'They wrote a letter. "The R&A wrote a letter. Olympic legend Lord Seb Coe to lead Man Utd plan for new 100,000-seater stadium
Manchester United unveiled images of their new stadium which will cost £2billion and see their iconic home, Old Trafford, knocked down as part of the development British Olympic legend Lord Sebastian Coe will lead Manchester United's plans for their new 100,000-seater stadium. Officials have targeted hosting the Women's World Cup final in 2035 - five years after they hope to have United themselves playing there. In March, the Red Devils unveiled images and scaled models of the new stadium which will cost an estimated £2billion and be built by Architecture firm Foster and Partners. Coe, 68, will be the face of the project. The Mail report that United have appointed the four-time Olympic medallist, who remains the only man to have won gold in the 1500m event twice. Club chiefs want the Red Devils to be in their new home for the start of the 2030-31 season, although there are multiple hurdles to get over first. United are said to be at loggerheads with a local business over a piece of land which is vital to the project, with new housing, an open cinema and much more part of their plans. The club's progress has been stunted by a failure to come to an agreement over the Freightliner Terminal which is behind the Stretford End. It's said that landowners Brookfield remain a substantial distance from United in terms of valuation. Coe will be publicly announced as 'Chair-Designate' of the Mayoral Development Corporation for the Old Trafford Regeneration project by Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester. Coe is also a close friend of Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who hopes that the new stadium will be his legacy as well as bringing sustained success back to United. "I'm delighted that I've been asked to be the chair designate of the proposed Old Trafford Mayoral Development Corporation," the 68-year-old commented. "Throughout my career, I've seen the difference that sports-led regeneration can make in fostering strong communities and acting as a catalyst for economic growth. "That was certainly true of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics - and now, I believe, Greater Manchester's moment has come. Working with Trafford Council and the Mayor, there's huge potential to bring new homes and jobs to the area around the Manchester United stadium. "And looking ahead, I see a chance to bring the FIFA Women's World Cup to a new Old Trafford Stadium in 2035. The home nations are the sole bidder, which presents a rare opportunity to bid to host the global football family." United chief executive Omar Berrada added: "This is an exciting decade for the region, and we warmly welcome the inclusion of the Old Trafford Regeneration project at the heart of the Greater Manchester Strategy. Sports executive charged with bid rigging in Texas arena project
Oak View Group CEO Tim Leiweke was indicted on a federal criminal conspiracy charge related to allegedly rigging a bid to develop, manage, and operate the University of Texas ' basketball and entertainment arena in Austin, the Department of Justice said Wednesday. Oak View Group, which will pay $15 million in penalties in connection with the allegations, later Wednesday said that Leiweke 'will transition from the position of CEO to' vice chairman of the entertainment venue giant's board of directors, and remain a shareholder. Leiweke, 68, is accused in the indictment of conspiring with another would-be bidder on UT's $338 million Moody Center arena project to induce that second company in February 2018 to drop out of the competition with Oak View Group in exchange for receiving lucrative subcontracts at the 15,000-seat arena. CNBC has been told the second company was Legends Hospitality, a New York-based venue services company that is majority-owned by Sixth Street Partners, and whose minority owners include the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys. The indictment in U.S. District Court in Austin says that Leiweke later reneged on that promise to the second company after it dropped its effort to bid on the entire project. 'The arena opened to the public in April 2022, and OVG continues to receive significant revenues from the project to date,' the Department of Justice said Wednesday. Leiweke 'rigged a bidding process to benefit his own company and deprived a public university and taxpayers of the benefits of competitive bidding,' said Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater of the DOJ's Antitrust Division, in a statement. Leweike, in a 2022 interview with CNBC, said that the Moody Center was one of his company's 'two most successful arenas.' The DOJ also said Wednesday that Oak View Group and Legends agreed to pay $15 million and $1.5 million, respectively, in penalties 'in connection with the conduct alleged in the indictment against Leiweke.' Oak View Group's website says that the company manages 400 sports, entertainment and other venues. Lewieke, who is charged with one count of conspiracy to restrain trade, is the former CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. Before that, he served as CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group. A spokesman for Leiweke, in a statement to CNBC, said, 'Mr. Leiweke has done nothing wrong and will vigorously defend himself and his well-deserved reputation for fairness and integrity.' 'The Antitrust Division's allegations are wrong on the law and the facts, and the case should never have been brought,' the spokesman said. 'The law is clear: vertical, complementary business partnerships, like the one contemplated between OVG and Legends, are legal.' 'These allegations blatantly ignore established legal precedent and seek to criminalize common teaming efforts that are proven to enhance competition and benefit the public. The Moody Center is a perfect example, as it has resulted in substantial and sustained benefits to the University of Texas and the City of Austin.' Leiweke, in his own statement, said, 'While I'm pleased the company has resolved its Department of Justice Antitrust Division inquiry without any charges filed or admission of wrongdoing, the last thing I want to do is distract from the accomplishments of the team or draw focus away from executing for our partners, so the Board and I decided that now is the right time to implement the succession plan that was already underway and transition out of the CEO role. Oak View Group, in a statement, said, 'Oak View Group cooperated fully with the Antitrust Division's inquiry and is pleased to have resolved this matter with no charges filed against OVG and no admission of fault or wrongdoing.' 'We support all efforts to ensure a fair and competitive environment in our industry and are committed to upholding industry-leading compliance and disclosure practices,' Oak View Group said. CNBC has requested comment from Legends. Chris Granger, who was president of Oak View Group's division OVG360, has been appointed as interim CEO of Oak View Group by the company's board. Granger previously was group president for sports and entertainment of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings, and president and chief operating officer of the Sacramento Kings.
