Broward State Attorney seeking death penalty for Tamarac triple murder suspect

Miami Herald14-03-2025
Broward prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Nathan Gingles, the U.S. Army veteran and defense contractor who, deputies say, shot and killed his wife, her father and a neighbor in a quiet Tamarac neighborhood last month.
The four-page document announcing the intent of seeking death was filed Thursday by Assistant State Attorney Kristine Bradley and details multiple legal reasons why the crime qualifies for capital punishment, including that 'it was committed in a cold, calculated, premeditated manner without any pretense or moral or legal justification.'
Nathan Gingles, 43, is accused of using a silencer-equipped handgun to first kill his father-in-law, 64-year-old David Ponzer, as he was drinking his morning coffee in his daughter's back patio on Feb. 16. He then chased down his wife, Mary Gingles, 34, as she ran away and into neighbor Andrew Ferrin's unlocked house across the street.
There, he gunned down both Mary and Ferrin. Broward Sheriff's Office deputies found Ferrin, 36, dead in his bed lying underneath a blanket. Mary's body was found lying under a window in Ferrin's bedroom, investigators say.
The Gingles' 4-year-old daughter Seraphine followed her father into Ferrin's home and witnessed her mother's murder, detectives say. An Amber Alert was launched in the immediate aftermath of the rampage, and deputies found Nathan and Seraphine at a North Lauderdale Walmart that afternoon.
Gingles has pleaded not guilty to three counts of premeditated murder, kidnapping, child abuse, violation of domestic violence injunctions and interference with custody.
The murders followed a year of a contentious divorce process and Nathan violating restraining orders by breaking into the Plum Bay house in Tamarac the couple once shared and was ordered by a judge to stay out of.
In the wake of the slayings, Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony suspended eight deputies for the way they handled Mary's multiple domestic violence calls against her estranged husband, including failing to seize his multiple weapons, including silencers, following a December restraining order.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.

Five of the 11 people injured in a stabbing attack at a Traverse City, Michigan, Walmart on July 26 have been treated and released from the hospital, health system officials said Friday. In addition to the five released, four patients are in good condition, and two others have been treated and transferred, according to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, which has been providing medical care. The victims range in age from 29 to 84 years old. "We continue to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the incredible physicians, nurses, surgeons, clinical professionals, and support staff across Munson Healthcare. Their unwavering commitment to care and recovery during this difficult time reflects the strength of our healthcare community," the hospital system said in a statement Friday. "Our thoughts are with all those affected and their loved ones. We stand beside them and remain focused on supporting the health and well-being of everyone in our region." Bradford James Gille, 42, of Afton, Michigan, is accused of using a folding knife with a 3.5-inch blade to attack five men and six women, including one store employee, during the late afternoon hours of July 26. Gille is charged with terrorism and 11 counts of assault with intent to murder. He was arraigned on July 28 in the 86th District Court and pleaded not guilty. Gille has a history of mental illness and a criminal record that includes assault and malicious destruction of property, according to Grand Traverse County Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg. Authorities are still working to determine a motive behind the attack. The store, where the attack occurred in northwest Michigan, reopened Wednesday morning.

Third man charged in teen's ‘17 drug robbery death

As Anthony Triplett was set to get out of prison for killing a 14-year-old boy, charges were unsealed July 21 for a different criminal case for Diego Serna's Nov. 2, 2017 death in Gary's Miller section. Triplett, 27, of Gary, is the third man charged in Serna's killing. The case has been delayed for years. He has pleaded not guilty. His next hearing is Sept. 11. Against his better instincts, a 20-year-old man went to a Gary apartment complex on Nov. 2, 2017, to sell 1.5 ounces of marijuana to Augustus 'Gus' Johnson, his then-Hammond Walmart co-worker, charges allege. It was a setup. The man ended up seriously wounded and his friend, Serna, 16, of Hammond, was killed. Gary Police responded to the Marquette Apartments, 405 South Huntington St. They found Serna, who appeared lifeless, on his stomach. The marijuana dealer survived. Johnson, now 48, is awaiting sentencing after signing a plea deal in 2021. At various points, prosecutors filed to squash the deal, then go forward with it. He told police that he, another Walmart co-worker, Triplett, talked about robbing the dealer months earlier. That evening, they picked up co-defendant Marcell Ellison in East Chicago. At the Gary apartments, as the marijuana dealer approached Johnson's car, Triplett came up behind him and fired four shots, charges state. Ellison also fired shots toward the man. Johnson told police he was the getaway driver. Ellison's trial is set in November. The case was further complicated after the original detective got indicted in a federal child porn case. It has since been reassigned to a different investigator. Former Gary Police Det. James Bond, 52, of Crown Point, a former deputy chief, commander and homicide supervisor, was indicted in September 2024 after soliciting an explicit video from a 17-year-old boy working as a city intern in the police department last summer. Investigators found a latent cached screenshot on his iPhone. Triplett was sentenced in December 2021 for killing 14-year-old Arion Lilly, who was shot in the back after leaving a barber shop, lawyers said. Triplett said he was fleeing another car shooting at him and didn't mean to hit the boy.

Car was found in an Everglades canal. Hours later, Broward cops found dead body

A man's body surfaced in a west Broward canal in the Florida Everglades early Thursday morning, prompting a swift response from rescue divers and drones. Deputies responded to reports of a submerged vehicle near Krome Avenue and U.S. Highway 27 around 9 p.m. on Wednesday and found a Chevy Tahoe underwater, Broward Sheriff's Office told the Miami Herald. The agency's dive team, missing persons unit, marine patrol and drone unit were deployed to locate the SUV when, hours later, the dead body turned up. Marshall Jones, owner of Mack's Fish Camp, an air boat tour business located on the same stretch of canal, was the first to phone authorities and guided rescue crews when they arrived. 'I saw fresh skid marks and disturbance on the side of the levy and bubbles in the canal,' Marshall Jones told the Miami Herald. Jones described the body as a man in his 30s. He told the Miami Herald he thinks the body was the driver and that he had been ejected from the SUV before he was found. BSO's Traffic Homicide Unit is now investigating how the sunken car and its driver ended up in the canal. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
