MLB AL Comeback Player of the Year Predictions: Odds, expert picks, including Jacob deGrom and Byron Buxton

NBC Sports3 days ago

The American League Comeback Player of the Year market has been an intriguing race that is now showing heavy favoritism toward the Texas Rangers' Jacob deGrom at -260 odds per FanDuel Sportsbook and rightfully so.
deGrom is in the drivers seat with a 7-2 record 2.24 ERA, and 87 strikeouts to 18 walks over 15 starts. His only metrics that sit around league average, per baseball savant, are the ground ball rate and exit velocity, everything else is considered elite. He's been downright dominant, but will he hold up is the question?

After deGrom's next outing, the 37-year-old will have pitched his most games in a single season since 2019. Only four times in his career has he cracked the 30 start mark and 2019 was the last time that happened.
It's hard to trust that stat, but for most of the players on this list — their bodies betraying them once or twice is the reason why they are in this category as I'd like to say.
One player, that seems to be always injured, but is coming off his second-highest year of games played is Minnesota's Byron Buxton (+430).
That's who I think is the best bet in this field to take down deGrom, not the Tigers' duo of Spencer Torkelson (+900) or Javier Baez (+1000), and certainly not the Angels' Mike Trout (+9000) who I leaned heavily as the frontrunner for this award in the first month of this season.
Last year, Buxton dealt with right knee inflammation in May and right hip inflammation later in the year, yet he still played 102 games, which ranks only behind 140 played in 2017. So the start to this season has been a terrific sign for Buxton, much like deGrom.
Let's travel back in time some more. Buxton set a career-high 28 homers over 92 games in 2022 and appears ready to shatter that this year with 17 dingers through 62 games, which is one less homer through 40 fewer games from last season — in another words, the man is cooking the baseball this season.
Not to mention, he's batting .280, has 47 RBIs with a 2.8 WAR and having his best month of the season in June (.313 BA, 7 HR, 17 RBI). It's hard to ignore Buxton's power, but we also can't ignore the fact that he's been one of the most efficient baserunners with 13 stolen bags to 0 caught stealing, elite batting run value and one of the best hard-hit percentages in baseball.
While Buxton has a habit of chasing and striking out too much (73 Ks to 23 BB), that may be one of the only major negatives to his game so far. He has 46 runs scored and 69 is his career-high, plus he's only gone over 100 hits once in his career (currently at 66 hits in 62 games). He's taking his swings and not worrying about the misses, which speaks to his confidence this season.

There is a lot to like about Buxton at the +430 price and while I see and hear why deGrom should and could win, I will ride with the value on Buxton as he is set to have a career-year as a hitter and could go toe-to-toe at the end of the season versus deGrom for this award.

Wild trade Declan Chisholm to Capitals to move up to fourth round

ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Wild on Saturday traded pending restricted free agent Declan Chisholm and their sixth-round pick (No. 180) for the Washington Capitals' fourth-round pick (No. 123) and the rights to unrestricted free agent defenseman Chase Priskie. The Wild have to decide whether they sign the minor-league defenseman, and with the number of blueliners they currently have in AHL Iowa, it wouldn't be shocking if they walk away and were just doing the Caps a favor by taking one of their 50 max contracts off their hands for a couple of days. Advertisement Chisholm, 25, scored two goals and 10 assists in 66 games last season for the Wild and came in handy when top-four left defensemen Jonas Brodin and Jake Middleton were hurt. In 95 games for the Wild over two years, Chisholm scored five goals and 20 points. The move up to the fourth round gives the Wild three fourth-rounders (Nos. 102, 121 and 123). It'll be interesting to see if the Wild look to add another NHL defenseman in free agency. With Chisholm gone, the Wild are essentially relying on unproven rookies Zeev Buium and David Jiricek to be part of their top seven without a further addition. Chisholm's departure does elevate 2021 first-round pick Carson Lambos on the depth chart. Priskie has played four NHL games, all in 2021-22 with the Florida Panthers. He didn't score. He had 12 goals and 35 points last season for AHL Hershey. (Photo of Declan Chisholm: Steph Chambers / Getty Images)

