Tyrone deserving favourites to extend underage dominance

All-Ireland MFC Final: Kerry v Tyrone, St Conleth's Park, Newbridge, Sunday, 1.30pm – Live TG4
The power of
Tyrone's
underage conveyor belt continues to impress. This year, they won a third under-20 All-Ireland in four seasons to go with Omagh CBS's two Hogan Cups in the past three years. Now, the minors are in the Electric Minor Ireland All-Ireland, looking for a first win in 15 years.
Kerry
are the first non-Ulster side to make the final in three years and are after a first title since the five-in-a-row sequence concluded seven years ago. They won a classic semi-final against Mayo, surviving a late comeback with a huge contribution from Ben Kelliher of 0-9, seven from play.
Like Kerry, Tyrone are unbeaten so far, but have a personnel problem with the gifted Joel Kerr having signed for English soccer club West Ham, effective from July 1st. Frantic negotiations have been ongoing against a pessimistic backdrop.
The Ulster champions have, however, had prolific inputs from Peter Colton and Eoin Long and have enjoyed the benefits of training with the under-20s and seniors in Garvaghy.

They deserve to be favourites even on a form line through Cavan who they beat more comfortably in the provincial final than Kerry managed later in the All-Ireland series.
Verdict:

Lyng bemoans four goal concession: ‘You are always going to be under pressure'

Kilkenny manager Derek Lyng had no issue with the scoreboard during the closing stages of their All-Ireland semi-final defeat against Tipperary. There was confusion around Croke Park after the final whistle. The validity of a Noel McGrath effort result in questions over the official 4-21 to 0-30 final score. However, speaking in his post-match press conference, Lyng said he understood the scoreboard was accurate in the stadium. 'No. I had three,' he said. The old adage that goals win games proved true in both of the weekend's contests. Tipperary's fourth goal came after Darragh McCarthy's red card and proved to be the decisive blow. 'I think when you concede three before half-time, you're always going to be under pressure. We started the game very well. We were managing the game pretty well to that point and maybe a sense of panic when the first goal went in. I'm not sure. 'But credit to our players, I thought they responded really well, particularly in the second half. It looked like we got control of the game again. 'But conceding the fourth goal, you're going to have to do an awful lot to win a semi-final when you concede four. If I was asked before the game if we hit 30 points, we would have said we wouldn't have been too far off it. Unfortunately, just a few too many let in at the other side.' Kilkenny deployed their extra man close to goal but Oisín O'Donoghue was still able to capitalise on some sloppiness in front of Hill 16 with one minute of normal time remaining. At the time, the sides were level. O'Donoghue had advantage as he headed towards Eoin Murphy's square. He wanted more. The finish into the top corner was terrific. 'I would have been really disappointed with the goal,' said Lyng. 'I think we had the ball, we lost the ball, had it again maybe, I don't know. 'I think James (Owens) had given a free at that stage, the hand was up and I was waiting for it to be pulled back and next thing it is a goal. Sometimes when you go down a man, the effort just ups and you chase everything down. 'Look, we didn't use it well enough. Simple as that. We weren't urgent enough then to use the spare man better.'

Meath set up semi-final with Kerry by trouncing Tipperary

All-Ireland ladies SFC quarter-final: Meath 2-17 Tipperary 1-6 Meath will face defending champions Kerry at the semi-final stage of the TG4 All-Ireland senior football championship after goals from Vikki Wall and Niamh Gallogly helped the Leinster side towards an emphatic triumph over Tipperary at Pairc Tailteann in Navan on Sunday. While Tipperary opened the scoring in this contest with an Anna Rose Kennedy point just 20 seconds into the play, Meath subsequently squeezed in front thanks to unanswered efforts from Gallogly and midfielder Marion Farrelly. The Royal County subsequently bolstered their prospects on six minutes when Wall rifled an unstoppable strike from a left-hand angle into the far corner of the Tipperary net. Despite their Munster counterparts initially responding with an Aishling Moloney free, a wind-assisted Meath proceeded to dominate the remainder of the opening period. After Farrelly and Emma Duggan split the posts to move the home team five points clear (1-4 to 0-2) on the first-quarter mark, Gallogly profited from excellent build-up play by Megan Thynne and Ciara Smyth before palming home for a 17th minute goal. Farrelly swung over another brace of points off her trusty left boot as the action progressed and with Wall, Kerrie Cole and captain Aoibhin Cleary also finding the range, the Royals brought a commanding 2-9 to 0-2 cushion into the break. Meath stretched their advantage on the resumption with a successful Duggan free and even though substitute Neassa Towey and Kennedy kicked fine points for Tipperary at the opposite end, Ciara Smyth and Cole also raised white flags to leave Shane McCormack's hosts very much in control of his own destiny. Skryne attacker Smyth and the always dependable Wall then contributed additional points to ensure the Royals were 16 to the good (2-14 to 0-4) heading into the final-quarter. The strength in depth of the Meath panel was emphasised by the introduction of former team skippers Monica McGuirk and Shauna Ennis as substitutes during this juncture – the latter getting her name on the scoresheet with a 46th minute point. A spirited Tipperary supplemented white flag scores courtesy of Towey and Aoibhe O'Shea with a fisted goal from Moloney in the closing stages, but with Smyth and Gallogly added to their personal hauls, Meath convincingly returned to the penultimate phase of the Brendan Martin Cup for the first time since 2022.
