RCMP investigate two-vehicle collision in St. John's that killed 40-year-old man
ST. JOHN'S — Police in Newfoundland and Labrador say they are investigating a collision in St. John's that left a 40-year-old man dead.
They say officers responded to reports of a 'serious' collision on Pitts Memorial Drive, just East of Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive, around 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday.
They say officers determined that the collision happened between a Dodge Charger and a Suzuki motorcycle.
Police say the motorcycle driver sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
They say he was pronounced dead a short time later.
RCMP is asking anyone with any information or dashcam footage to come forward.

Police search for suspect after Richmond Hill cellphone store allegedly robbed at knifepoint
Social Sharing Police in York Region are searching for a suspect after three people allegedly robbed a cellphone store in Richmond Hill on Tuesday. York Regional Police were called to Hillcrest Mall just before 6 p.m., Const. Kevin Nebrija told CBC News. He said the suspects were armed with at least one knife and forced an employee at the Freedom Mobile store to open a safe. Several cellphones were stolen before the suspects fled the scene in a grey sedan, Nebrija added. Police say they tracked the suspects to Toronto, where two were arrested. Nebrija said one of the males arrested is from Toronto, while the other is from Brampton. Police say no injuries were reported. "In these cases, they're using weapons to force the employees to hand over the merchandise. And so, as with any robbery, we tell our victims the best thing to do is to comply. You never know what sort of mentality these suspects have," Nebrija said. Freedom Mobile's public affairs team confirmed to CBC News in an email that one of their Greater Toronto Area stores was targeted. "Right now, our priority is to provide support to our employees," the email read. The company added additional safety measures have been implemented in stores and that it is working with police to monitor the situation. Nebrija said after the suspects fled, York police contacted Toronto police, who assisted with the arrest. According to Toronto police statistics, there were two smash and grab robberies in the city by this time last year. This year, the number is already sitting at 34, 14 of which were at cellphone stores. York police were unable to say if there has been a rise in cellphone store robberies this year. "There have been a few over the past few months and again, a lot of them do share similar traits in terms of the suspects entering either brandishing a weapon or alleging they have a weapon and enforcing the employees to hand over merchandise," Nebrija said. Royal Canoe bass player, partner killed in crash
A Winnipeg musician and his partner were killed after a two-vehicle collision on Highway 10 on Canada Day. Brendan Berg, bass player for indie pop band Royal Canoe, and his partner, Olivia Michalczuk, died in the head-on crash about three kilometres north of Bowsman. Swan River RCMP were called to Highway 10 at about 3:30 p.m., where they found two vehicles in the east ditch. The driver of the southbound vehicle, a 36-year-old man from Winnipeg, and his passenger, a 29-year-old Swan River man, were taken to hospital with critical injuries. 'We are all in a state of shock trying to process this tragic news,' Royal Canoe posted on social media. 'Brendan was the kindest, sweetest man you could ever know, and his passing has left an enormous and sudden hole in the lives of everyone who knew him.' Local RCMP, as well as criminal collision investigators, are still looking into the crash. As of Wednesday, 32 people have been killed in collisions on highways and roads in RCMP jurisdiction this year, Mountie spokeswoman Michelle Lissel said. That's up from 23 fatalities in the same time frame last year, but close to the five-year average of 30 deaths.

Man arrested in shopping mall with gun, knife and cocaine

Police said on June 30 around 7:15 p.m., officers from the East District responded to a report of a man seen with a firearm at the shopping centre. Police would not confirm the name of the shopping mall. A mall employee originally saw the man placing a gun into his satchel and mall security was alerted. Police said the mall security kept a safe eye on the suspect until they arrived. No threats were made and nobody was injured, according to police. A 35-year-old man was arrested and charged with multiple offences, including possessing a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. He was also charged for possession of cocaine, which police said amounted to 2.59 grams.
