JAKARTA: The Tanjungpinang Search and Rescue Agency has said that three people who went missing after a longboat capsized near Nenek Island, Batam, Riau Islands, on Wednesday (June 25) have been found dead.
Agency head Fazzli said the three victims were discovered on Friday morning, and their remains have been transported to the Riau Islands Police Bhayangkara Hospital in Batam for identification.
'Two of the victims have been identified, while authorities are still working to confirm the identity of the third,' he said on Friday (June 27), as reported by CNN Indonesia.
Fazzli added that the first victim was discovered around 6am by a fisherman near Buluh Bulang Island, approximately 13 kilometers from Nenek Island.
About two hours later, rescuers located the second victim near Panjang Island, around 10 kilometers from the accident site.
The third victim was also found later that morning by local fisherfolk near Tanjung Sauh Island, roughly 28 kilometers from Nenek Island.
Previously, the Tanjungpinang Search and Rescue Agency's head of operations, Eryk Subariyanto, said the agency had deployed a rescue boat, a motorized rubber boat, a thermal drone and handheld sonar devices to assist in locating the victims.
'We're also working with the Riau Islands Police, local Navy personnel, the coast guard and local residents in the search efforts,' Eryk said on Friday, as reported by Antaranews.
He added that on the third day of the operation, rescuers planned to expand the search area by two miles to both the north and south of the accident site.
'The search area was determined based on statements from surviving passengers, along with our projections of the victims' possible locations using tidal pattern analysis,' he said.
According to authorities, the victims and 10 others departed from Nenek Island at around 4pm on Wednesday to play in a soccer match on Setokok Island.
However, during the journey, their longboat was struck by strong waves and capsized.
Local residents rescued four passengers several hours after the accident.
Meanwhile, six others clung to the overturned longboat and managed to swim ashore when the vessel drifted close to an island around 9pm on Wednesday.
However, three passengers, 23-year-old Muhammad Fahri Kurniawan, 28-year-old Fadli and 24-year-old Firdaus, went missing following the incident.
Authorities previously said rescue efforts for the three missing victims were hampered by poor weather, strong winds and rough seas.
The Batam boat accident occurred just a month after another boat capsized near Zakat Beach in Bengkulu City, Bengkulu, resulting in eight deaths and dozens of injuries.
Bengkulu Search and Rescue Agency spokesperson Mega Maysilva said the boat, the KM Tiga Putra, was carrying 98 tourists and six crew members on a trip from Bengkulu City to Tikus Island on the morning of May 11, a journey that typically lasts between 40 and 60 minutes.
The accident occurred around 4pm as the boat was making its return trip to Bengkulu. "The boat's engine suddenly failed when it was hit by strong waves and a storm.
The vessel began rocking uncontrollably, throwing passengers into the sea before it ultimately sank," he said last month, as quoted by Kompas.
Preliminary investigations suggest negligence on the part of the ship operators, as the vessel was carrying passengers beyond its maximum capacity. - The Jakarta Post/ANN

Israeli court postpones Netanyahu appearance in graft trial

JERUSALEM: An Israeli court on Sunday postponed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's testimony in his corruption trial after he requested a delay with the suppport of US President Donald Trump, in a ruling published by the premier's party. "Following the explanations given... we partially accept the request and cancel at this stage Mr Netanyahu's hearings scheduled" for this week, the Jerusalem district court said in its ruling, published online by the Likud party. Netanyahu's lawyers had asked the court to excuse him from testifying over the next two weeks so he could focus on security issues following a ceasefire with Iran and amid ongoing fighting in Gaza where Israeli hostages are held. They had submitted Netanyahu's schedule to the court to demonstrate "the national need for the prime minister to devote all his time and energy to the political, national and security issues at hand." The court initially rejected the lawyers' request but said in its ruling on Sunday that it had changed its judgement after hearing arguments from the prime minister, the head of military intelligence and the chief of the Mossad spy agency. Trump on Wednesday described the case against Netanyahu as a "witch hunt", saying the trial "should be CANCELLED, IMMEDIATELY, or a Pardon given to a Great Hero." He added in a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday that the United States was "not going to stand" for the continued prosecution, prompting Netanyahu to thank him in a message on X. Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid on Thursday criticised Trump, saying he "should not interfere in a judicial trial in an independent country." Netanyahu has thanked Trump for his support in Israel's brief war against Iran, which ended with a ceasefire on June 24. Netanyahu has denied any wrongdoing and his supporters have described the long-running trial as politically motivated. In a first case, he and his wife, Sara, are accused of accepting more than US$260,000 worth of luxury goods such as cigars, jewellery and champagne from billionaires in exchange for political favours. In two other cases, Netanyahu is accused of attempting to negotiate more favourable coverage from two Israeli media outlets. During his current term, which started in late 2022, Netanyahu's government has proposed a series of far-reaching judicial reforms that critics say were designed to weaken the courts. Netanyahu has requested multiple postponements in the trial since it began in May 2020.--AFP