Angels manager Ron Washington to remain on medical leave for remainder of season

The Los Angeles Angels announced that manager Ron Washington will stay on medical leave for the remainder of the 2025 season with an unspecified medical issue. Washington, 73, has been sidelined for the last week after he experienced shortness of breath at the end of the Angels' series against the New York Yankees that ended on June 19. Following that series, Washington flew back to Southern California and was placed on medical leave after he underwent a series of tests. Washington is currently the oldest manager in MLB. "We're starting to see the personality of the team take the personality of (Ron Washington)," Angels general manager Perry Minasian said in a statement. "There's some resiliency, there's some toughness, and that's exactly what Ron is. "(The players) are going to go out there and play as hard as they play for Ron, day in and day out." Angels bench coach Ray Montgomery, who filled for Washington when he was initially placed on medical leave, was named interim manager. Washington was hired by the Angels prior to the 2024 season, and is 103-140 in 243 games with the team. He was the manager of the Texas Rangers for eight seasons (2007-2014) and had a 664-611 record with them. He led the Rangers to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010 and 2011 before stepping down abruptly in September 2014. The Angels are 40-41 on the season, and have a 7-4 record with Montgomery at the helm. This is Montgomery's first time as an MLB manager in his coaching career. He joined the Angels as their director of player personnel for the 2020 season and became the team's bench coach in 2021. The Angels lost 15-9 to the Washington Nationals on Friday and will look to rebound when they play the Nationals in the second game of their three-game series at 9:38 p.m. ET on Saturday. Anthony Edwards Admits The OKC Thunder Were Too Good

Anthony Edwards Admits The OKC Thunder Were Too Good originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Minnesota Timberwolves had an impressive run to the Western Conference Finals for the second consecutive year in 2025. It was a superb run, but it was ended by the Oklahoma City Thunder, the team that eventually became champions. Advertisement As the Timberwolves' superstar player, Anthony Edwards played under immense pressure. The Thunder honed in on him defensively, which led to him struggling. He tried his best, but the Thunder were too good. Credit: Alonzo Adams-Imagn Images Edwards has taken charge as the Timberwolves' star and leader. He understood that he could play better in the future, which is why he is ready to work hard in the 2025 offseason. The Timberwolves will likely make some big changes, which include retaining players like Julius Randle and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. They already signed Naz Reid to an impressive five-year deal worth $125 million. Every Timberwolves player is pleased with that extension, but they are still reeling from the loss to the Thunder. The Denver Nuggets and Indiana Pacers kept it close, forcing Game 7 in their respective series. However, the Thunder were still superior to them. That is similar to what Edwards and the Timberwolves felt because the Thunder were too much for them. Any player might find it hard to admit, but the Thunder outclassed everyone. "Season five over. Got my a** whooped. KFC, UFC, USC, OKC in five, man. I'm not making excuses. They put belt to a**. I can't be mad at that," Edwards said after Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. "Win or lose, I'm still going to talk s**t. You better win like a boss and lose like a boss... This is the first time in two years when I can work on my game, lock in on that. We're gonna be right back up their a** next year." Advertisement Edwards knows what it would take to beat the Thunder, which will motivate him further. He is locked in on improving his game, which is a big deal because he has always been busy during the offseason playing for Team USA. A Motivated Edwards Spells Trouble For The League Edwards is motivated to lead the Timberwolves again. The two consecutive exits in the Western Conference Finals hurt, but that could be a good sign. The Timberwolves are close to reaching the NBA Finals, where they could compete for the championship. It has been a challenging path to contention, but the Timberwolves have all the tools to return and advance to a bigger stage. Edwards is one of the league's best players, and he is motivated to prove that he and the Timberwolves are the real deal. It will be hard, but players like Edwards thrive when the pressure is high.
