India's organised sector witnessed its strongest monthly expansion to date in May, with Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) reporting net payroll additions of over 20 lakh, the highest since formal tracking began in April 2018, provisional data from labour ministry showed on Monday.
The surge spans gender, sectors and regions, underscoring steady formalisation of the workforce.
Union labour and employment minister Mansukh Mandaviya described the milestone as "a testament to the growing strength of India's formal employment landscape". He credited it to "the direct result of PM Narendra Modi's visionary leadership and govt's unwavering commitment to pro-youth, pro-worker reforms", adding that "ease of doing business and economic empowerment is yielding tangible outcomes for a Viksit Bharat".
Women's participation in the formal workforce also saw strides, with net female payroll additions reaching 4,25,000, marking a 7.5% increase over April and a 15% year-on-year rise. First-time formal job entrants numbered 9,42,000, up from 8,49,000 in April, driven largely by youth - workers aged 18-25 - who accounted for 8,73,000 net additions amid a 15.1% month-on-month rise. Job-switchers who transferred their EPFO accounts without withdrawing funds totalled 16 lakh in May, rising 2.1% from April and 14.3% from last year.

The ministry noted that such behaviour "safeguards long-term financial well being and extends their social security protection".
Sector-wise, manpower suppliers led with around 4,63,000 hires, followed by expert services at 1,38,000. Industries spanning textiles, garments, security, contracting, engineering, cleaning and finance contributed significantly, collectively supporting the surge. Regionally, Maharashtra led the pack by contributing 20.3% of net additions, with Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana each delivering over 5%.
Together, the top five states and UTs accounted for nearly 60% of national payroll growth.
May's historic payroll figures reflect more than seasonal hiring - it signals an evolving economic structure where formal employment, especially among youth and women, is gaining traction. The sharp rise in first-time entrants and account portability suggests enhanced job confidence and workforce fluidity. Still, sustaining this momentum hinges on ensuring the longevity and quality of these emerging formal jobs, requiring stronger skill development and social protection frameworks to translate job numbers into secure, resilient livelihoods across the economy.

