Girls and Boys review – a devastating portrait of motherhood, marriage and violence
We listen as she builds a dream career as a documentary film-maker, her confidence inspired by her new husband. But even as we're falling for her candour and chutzpah, Kelly is casting shadows that haunt and lengthen. The trace elements of the writer's dark vein – as seen in his brilliantly disturbing TV series Utopia – are present even in his character's most triumphant moments.
Between sections of the monologue, Loftus acts out scenes of motherhood in designer Janet Bird's peachy open kitchen; an ominous crackle accompanies the transitions between the two. We can't see the children, but an aching combination of tenderness and frustration renders them perfectly – too-clever Leanne, fashioning London's Shard skyscraper out of mud, and boisterous Danny determined to cluster-bomb it. Their father's absence is increasingly noticeable.
Anna Ledwich's direction doesn't overdo the unease; it's always there, waiting, in the corner of your eye. Seven years ago, Carey Mulligan debuted this role and Loftus's performance surely deserves just as much attention. She is so winning and relatable that it's only later you clutch at your stomach and notice you have been silently, surgically eviscerated.
'I think a lot about violence,' she says at one point. 'It's such a fundamental part of our species. How can you understand us if you don't understand it?' The answers this play offers are not meant to be definitive (when it was first produced at the Royal Court, some found its discussion of gender-based aggression too one-sided). But as an evocation of the human heart's insidious capacities, it is devastating.

I know why desperate Meghan and Harry REALLY held peace talks – they'll be begging for handouts now, expert claims
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A ROYAL expert has claimed the real reason why Meghan and Harry held peace talks, saying the Duke and Duchess will now be begging for handouts. Journalist and author Robert Jobson made the revealing comments whilst appearing on The Sun's latest Royal Exclusive show. Mr Jobson, talking to The Sun's Matt Wilkinson said: 'Well, the deal was always set about $100 million, wasn't it? 'And the talk of that figure sort of blew a lot of people's minds, but I think that was for productions and things that they're supposed to have done. 'Where does it leave them? Probably with a bit of a bowl out, looking for some handouts.' He added: 'Maybe that's why they were over with their staff, were over here having discussions with the King. I don't know. 'The reality is in the past they got support from the King and the late Queen, and they said they were going to go and make their way. 'They've lost Spotify, they've lost Netflix. 'They can't rely on the spare money forever, can they?' The show's other guest, Sky News' royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills also speculated what the Duke and Duchess of Sussex would now do for money. She said: 'It's just fascinating. They have this very expensive lifestyle. Meghan and Harry must need more money - their staff induction bill alone will be HUGE 'They have to pay for their security, pay for that big mansion. 'How do you kind of keep the money coming in?' Earlier this month it was revealed Netflix will not renew their contract when it expires in September. The Sussexes and Netflix have mutually decided not to make an official announcement. But streaming execs have quietly agreed to part ways. It comes after Harry's vanity project, Polo, about the sport, was watched by just 500,000 people. It was also understood that bosses were mildly infuriated by Meghan making her As Ever brand a priority. A source said streamer Paramount+ was thought to be keen to work with the couple, who would be open to it if the right project came along. Last month it was announced Netflix had signed a deal with King Charles and Idris Elba for a documentary exploring the impact of the King's Trust. And it was understood any deal with the Sussexes could be seen as a hindrance to that link-up. Netflix declined to comment. Harry is said to have 'given his blessing' for the peace talks involving two of his team plus the King and Queen's director of communications. They spoke about potential ways to end their family conflict, though a proposal for Harry to make a royal return was not on the agenda. Adding intrigue to the developments, Prince William's team were not involved in the London summit. California-based Harry is next due to visit the UK in September for the annual WellChild events. It opens up the prospect of meeting his father for the first time in 18 months. Buckingham Palace had also supported the proposals to 'open a channel of communication' — it has been claimed. 5 The loss of the Netflix deal comes after the couple lost their deal with Spotify Credit: AP

Prince Harry dealt 'financial blow' after major update to his and Meghan's Netflix deal
Reports have suggested Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix deal is not going to be renewed - and a source has revealed why Harry will be impacted most Prince Harry will have been dealt a significant blow after Netflix reportedly decided not to renew his and Meghan Markle's multi-million-dollar deal, according to sources. The Sussexes are believed to have signed a five-year deal worth around $100million in September 2000 with the streaming giant to produce a raft of content. However, apart from their first offering - their controversial docuseries Harry & Meghan - their following shows on the streaming platform have not matched its success. In fact, last week, it emerged that Meghan's lifestyle and cookery show, With Love, Meghan, failed to make it into Netflix's top 300 most-watched shows for 2025. Now sources have said the deal with Netflix will not be renewed when it expires, with one insider telling PEOPLE magazine it reflects a broader shift in the streamer's business strategy. Meanwhile, another source told The Sun that the deal had "run its course" and that Netflix felt they had got "all they could" from the couple. And they added it could prove a huge financial hit for the couple, especially Harry. The source said: "Netflix execs are well aware Meghan's priority now is her own brand, and they won't play second fiddle to that. "Publicly, there will not be a statement, and of course, if things change dramatically, they'd be open to a one-off project down the line. But for Harry, especially, this will be a blow. It's a huge loss of revenue." The Mirror has contacted Netflix and the office of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex for comment. When they first signed the deal with Netflix, the couple said: "Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us." Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer and co-chief executive, also said at the time: "We're incredibly proud they have chosen Netflix as their creative home and are excited about telling stories with them that can help build resilience and increase understanding for audiences everywhere." But speaking in their bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, Harry memorably said he and Meghan signed lucrative deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify after being financially cut off from the royals - leaving them with hefty security bills. Harry said deals with the streaming giants were "never part of the plan", but said they needed cash to pay for security. He said: "That was suggested by somebody else by the point of where my family literally cut me off financially, and I had to afford security for us." The couple's deal with Spotify was said to be worth $25million but came to an end after just several episodes of a joint podcast and one series of Meghan's podcast, Archetypes. The 12-episode series saw Meghan chat with different celebrity pals, including tennis icon Serena Williams, legendary singer Mariah Carey, and socialite Paris Hilton. But when the Sussexes' deal with the streaming platform came to an end, they were brutally described as "f***ing grifters" by a top Spotify executive. Bill Simmons, head of podcast innovation and monetisation at Spotify, hit out at the Sussexes in an episode of his own podcast, saying: "The f***ing grifters. That's the podcast we should have launched with them." Get Royal Family updates straight to your WhatsApp!
