'A devotee slipped': Mansa Devi temple on what led to Haridwar stampede; 6 killed, dozens injured
The chaos, which unfolded early Sunday morning, was reportedly triggered by a rumour of a snapped electric wire. However, officials said the tragedy occurred after a devotee slipped amid heavy crowding on the temple steps.
Mahant Ravindra Puri, president of the Mansa Devi temple trust, said the tragedy was caused when a devotee slipped amid a surge of pilgrims approaching the shrine. 'This is not an incident of electrocution, but there are no indications of such happening...
We will assist the victim families... It happened as a huge crowd gathered here; the police were informed, barricades were put up, but still the crowd came up and someone slipped, due to which the entire incident took place,' Puri told ANI.
The state disaster management Centre confirmed that five people suffered serious injuries, while 23 others received minor wounds in the stampede that occurred around 9 am.
Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the district hospital to meet the injured and announced compensation for the victims' families — Rs 2 lakh for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

'An unfortunate incident has taken place in which six people have died and many others have been injured in a stampede at the Mansa Devi temple due to a rumour... A magisterial inquiry has been ordered, the injured have been shifted to hospital and rescue operations are underway.
.. Strict action will be taken against whoever is found guilty... All possible efforts are being made to help the injured,' Dhami said.
AIIMS Rishikesh director Dr Meenu Singh said that four people are in critical condition after the stampede at Haridwar's Mansa Devi Temple on Sunday morning.
She said that out of the 10 patients currently admitted to AIIMS Rishikesh, two were children.
"The incident took place around 9 am, and patients started coming in around 11 am. So far, 15 patients have been brought here and 4-5 have been sent back because they sustained minor injuries. Out of the 10 patients admitted, two are children. Four are in a critical condition... Treatment of all the patients is underway...," Dr Singh told ANI.
Earlier, Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also met the injured and their families at AIIMS Rishikesh.
A magisterial inquiry has been ordered, with Haridwar District Magistrate Mayur Dixit leading the investigation. 'We found through photos and videos that someone spread the rumour that an electric wire had snapped. While looking at the injured or the dead, we did not get any such indication...We will investigate who spread the rumour,' Dixit said.
Crowd management lapses are now under scrutiny. According to Mahant Puri, the Mansa Devi temple can be accessed by ropeway, vehicles, or an old walking route from Har Ki Pauri. Despite police barricades and alerts, the influx of pilgrims overwhelmed the arrangements.
Minister Ganesh Joshi also visited the hospital and said, '14 seriously injured people have been referred to AIIMS Rishikesh and others are being treated at the district hospital.
I have met them and they are fine... The government is providing full support to the victims... It would not be appropriate to draw any conclusion until a detailed investigation is done...'
Eyewitness accounts painted a disturbing picture of the crowd's chaos. One injured man said, 'There are just 20-25 steps before the temple premises, the crowd became uncontrollable... I fell down along with 10 to 12 others... I found three of my family members, but two are still missing...'
The chief minister's Office has confirmed that a detailed review of security and crowd control measures is underway to prevent such incidents in the future.

A 42-year-old man was allegedly bludgeoned to death at a farmhouse in Chhattarpur by his colleague after he refused to lend him Rs 10,000, police said on Sunday. The body of the deceased, Sita Ram – who was employed at the farmhouse for the last 10 years – was found drowned in a septic tank at the property on Saturday. The accused, Chandra Prakash (47), who worked as a driver at the same farmhouse, was arrested from Palam in Southwest Delhi. Police said a missing person report for Sita Ram, originally from Uttar Pradesh, was filed at the Mehrauli police station on July 26. 'Sita Ram used to work as a help at the farmhouse and was alone the night of the incident, as the owner had gone out of Delhi. On July 26 morning, staffers found the doors of the farmhouse open, and Sita Ram missing. After the missing report was filed, his body was recovered from the septic tank of the farmhouse,' DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan said. While questioning the staff at the farmhouse, the police found that Chandra Prakash was missing. He was later traced to Palam in Dwarka. Chandra Prakash, who hails from Almora and has been the driver at the farmhouse for the last seven years, told the police that a loan of Rs 10,000 made him kill Sita Ram. 'He admitted to the murder, stating that he had demanded Rs 10,000 from Sita Ram and, upon refusal, killed him with a hammer, and dumped the body in the septic tank,' the DCP said.

HC questions cops on forced potency test
Hyderabad: The Telangana high court questioned whether cops can force anybody to undergo a potency test or any medical tests unless they are allowed by the law or with consent. The HC made the observations while granting relief to a techie who alleged coercion from the cops to undergo a potency test. The man's second wife accused him of allegedly cheating her by concealing his impotency during the marriage, following which Kukatpally police registered a case. Police registered a case against the petitioner in June 2025. His wife, 33, alleged that his first marriage also broke up after his first wife discovered his impotency. From the time she realised his impotency, his father was harassing her sexually, she alleged in her complaint to the police. "He and his father cheated me by inducing me into this marriage with him, harassing me physically, mentally, and emotionally," alleged the woman. "The investigating officer was trying to serve notice to him under Section 35(3) of BNSS, and as he did not receive the notice, the notice was sent to him by registered post," submitted the govt pleader. 1 2 Chandigarh: A day after the UT police dismantled an international drug syndicate operating in the Tricity, arresting three foreign nationals staying illegally in the country — with two of them living in Kharar, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Chandigarh Zonal Unit and Punjab Police jointly conducted a search operation in the Kharar area of Mohali district on Sunday to clamp down on drug trafficking and overstaying foreign nationals. Among the arrested individuals, Imoru Damian (31), a Nigerian national, and Toufe Yousouf (30) from Cape Town, South Africa stayed in a rented flat in Kharar. Police seized significant quantities of cocaine and amphetamine, along with a Honda City car used in the operation. The NCB-police joint operation specifically targeted rented accommodations near a private university and Gharuan village, areas flagged for developing into clusters of foreign nationals—mainly from African countries. During the drive, teams inspected around 20 flats and paying guest accommodations (PGs), checking the visa and passport details of foreign residents. Officials said the operation was a preventive measure to address concerns about "ghettoisation" and the potential misuse of rented premises by foreign nationals involved in illegal activities, particularly drug trade.
