BBC apologises after David Walliams makes ‘completely unacceptable' Nazi salutes
The incident took place during a taping of the Christmas special for panel show Would I Lie To You, with The Times claiming the Little Britain star, 53, made the grossly offensive gesture not once but twice.
The salutes occurred while Walliams's teammate – Call the Midwife actress Helen George – who was recalling the time she sprained her wrist during the Strictly Come Dancing tour in 2015 'from waving too much'.
As she tried to convince David Mitchell's team that the anecdote was true, she started re-enacting the waving, which is when Walliams joined in with his own exaggerated flailing, resulting in the Nazi salute.
After being reprimanded by the host, Rob Brydon, the filming moved on but as lewd jokes were swapped, Walliams then repeated the action but this time with a 'sexual twist'.
Per The Times, one audience member said: 'It was all very weird. There were gasps from the audience, and the other panellists all looked very uncomfortable.'
Another X user, @mirrandaYC added: 'Didn't have david walliams doing a Nazi salute at the Would I Lie To You Christmas taping on my 2025 bingo card.'
Sources at the BBC and the show's production company, Zeppotron told the publication that there was no chance of the footage being broadcast.
Facebook user Alan Robert Booth called him an 'entitled idiot'.
A BBC spokesperson apologised to those present, saying: 'The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable and we apologise to all at the recording for the offence caused.'
This has been echoed by Banijay UK (Zeppotron's owner) who added: 'Any attempt at humour regarding this deeply offensive gesture, whether broadcast or not, is completely unacceptable in any context.
'It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused.'
It is the latest incident in a career filled with controversy.
The former Britain's Got Talent judge was removed from his role in 2022 after leaked recordings showed him making offensive remarks about the contestants.
Meanwhile, his tenure on the comedy series co-created with Matt Lucas, Little Britain, has faced mounting criticism for its depiction of certain characters branded 'explicitly racist' such as the use of blackface.
Nevertheless, despite the show's controversial sketches, it has found a new audience on TikTok with clips regularly going viral among the Gen Z audience for its dark humour.
In 2023, after rumours of a reboot, Lucas shut down the idea saying that it was simply 'not true'.
The co-creators do have a podcast together, Making A Scene, where they 'turn their famous friends' lives into cinematic masterpieces.'
In 2024, the children's author called cancel culture 'exhausting'.
'[The issue] is complicated, but you just look at each joke as it comes really.

'I kind of think people haven't lost a sense of humour in the way that it's often portrayed,' he told The Daily Telegraph at the time.
He is not the first high-profile figure to be embroiled in a Nazi salute controversy this year.
Elon Musk faced backlash after making a movement that resembled the salute in January. However, he firmly denied that the gesture he made was the one historically linked to German fascism.

Line of Duty set for 2026 return as Adrian Dunbar updates
The award-winning hit police drama, which first aired from 2012 to 2021, featured Dunbar as Ted Hastings alongside stars Vicky McClure and Martin Compston. Rumours believed that the sixth series would be the last for Line of Duty, but Dunbar has given fans a hopeful update on a new series that could see it return by 2026. Line of Duty 'returning next year' In an interview with The Times, Dunbar said that he is ready to return to filming and hopes the BBC will make an official announcement soon. He shared: "We're really excited about getting our hands on a Line of Duty script, to see what happens to us. Jed [Mercurio] is writing. We've talked to the BBC. "It is down to the BBC to make an announcement, but we're keeping our fingers crossed that next year we'll be working on a new series. "No doubt Jed will think of some interesting twists and turns." The final of the sixth series of Line of Duty was highly anticipated as audiences all awaited the reveal of the corrupt officer known as 'H'. The reveal saw DCI Ian Buckells (Nigel Boyle) to be 'H' and that he became corrupt for the money. Fans were split by the ending of Line of Duty, as Dunbar admits that he knows it was a "frustrating" end. He shared: "When you find out it is this idiot, Buckells, it is so frustrating. "There is a scene where the three of us are told who it is, and we look at each other and go, 'What?' "We asked Jed to write that scene because we realised how our audience would feel." The TV presenter, historian and former Strictly star is back on Channel 5 with the new series Pompeii: Life in the City with Dan Snow Dan Snow has carved out a career as a much-loved historian and TV presenter - despite going against his famous father's advice to follow in his footsteps. Now 46, Dan - known for Battlefield Britain, Dan Snow 's Norman Walks and Filthy Cities - is back on our TV screens with a new Channel 5 series, Pompeii: Life in the City with Dan Snow. He teams up with fellow historian Dr Kate Lister to reveal what it would've really been like to live in Pompeii - the world's best preserved Roman city. During the opening episode, Dan and Kate take a look at the working lives of Pompeii's people, from the very rich to the very poor. Ahead of the new series, we take a look at Dan's life... Being 'discovered' Born in London in 1978, Dan graduated form Oxford University with first-class honours in Modern History, which seemed inevitable after his childhood. In a previous interview, he said: "I was a pretty average kid at primary school. My parents lifted me with the support they gave me at home: and whenever we went on holiday or days out we were always doing history-related projects. We made video films about wherever we were: the battlefield at Hastings, Bodiam Castle. We'd draw maps, too: and we'd make diaries. Dad still has them," reports MailOnline. "At the weekends my dad didn't go to watch football; he took me to museums. A call came into his father trying to get him on board for a history programme with his son. He said that his father 'originally said 'no'' but later changed his mind. Dan said: 'He also took me around Barnes Pond in south-west London and he said 'you're better than this', which I wish was true.' The presenter said his father had 'hoped' he would choose another profession as he admired the people he interviewed. He also said: 'I'd die now if my kids wanted to become broadcasters. I'm like, 'please go and become bioengineers or something exciting'.' 'Royal' wife In November 2010, Dan married the criminologist and philanthropist Lady Edwina Louise Grosvenor, second daughter of The 6th Duke of Westminster. The couple have three children, the eldest and youngest being daughters. Through her mother, she is descended from the Romanov imperial family of Russia and the Russian writer Alexander Pushkin. Her godmother was Diana, Princess of Wales. Dan previously said of meeting Edwina: "'I'd like to be able to say we met trekking across a desert, but we met at a wedding, which I'm afraid is very predictable. We were sitting next to one another at the reception: the person who did the seating plan set us up. I knew straight away she was the one for me," reports MailOnline.
