Wooden floors will appear cleaner and less scratched if you use 20p common item

Daily Record21-07-2025
Wooden floors can quickly collect dust, which can wear down the surface.
In recent years, wooden floors in homes have soared in popularity due to their sleekness, as well as their cleaning convenience. Spills and stains are easier to wipe up on hardwood flooring making them appeal more to people with pets and young children.

However, they can become dirtier during the summer months. This is because dust is lighter and more airborne in summer. Static electricity can also build up on wood as dry air rises, causing dust and other debris to stick and create a gritty layer that feels like sandpaper.

However, the experts at Luxury Living Fort Lauderdale have now shared an easy way to restore your natural floors shine as well as how to keeping them clean and all you need are some teabags.

They said: 'Throughout history, black tea has been used to mop hardwood floors. The tanic acid in black tea helps clean and add shine otherwise dull, old flooring.'
The Express reports black tea is an old-school method to clean wooden floors as it contains a substance called tannins, which is acidic so it can easily cut through dirt, dust and grease build up.

It naturally shines wood to make the floor look polished and also slightly darken minor scratches to help make them less noticeable.
Tea cannot fill in a deep scratch to make it disappear, but it helps make a surface level scratch blend to the surrounding wood to improve the floor's overall appearance.

How to clean a wooden floor with tea bags
You will need:
A kettle (or pot)
Five to six tea bags
A mop bucket
Method:

All you need to do is fill up a kettle, (or a pot) and wait until the water has boiled. When the water is boiling hot, pour it into a heatproof bowl and add five to six teabags.
Leave the bowl alone for 10 to 15 minutes until the water is completely cool and safe to handle. If the water is still hot, you can add a few ice cubes to quickly make the water cold.
Then, remove the teabags and carefully pour the mixture into your mop bucket. Use the solution to mop the floor like you normally would.
Make sure to wring out the mop each time you use it on the floor, and then let the floor dry. Your floor should be completely clean and look better-maintained without having to spend money or use a harsh chemical cleaner.

Vet clinic worker shares her top 8 dog breeds but warns they're 'not for everyone'