Gaza rescuers say Israeli forces kill 14, including children

GAZA CITY: Gaza's civil defence agency said Israeli air strikes and gunfire killed at least 14 people including three children in the war-stricken Palestinian territory on Sunday. Civil defence spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP that 13 people died in air strikes at four locations around the Gaza Strip, and another from Israeli fire near an aid distribution centre. The Israeli military told AFP it was not able to comment on the reported incidents but said it was fighting 'to dismantle Hamas military capabilities' in a campaign launched in 2023 against the Islamist militant group whose attack on Israel triggered the war. Restrictions on media in Gaza and difficulties in accessing many areas mean AFP is unable to independently verify the tolls and details provided by rescuers. Bassal said two children were killed in an air strike on their home in Gaza City's Zeitun neighbourhood in the early morning, and 'the house was completely destroyed.' A member of the family, Abdel Rahman Azzam, 45, told AFP he was at home and 'heard a huge explosion at my relative's house'. 'I rushed out in panic and saw the house destroyed and on fire,' he added. 'We evacuated more than 20 injured people, including two martyrs -- two children from the family. The screams of children and women were non-stop,' Azzam said. 'They bombed the house with a missile without any prior warning. This is a horrific crime. We sleep without knowing if we will wake up.' Elsewhere, Bassal said a drone strike on a tent housing displaced people near the southern city of Khan Yunis killed five people including a child. He said that other casualties included a young man killed 'by Israeli fire this morning while waiting for aid' near a humanitarian distribution centre in the southern city of Rafah. - Gaza evacuation order - The Israeli military issued an evacuation order on Sunday for parts of Gaza City and nearby areas in the territory's north, warning of imminent action there. The military 'will operate with intense force in these areas, and these military operations will intensify and expand... to destroy the capabilities of the terrorist organisations', military spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a statement posted on X. He told residents to 'evacuate immediately south' to Al-Mawasi area on the coast. Israel launched its offensive in October 2023 in response to the deadly Hamas attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. Israel's retaliatory military campaign has killed at least 56,412 people in Gaza, also mostly civilians, according to Hamas-run territory's health ministry. The United Nations considers these figures to be reliable. After claiming victory in a 12-day war against Iran that ended with a ceasefire on Tuesday, the Israeli military said it would refocus on its offensive in Gaza, where Palestinian militants still hold Israeli hostages.

Three killed, six injured in stampede at chariot festival in Puri, India

BHUBANESWAR, (India): Three people were killed and six injured in a stampede during a festival in eastern India on Sunday (June 29), officials said. "Three people have died and six sustained injuries; none of them are serious and all are out of danger," YB Khurania, director general of police in the state of Odisha, told Reuters. The incident occurred at dawn as thousands of Hindu devotees gathered at an annual chariot festival in Puri, said a senior administrative officer told Reuters. He asked not to be identified as he is not authorised to speak to the media. The Statesman reported that the stampede occured near the Gundicha temple (Temple of Lord Jagannath's aunt) in Puri during wee hours on Sunday, police said. The mishap took place at around 4.20am in front of three chariots of Lord Jagannath and His siblings—Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Apparently, poor crowd management and inadequate police deployment resulted in the tragic mishap. There was no presence of police or security forces anywhere near the chariots as the crowd surged to catch a glimpse of the deities during the morning hours. It was some local youths who tried to control the crowd and saved several people from getting stuck in the stampede. But for their timely voluntary act, the death toll might have been much higher, said eyewitnesses. AFP reported that Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the "tragic incident" occurred due to the "overwhelming rush of devotees". "I extend my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives," Majhi posted on social media platform X, adding that a probe was launched. "This negligence is unforgivable. I have directed an immediate investigation into the safety lapses and exemplary actions will be taken against those responsible." Stampedes occur routinely during large Hindu gatherings in the world's most-populous country, as huge crowds gather in tight spaces, often ignoring safety protocols. In January, at least 39 people were killed in a pre-dawn stampede during the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, northern India. - Reuters, The Statesman, AFP
