Masked cyclist 'pulled gun from his socks and threatened cop'
The officer, who was out tackling a youths said to be riding e-bikes dangerously, came face-to-face with someone who was 'brandishing' what appeared to be a firearm in Broughton in Salford at around noon on Tuesday (May 20, 2025), according to Greater Manchester Police.
The cop was said to have drawn his Taser stun gun and shouted 'Taser, Taser - get down, get down' at a fleeing cyclist who then pulled what appeared to be a handgun from his socks, according to eye-witnesses spoken to by the Manchester Evening News.

Armed police and the police helicopter was scrambled following the drama close the junction with Great Clowes Street and Upper Camp Street in Broughton. Two suspects, aged 20 and 21, were later arrested about a mile away on North George Street.
The drama was witnessed by two Salford Council parking enforcement officers, who were in a liveried vehicle, who went to the aid of the police officer who had pursued a cyclist onto Upper Camp Street.
One of the officers told the Manchester Evening News: "We jumped out of the car and went to help the officer. We saw that he was struggling and then brandished the Taser and he tried to Taser him but it didn't work. We just jumped out and tried to assist and we ran over."
He said they 'back off' when they saw the cyclist pull what appeared to be a 'black hand pistol' from his sock. The cyclist than fell from his bike and fled towards some houses, jumping over fences and through back gardens. He was said to have thrown away the gun as he ran.
The cyclist had been wearing a balaclava over his head, a black top and grey tracksuit bottoms, he said. He went on that the officer was 'on his own' and that they were determined to help.
Today forensics specialists were examining the scene, particularly the push bike on which the gunman had been riding and which was abandoned.
The two people arrested were being held on suspicion of possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence.
"Both remain in police custody for questioning," said a statement from GMP, who also confirmed an e-bike was recovered on Fenny Street and a suspected firearm was found on Upper Camp Street.
Following the drama, Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles from our Salford district said: 'This incident is entirely unacceptable and highlights how quickly situations faced by our frontline officers can escalate. Our officers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and should never be placed in such danger.
'We will always use every resource available to bring those responsible to justice. No one is above the law, and we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour on our streets.'

Huge police presence as protestors clash outside Altrincham hotel housing asylum seekers
Protesters clashed outside a hotel in Altrincham housing asylum seekers on Sunday evening (July 27). Groups waving Union Jack flags which read 'Uniting Britain' and 'The Great Britain National Protest' gathered opposite the Cresta Court hotel on Church Street. The hotel closed last year, with all future bookings moved to alternative hotels in and around Trafford. It came after the owners of the venue reportedly agreed a deal with Serco. Never miss a story with the MEN's daily Catch Up newsletter - get it in your inbox by signing up here It was announced by Labour leader of Trafford Council, Tom Ross, that the hotel closed as a result of the move; a decision made by the Home Office. On Sunday (July 27), counter-protesters also gathered directly outside the venue, on the opposite side of the road, equally brandishing banners and signs. Plaques which read 'Stop the far right' and 'stand up to racism' were waved as groups shouted across to one another. Chants of 'say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here' were also shouted into a microphone. Greater Manchester Police were also in attendance. The force said during the afternoon that nobody was arrested. They have been contacted for an update by the M.E.N. Groups of officers were seen talking to a number of protestors who had also positioned themselves on a grass verge beside the road. Multiple police vehicles and vans were also in attendance as the two groups were kept separate. An army of officers and Tactical Aid teams were also seen surrounding the perimeter of the hotel. Officers were seen speaking to members of both groups as insults were hurled across both sides. A post shared on Facebook indicated that The Great British National Protest had joined with the Altrincham Against the Cresta Court Hotel group to host the demonstration. They claimed it was 'to help keep pressure on this government and keep rising awareness on this issue.' The protest was also livestreamed on YouTube to thousands of viewers. --- Day in day out, our reporters in the Manchester Evening News newsroom bring you remarkable stories from all aspects of Mancunian life.