She recommends getting any of these pooches if you're a first-time owner Bringing a pet into your home can be wonderful, but dogs are a big responsibility, so it's crucial to find the right breed that fits well into your home, matches your lifestyle and won't cause too much disruption. ‌ There are so many breeds with fantastic temperaments and are excellent with children, while others make brilliant guard dogs. Some breeds simply love a good snooze and a cuddle on the sofa. ‌ For those on the hunt, a woman who works at a veterinary clinic has shared her top recommendations for dog breeds for first-time owners. Sage Overson has been sharing her top tips online, prompting millions of responses. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The vet clinic worker previously discussed breeds she wouldn't own, and recently shared a list of dogs she would consider owning. There is one caveat, though. Sage is not an expert - so don't take her word for gospel. "These are breeds I've been loving since working with them - not professional recommendations," she insisted. "Even a perfect dog isn't a perfect fit for everyone and every dog is different. Please do your research," reports the Express. 1. Australian Shepherd Sage posted a picture of her "little baby angel princess" lying peacefully on a sofa. She noted that Aussie dogs are "nuts", which makes them entertaining pets. She also maintains that they are quick learners and "all so unique." This breed is medium-sized and known for their energy, intelligence and herding abilities. These dogs enjoy running around and playing ball games. ‌ 2. Great Pyrenees These mountain dogs are large, fluffy and a powerful breed. They are recognised for their strong instincts, but also their calm and gentle temperament. These obedient dogs are incredibly loyal and devoted to their families, which means they can also be stubborn. ‌ Sage said these dogs are her "favourite clients". She said the puppies "could be mistaken for a polar bear", and you could trust this breed with a newborn baby. 3. Poodle While a lot of people love miniature and toy poodles, Sage insists that the standard poodle will make a brilliant pet. She described the breed as "angel on earth", noting the dogs "wouldn't hurt a fly". ‌ They aim to please and are quite easy going. These dogs are affectionate and playful. They love being social and part of family activities. 4. Bull Terrier This breed is often on lists of dangerous dog breeds, as many people view them as aggressive with a tendency to bite. However, with the proper training they can be a brilliant pet and they are always devoted to their owner. ‌ Sage said: "Hear me out! So emotionally intelligent and in tune. A misunderstood breed. I think they're so cute." 5. Basset Hound American Kennel Club states: "The Basset Hound is a perennial favourite of dog lovers all over the world. This low-slung and low-key hound can be sometimes stubborn, but is always charming." ‌ This breed is renowned for its incredible sense of smell and loyalty. Although not the fastest dog, they can walk for extended periods. However, be prepared for their loud, resonating bark. Sage commented: "I'll deal with the ear infections and bad skin, they're so precious." 6. Golden Retriever ‌ Who doesn't adore a golden retriever? This breed, recognised by its striking golden coat, is a favourite amongst families due to its gentle and affectionate nature. These dogs also enjoy walks and playtime. Sage shared: "The OG family dog, for good reason, before the doodle. Perfect for active families, happy dogs." 7. Shih Tzu ‌ "Never thought I'd be into these things but they're so unintentionally funny and chill," Sage laughed. Pretty sure they live forever." These adorable dogs can make excellent family pets - they are known for being affectionate and forming strong bonds with their families. They can be a bit stubborn and lack patience, but training can help. Their size makes them easy to handle, too. ‌ 8. Rottweiler These dogs are large and make excellent guard dogs. They are protective, form strong bonds with their families, and are affectionate. But due to their size and protectiveness, they require extensive training and experienced owners. "Rottweiler - literally bred to watch little kids," Sage stated. All about early socialisation and they'll be the most loyal companions." She did note, however, that they drool quite a bit. Sage also expressed her fondness for Labradors, Pitbulls and Dobermans. She finds Whippets "awkward" but charming and has "only heard good things" about the breed.

Householders urged to leave bowls of vinegar out in homes overnight

Experts believe the easy hack is surprisingly effective in tackling one common issue Homeowners with lingering food smells can tackle the issue with various methods. However, according to an expert, one low-cost hack will quickly do the trick. Joyce French, cleaning expert at said simply leaving a bowl of vinegar out overnight will be sure to banish any bad odours in your home without having to use harsh chemicals. ‌ The white vinegar solution is great for eliminating alkaline odours and making them less noticeable. Vinegar also has antibacterial properties that can help stop odour-causing bacteria in their tracks. To get rid of persistent cooking odours, Joyce suggests leaving small bowls of vinegar in a room overnight. ‌ She also suggests simmering them with water on the stove. For those worried that the smell of vinegar may take over, Joyce said it will quickly disappear along with the offending smells it's tackling. ‌ The cleaning pro also said apple cider vinegar is a trusty tool to have at home to help solve offensive odours. The solution, which has slightly sweeter undertones, can be used on curtains or upholstery by misting them with a solution of apple cider vinegar and water. This will combat odours without damaging the colour of delicate fabrics or leaving a chemical residue. If you want to avoid liquids, fresh herb bundles of rosemary, thyme, and mint can help improve the smell around the home and help with closures when small bundles are hung in wardrobes or placed in drawers to keep clothes smelling fresh, reports the Express. ‌ Simmering the peels of fruits like oranges and lemons in a pot on the stove is another great way to get your home smelling its best. It also leaves a lovely fresh aroma. You can even combine them with white white vinegar to make your own natural cleaning solution with degreasing and antibacterial properties. ‌ You need only put the peels in a large glass jar, submerge them in the vinegar, and let the mixture sit for about two weeks. This will allow the peels to infuse with the vinegar to produce an effective natural cleaning solution. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Meanwhile, simmering a handful of herbs in water is said to be "ideal" for getting a fresher scent straight away. ‌ A few drops of vanilla extract on cotton wool can also work wonders if you stash them in areas where bad smells accumulate or hide them in the corners of rooms where odours may accumulate. You may also add a teaspoon of vanilla extract to an oven-safe dish and warm it at a low temperature for half an hour to make your home smell fragrant and fresh. Joyce recommends various other methods for tackling stenches and improving the smell, including essential oils like lemon, lavender, tea tree, eucalyptus, and cedarwood. These oils can be used to refresh carpets and fabrics by adding five to ten drops to water in a spray bottle. Baking soda can also be a great tool for seeing off smells as chemicals in the powder counteract the acids that cause bad odors and produce a compound that's less odourous, the expert says. ‌ It can be used in different ways, but on carpets, rugs, and mattresses, for example, all you need to do is sprinkle some on and leave it for an hour before vacuuming the power up. In enclosed spaces like a fridge, you can also simply leave the powder in a vented jar until the smells have reduced or cleared. Coffee grounds can also be used to soak up unpleasant pongs in the fridge by putting some in a bowl and leaving it inside for a few days. The expert says you can also use them on carpets and upholstered furniture by sprinkling some on and vacuuming them off after 15 minutes. Joyce says houseplants are another thing to consider with particular types like peace lilies, spider plants, and snake plants known to be particularly effective at removing airborne toxins and improving air quality in room lots of people use.