India, Maldives sign 8 key deals across finance, digital, fisheries sectors

India and the Maldives on Friday exchanged eight key agreements covering a wide range of sectors, including Line of Credit, debt repayment, fisheries, digital transformation, and Unified Payments Interface (UPI), in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. "Delighted to exchange eight Agreements related to Line of Credit, debt repayment, FTA, fisheries & aquaculture, digital transformation, pharmacopoeia and UPI in the presence of PM @narendramodi and President @MMuizzu today in Male," External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar posted on X. Confirming the development, the President's Office of the Maldives stated, "President witnesses exchange of key MoUs and agreements between the Maldives and India." The exchange of agreements set the tone for high-level discussions that followed, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Mohamed Muizzu took stock of the implementation of the India-Maldives Joint Vision for a 'Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership', with the Prime Minister reiterating India's commitment to deepening bilateral ties under its "Neighbourhood First" and Vision MAHASAGAR policies. PM Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Maldives, met President Muizzu at the President's Office in Male. President Muizzu appreciated India's commitment of being the First Responder for Maldives when it came to dealing with any crises. The two leaders discussed cooperation in the fields of development partnership, infrastructure support, capacity building, climate action and health. They also called for further strengthening defence and maritime security cooperation and, in this regard, noted the collaboration between the two countries under the Colombo Security Conclave. The two leaders also reviewed the economic partnership between the two countries. Prime Minister underscored that the proposed Free Trade Agreement and the Bilateral Investment Treaty would open new opportunities for both sides. Noting that the two countries must take advantage of the digital economy, especially to promote tourism, he welcomed the recent understandings on UPI adoption, acceptance of RUPAY card and trade in local currencies. The two leaders highlighted that the close development partnership between the countries was adding new value to the already strong people-to-people ties. The two leaders noted that, as Global South partners, they would continue to work on issues such as climate change, promotion of renewable energy, disaster risk reduction and weather science in the interests of the planet and its people. Prime Minister thanked President Muizzu for his strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack, and the solidarity extended to India in the fight against terrorism. The two leaders witnessed exchange of six MOUs in the fields of fisheries and aquaculture, meteorology, digital public infrastructure, UPI, Indian pharmacopoeia and concessional Line of Credit. The new Line of Credit offers Rupees 4850 crores [ approx $550 million] in support of infrastructure development and other activities in Maldives. An Amendatory Agreement for the existing LoCs was also exchanged. It reduces Maldives's annual debt repayment obligations by 40% [from $51 million to 29 million]. Both sides also exchanged Terms of Reference of the proposed Free Trade Agreement. The two leaders also virtually inaugurated a roads and drainage system project in Addu city and six High Impact Community Development Projects in other cities. Prime Minister handed over 3,300 social housing units and 72 vehicles for Maldives National Defence Force and Immigration authorities. Prime Minister also handed over two units of Aarogya Maitri Health Cube [BHISHM] sets to the Government of Maldives. With state-of-the-art medical equipment as part of the cube, it can provide medical aid to 200 casualties with in-built support to sustain a crew of six medical personnel for up to 72 hours. In keeping with their deep commitment to conserving nature, the two leaders planted mango saplings as part of India's "Ek Pedh Maa Ke Naam" [Plant for Mother] and Maldives's "Pledge of 5 million Tree Plantation" campaigns. Prime Minister reiterated India's commitment to support Maldives and its people, as per its requirements and priorities, and for the peace, progress and prosperity of the Indian Ocean region. Ahead of the meeting, Prime Minister was received by President Muizzu and accorded a ceremonial welcome at Republic Square. The meeting was marked by warmth and a reaffirmation of the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations. Prime Minister expressed heartfelt appreciation for the gracious hospitality extended to him and his delegation and conveyed his best wishes on the historic occasion of the 60th anniversary of the independence of Maldives as also on the special occasion of the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The two leaders reflected on the deep bonds of friendship and trust that have been built over centuries, strengthened by strong people-to-people ties. Mumbai: India's equity indices fell nearly 1% on Friday, marking their fourth straight week of losses, as weaker earnings from index heavyweights and subdued sentiment across Asian markets weighed on investor confidence. "There is also investor nervousness around the India-US trade deal ." Bajaj Finance fell almost 5%. Agencies Corrective Phase Live Events It emerged as the biggest loser on the benchmark Nifty on Friday. Shriram Finance and IndusInd Bank fell 3.6% and 2.6%, respectively. The Nifty PSU Bank Index dropped 1.7%, while the Bank Nifty shed 0.9%. The Nifty Metal and Nifty IT indices fell 1.6% and 1.4%, respectively. The Nifty Auto Index ended 1.3% lower. The Volatility Index, or VIX - the market's fear gauge - gained 5.2% to 11.3 on Friday, indicating traders expect higher risk in the near term. Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong fell 1.1% while Japan and China declined 0.9% and 0.3%, respectively. Taiwan ended marginally lower and South Korea rose 0.2%. At home, the broader market bore the greater brunt of the weaker sentiment with the Nifty Mid-cap 150 and Small-cap 250 indices declining 1.6% and 2%, respectively, on Friday. Out of the 4,154 shares traded on the BSE, 1,061 advanced, while 2,969 declined. Over the past week, the mid-cap index shed 1.6%, while the small-cap index fell 3%. Technical analysts said that stocks had run up significantly since April, and muted results by index heavyweights led to profit booking after the sharp rally. "Overall, the market has been in a corrective phase in July - initially a time-wise correction that kept the markets in a tight range - but today the index decisively breached the key support level of 24,950, indicating that a price-wise correction is likely in the short term," said Ruchit Jain, head of technical research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services . "The 24,650 level is the next key mark that offers a good buying opportunity." In the last three months, the benchmark Nifty has gained 3.3%, while the Nifty Mid-cap and Small-cap indices have surged 9.2% and 12%, respectively. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 1,980 crore on Friday. Their domestic counterparts purchased shares worth Rs 2,138.6 crore. In July, overseas investors divested Rs 22,288 crore. "The benchmark gained significantly between April and June, unlike in prior periods when July typically ended on a positive note," said Jain. "This prior outperformance and the ongoing correction suggest that July is likely to close lower, despite being a seasonally strong month." Jain added that investors could consider buying on dips from a medium-term perspective, as these are corrections within a broader uptrend. Aggarwal said the tariff on India is unlikely to be higher than that on China or Vietnam, and once the deal is finalised, the markets could rebound. "Until further clarity emerges on the US-India trade deal, the markets are expected to remain sideways due to a lack of direction amid foreign selling," said Aggarwal. "The markets are expected to end lower in July, and this sideways movement could persist into next month."
