Need to encourage leaders like Pinarayi Vijayan: Kamal Haasan
He was speaking at the release of a documentary Pinarayi the Legend brought out by the Kerala Secretariat Employees' Association in connection with the fourth anniversary of the second Left Democratic Front (LDF) government led by Mr. Vijayan on Wednesday.
The actor who had kicked up a controversy with his recent statement that the Kannada language was 'born out of Tamil,' leading to a fierce backlash, began his speech in Malayalam. He made it a point to underline that Kerala was his State too and he was thankful to Malayalis for counting him as one of their own since his younger days.
'Proven the opposite'
The actor who then shifted to speaking in Tamil so that what he said 'could be heard there too' said there were complaints that south India was not flourishing but Mr. Vijayan was one of the leaders who had proven the opposite.
He said their political ideologies might diverge but when it came to social service, both he and Mr. Vijayan were comrades. People should be made the centre of all ideology. 'We are all workers. Mr. Vijayan is a leader of the workers,' the actor said.
Kerala, he said, had everything going for it to make progress. It was the State's need that Mr. Vijayan live a long and healthy life.
Mr. Vijayan's birthday was celebrated by cutting a cake.
Unbreakable bond
Welcoming the actor, Mr. Vijayan said Kerala was the actor's home. He had forged an unbreakable bond with the audience here. He had also shown that an artiste had a social commitment beyond art, and had led many protests for social justice in recent times. Mr. Haasan cared about people and had a Left mindset, Mr. Vijayan said.
He spoke about the LDF returning to power for a historic second consecutive term and the response of the people to public meetings held in connection with the fourth anniversary of the government.
The 30-minute documentary throws light on Mr. Vijayan's life and political career.

Ability Foundation to host disability film fest from July 7 to 10
A national cross-disability NGO, Ability Foundation, is set to host its ninth edition 'AbilityFEST 2025-India International Disability Film Festival' from July 7 to 10 at PVR-INOX Sathyam Cinemas in the city. The festival will also screen shortlisted films on disability inclusion from the competition, '60 seconds to Fame-All India One Minute Film Competition on Disability'. Festival chairperson actor-director Revathy said the competition received entries from all over the country, and the films featured in the festival represent 11 countries. 'Our focus is on films made by people with disabilities, about people with disabilities, essentially through the eyes of what the world could be when it is inclusive,' Ms. Revathy said. 'Being a jury member of this film festival, you understand what society is, where we are, where the people are, and what their thought process is,' said composer A.R. Rahman, Chair of the jury. Actor Simran in the jury panel added: 'To express everything in 60 seconds is a difficult job, and all the one-minute films we received were inspiring and motivational to me.' Over the four days, the festival will screen a number of award-winning short films, documentaries, and features from around the world. The Tamil film Tourist Family will be screened with audio description for the blind, alongside Hindi films Ahaan and Sitaare Zameen Par. International titles will include films from Italy, the Netherlands, Mongolia, the U.K., Iran, the U.S., and Poland. 'People with disabilities are not suffering or unfortunate. They are living their lives the way they should be living. AbilityFEST is an important part of what we do to bring this message to the public,' said Jayshree Raveendran, festival director. Additional rice: CM urges parties to protest against Centre's stance
Accusing the Union government of persisting with its anti-Kerala stance, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said that even the State's demand for additional allocation of rice during the Onam season has been rejected. He made a call for a united protest of all political parties to correct the Centre's stance against Kerala.