OnlyFans model builds £10m mansion with 25ft ceilings for her super tall family

Marie Temara is 6ft 3in, an entire foot taller than the average woman in the UK, while her mum Christine, 63, is 6ft 5in and her dad Michael, 65, is 6ft 3in. A family of five who are so tall that they bump their heads on doorframes are building a supersized £10m mansion with 25ft ceilings and 12ft doors. ‌ Marie Temara is 6ft 3in, an entire foot taller than the average woman in the UK, while her mum Christine, 63, is 6ft 5in and her dad Michael, 65, is 6ft 3in. ‌ The model also has two basketballer brothers, Troy, 27, who stands at 6ft 10in and Shane, 29, who reaches 6ft 9in. The family have become so sick of banging their heads while moving around their respective homes that they are now planning on knocking their houses down and building a towering mansion to live in together. ‌ "We're going the extra mile to make our home more comfortable to live in," Marie, who has 3m followers on Instagram, @marietemara, said. "Our houses are way too small for us because the ceilings are eight feet tall so we're going to knock them down. We're always touching the door frames, banging our heads and having to duck. ‌ "The toilets and showers are too low, we have to crouch down to wash our hair and the baths are too small to lie down in. We're going to have the ceilings and doors as tall as they can go and all the space we need." Marie, from Florida, US, currently lives in a £1.5m house with 8ft ceilings and a £75,000 gym that the fitness fanatic had installed herself. Meanwhile, retired 911 operator Christine and retired electrician Michael live in a £500,000 property next door. But because they weren't always wealthy, the family have always lived in homes unsuitable to their lofty heights. ‌ That's set to change following Marie's success on OnlyFans, which she joined in 2021. The adult star made £110,000 in her first month and now rakes in £7.5m per year. ‌ As a result, Marie has been able to help her parents retire and even bought them their current home. She also plans to fork out for the new mansion out of her earnings from the site. She said: "We didn't have that much money growing up, so we couldn't afford to make the house bigger like I can now. My brothers would smack their heads going down the stairs every time. ‌ "The houses we lived in were from the seventies, so we were hitting our heads on ceilings, and everything was too low, including the toilets and shower heads. We all had that problem growing up. "We are looking forward to having a home where we don't have to hunch, crouch, or worry about hitting our heads every time we walk through a room. Dad was an electrician, and he barely made anything. "He made £26,000 a year, and my mom was an emergency operator, so she didn't make much more than that. It was pretty hard, but they did a really good job of giving us everything that we'd ever needed. They just never had any money to buy anything for themselves. So they really put us first. "It will be nice to do this for them; they deserve it. This is something we've talked about for years, and I'm grateful I can finally make it happen for my family."
