Disappointed when Adani airport deal cancelled, they're credible partner: Kenya's Odinga

Hans India20-06-2025

Nairobi: Kenya's former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Friday said he was disappointed when the Adani Group deal to expand and manage Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) got cancelled.
On the second day of the National Executive Retreat in Karen here, Odinga said that should the deal have proceeded, it would have elevated Nairobi into a regional economic hub, as per local media.
"I was very disappointed when we were not able to move on with the airport contract that was very unfortunate,' the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader was quoted as saying in the Nairobi Leo publication.
Citing political manoeuvring as the key reason for the deal's collapse, he said: "Kenya is very strategically located. I was very disappointed when we were not able to move on with the airport contract... If that is not done, Nairobi will become dormant."
Before the cancellation of the deal, Odinga was among the leaders who defended the Adani Group.
Kenyan President William Ruto ordered the cancellation of the Adani-JKIA expansion deal as well as the Adani-Ketraco deal, while issuing the State of the Nation Address in Parliament on November 21, 2024.
Odinga said that the country lost a strategic opportunity after the deal fell through, adding that Adani's capabilities surpass those of other firms in East Africa.
"Adani is a credible partner. They have proven their capabilities in projects that surpass what we have seen in East Africa," he said.
The Adani Group has been interested in investing in Kenya since 2010, but this interest was hindered by the lack of a proper legal framework for public-private partnerships (PPPs) at the time.
"I want to say that there needs to be transparency when dealing with such issues; otherwise, we risk condemning very reputable companies… Do not condemn innocent companies that are engaged in legitimate commercial transactions," the Kenyan leader was quoted as saying.

Amid buzz over a possible leadership change in Karnataka, Congress General Secretary Randeep Surjewala said there is no such exercise comes amid statements from several Congress leaders and open calls from DK Shivakumar's supporters demanding that he be made Chief Minister. Most of the MLAs want effective administration,' Hussain said. He argued that DK Shivakumar deserves the opportunity, citing his efforts in strengthening the party and leading multiple agitations. Surjewala put these speculations to rest, stating that if any MLA has concerns, real or perceived, they should be addressed within the party and the added that both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar have confirmed that the state has more than enough funds for a swipe at the BJP, Surjewala said the opposition party is pushing this narrative because it wants the Congress government's guarantees to collapse. 'From R Ashok to Vijayendra, all of them have said they want our guarantees to be stopped,' he said, challenging the BJP to openly admit that it does not want people to a comparison, he said, 'There's BJP's Adani model of governance and our welfare-based model of governance.' Delhi developer Anant Raj to invest $2 billion on India data center boom

Anant Raj's move follows ambitious plans by India's top business houses Adani Group and Reliance Industries Ltd. to expand their footprint Bloomberg Anant Raj Ltd. plans to spend ₹18,000 crore ($2.1 billion) on data centers as it joins a growing list of Indian companies looking to ride the boom in demand for artificial intelligence and business process-led services in the country. The Delhi-based developer with a market value of $2.3 billion will launch two more data centers or server farms in the northern Indian state of Haryana. This is in addition to the one already operational, as it aims for a capacity of little over 300 megawatts by 2032, Amit Sarin, managing director at Anant Raj said. 'India is witnessing one of the fastest growth phases globally for data centers,' said Sarin in an interview, adding that the project will be funded through the company's own funds. Anant Raj's move follows ambitious plans by India's top business houses Adani Group and Reliance Industries Ltd. to expand their footprint. The trend is underscored by Barclays Plc's view that the South Asian nation will be a big beneficiary of the data center investment boom in Asia, driven by digitalization and rules requiring data to be stored within the country. Smaller firms are not far behind. Bengaluru-based RMZ Corp. is spending $1.7 billion on two data centers and Panchshil Realty is considering partnering with Blackstone Inc. to build a large data center in Mumbai. Data centers are expected to make up more than 40 per cent of Anant Raj's revenues in the next four years from 5 per cent at present, Sarin said. The company tied up with the French IT company Orange Business to provide cloud services to its clients along with data centers last year. 'India currently generates 28 per cent of the world's data but houses only 1 per cent of it locally, presenting a significant opportunity for expansion as data localization becomes inevitable,' Sarin said.

This multibagger Adani Group stock hits record high on new order win worth ₹580 crore

Shares of multibagger ITD Cementation India Ltd surged nearly 6 percent on Monday, June 30, hitting a record high of ₹ 941.75 after the company announced a significant international contract win. The Adani Group-backed construction firm secured a marine infrastructure project worth $67.4 million (approximately ₹ 580 crore) for jetty construction works in Abu Dhabi, boosting investor sentiment. The stock's remarkable rally reflects growing investor confidence in the company's expanding order book and operational strength. ITD Cementation India revealed on Friday, June 27, that it has been awarded a high-value international marine contract for the Ruwais LNG project in Abu Dhabi. The $67.4 million project involves jetty construction and is a part of the company's routine business operations. While this marks a major international win, the company has also been steadily building its domestic order book. Just last week, ITD Cementation bagged two major domestic projects worth a combined ₹ 960 crore, excluding GST. One of the contracts pertains to construction activities at Trivandrum International Airport in Kerala. The other project is the construction of a multi-storeyed commercial building in Kolkata, West Bengal. Though the company did not disclose client names or execution timelines, the announcements highlight its growing presence in both domestic and international markets. The back-to-back order wins reinforce the company's strong positioning in the infrastructure and construction segment, supported by a well-diversified portfolio that spans airports, marine works, buildings, and metros. For the quarter ended March 31, ITD Cementation India reported a 27 percent year-on-year rise in consolidated net profit to ₹ 113.6 crore. Revenue grew by nearly 10 percent YoY to ₹ 2,478.7 crore, driven by healthy execution across key projects. Operating profit increased 18 percent to ₹ 259.6 crore, while operating margins improved to 10.5 percent from 9.8 percent in the same quarter last year. The board also recommended a dividend of ₹ 2 per equity share for FY25, maintaining its commitment to shareholder returns. From a market standpoint, the company has been a remarkable performer. With today's surge, the stock has rallied over 111 percent from its 52-week low of ₹ 445.60, recorded in July 2024. Over the past year, the stock has gained nearly 69 percent. It rose more than 29 percent in June alone, following a 46.6 percent surge in May. Although it saw a 12.5 percent dip in April, the broader trajectory remains bullish. Over a five-year period, the stock has delivered multibagger returns of 1,505 percent to shareholders.
