Meta shuts down accounts posting sexual content of SA school children
Anonymous Instagram accounts and WhatsApp Channels distributing explicit child pornography involving South African school children have been shut down
This is according to Meta, which was given until 12pm on Tuesday to shut down all the accounts and channels linked to the distribution of sexual content involving school children and to 'permanently disable the creator of the WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles listed' from creating any further WhatsApp channels and Instagram profiles.
Judgment
Gauteng High Court Judge Mudunwazi Makamu handed down the judgment in an order sought by Digital Law Company, directed by social media law expert Emma Sadlier, in Johannesburg on Monday.
In the urgent ruling, Makamu agreed with the arguments by advocate Ben Winks that children have been victimised by the publication of lurid and sexually explosive material that was published on Instagram accounts and WhatsApp channels.
Sadlier welcomed the ruling.

Meta responds
In response to The Citizen, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company has taken action as ordered.
'We have zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation and are committed to ensuring the safety of all users on our platforms.
'We can confirm that the accounts we have been able to identify have been shut down, and we have submitted reports to the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children in line with applicable laws. We will continue to engage with law enforcement and respond to valid legal requests,' the Meta spokesperson said.
Explicit content
According to Sadlier, the content on the channels included several explicit images and videos, including that of a Grade 11 pupil from a school south of Johannesburg having sex with a girl in a room, while another video shows a Grade 12 boy having sex with a Grade 9 girl in a school bathroom, apparently filmed by another pupil.
'From time to time, it appears that Meta administrators will delete or block some of the pages and channels (presumably in response to user complaints). However, not long after, the same page or channel will be active again, or another channel will crop up replicating the previous channel – and the distribution of illegal content continues unabated,' Sadlier said.
Sadlier warned parents to check their children's phones.
'I just want to alert parents to one of the biggest issues, and that is that these kids are all joining WhatsApp channels… The kind of content being circulated on these channels is horrific, child sexual abuse images, child pornography'.

SPCA to investigate Tshwane man who threatened to beat dog
The Tshwane division of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is investigating a viral clip of a man threatening to beat his dog. In a clip posted on X, user @pookiepolls posted a clip filmed by a Johannesburg man who had raised concerns about his neighbour, who had threatened to beat his dog. The neighbour launched a profanity-filled rant in response. He said, 'How is it any of your business? It's not your dog….When you hear my dog screaming next time, you shut your mouth! I'm going to go there and beat it again, because it's my business, it's my dog.' The clip has been widely shared on the X platform, and many South Africans have raised concerns about the animal's welfare. The NSPCA responded to several X posts stating that the Tshwane branch would investigate the man. The SPCA has repeatedly warned the public that animal abusers can be criminally charged under the Animals Protection Act (APA) 71 of 1962. The act – which was established to prevent the cruelty of animals – stipulates that those found guilty can face a fine or imprisonment. Offenders can also face a denial of ownership – preventing them from owning animals – as well as a criminal conviction. According to the SPCA, the APA makes provisions for individuals who also infuriate or terrify animals. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 . Son watches in horror on CCTV as father is killed in Buffelsdrift home attack
Son watches in horror on CCTV as father is killed in Buffelsdrift home attack A late-night robbery on a Buffelsdrift plot turned deadly when a man was brutally assaulted and killed — his son, watching remotely via CCTV, witnessed the horrifying scene unfold in real time. According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, the attack happened at around 20:10 on a plot in the Buffelsdrift Kameeldrift area. 'The son of the plot owner saw on his CCTV camera that an unknown African male was walking in his father's yard.' It is believed the son rushed to the scene. He arrived at the scene and saw four African men in the yard. Three ran into the house, and the other one ran around the house. All four men fled the scene. The son searched the house and found it ransacked. He then found his father at the side of the house. The father was badly assaulted in the face and tied with wires. The man was rushed to the Montana hospital and declared dead on arrival. Van Dyk said only a cellphone and cash were robbed. He said all four attackers were dressed in blue overalls. Van Dyk furthermore added that police have launched a manhunt for the attackers. 'Murder and house robbery are being investigated, and the investigation is underway.' According to Van Dyk, forensic experts are currently on the scene collecting evidence. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
