After hitting their season's low point a week ago, the Cleveland Guardians have reversed course in impressive fashion.
With one game remaining before the All-Star break, the Guardians now find themselves trending upward. They'll look to maintain their momentum in the finale of a four-game series against the host Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Cleveland has won five of six following a 10-game losing streak, including a 6-2 victory on Saturday.
After the teams split a doubleheader on Friday, Kyle Manzardo homered and Tanner Bibee earned his first victory since May 22 to help the Guardians secure the win on Saturday.
Cleveland has scored four or more runs in six straight games after batting .166 as a team during its season-long 10-game skid.
'We could be the hottest team in baseball going into the break,' Guardians catcher Austin Hedges said. 'That's what we expect. (We want) to go get a win tomorrow, win the series, and get hot going into the second half.'
Cleveland will send left-hander Joey Cantillo (1-0, 3.79 ERA) to the mound for the series finale. He allowed three runs with a season-high seven strikeouts over four-plus innings in a no-decision against the host Houston Astros last Tuesday.
Cantillo, 25, has given up a total of three runs across 7 1/3 innings in two outings since moving into the starting rotation on July 3.
White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas has struck out in all three of his at-bats against Cantillo, who is 1-0 with 1.00 ERA in nine innings over two career games (one start) versus the White Sox.
Chicago will counter with right-hander Aaron Civale (1-6, 5.17 ERA this season with Brewers and White Sox), who gave up five runs over four innings in a 6-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays last Tuesday.
The 30-year-old Civale has gone 0-4 with a 5.40 ERA across 25 innings in five starts since being acquired from Milwaukee on June 13. He also has 14 strikeouts against 13 walks during that stretch.
'He's a professional,' Chicago manager Will Venable said. 'He's got things he's got to work on, just continue to grind away and search for the best version of him.'
Guardians first baseman Carlos Santana has one hit in 13 at-bats against Civale, who is 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in 11 innings over two career starts versus Cleveland.
Chicago has lost five of its last seven games and was held hitless after the fourth inning on Saturday.
'Credit to their pitchers,' White Sox catcher Kyle Teel said. 'They did a good job, but overall we need to do better as a team. And the beautiful thing about baseball is we have a game tomorrow.'
The Guardians have won nine of their last 10 games against the White Sox, who fell to 32-64 with Saturday's loss.
Cleveland relievers Erik Sabrowski, Cade Smith and Matt Festa combined for 3 1/3 perfect innings on Saturday. Sabrowski struck out all four batters he faced.
'He always has really good metrics on his fastball, but that's the best we've seen his command with it,' Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. 'To face four hitters and punch all four out, it's very impressive -- especially since there were a couple really good right-handed hitters in there.'

MLB-best Tigers limping into All-Star Game break with season-high, 4-game losing streak after sweep

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers were showered with a smattering of boos as they walked off the field for the last time before the All-Star Game. Seattle defeated Detroit 8-4 on Sunday, sealing a three-game sweep that gave the Major League-leading Tigers a season-high, four-game losing streak. 'We've stumbled a little going into the break,' Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty acknowledged. 'But I think if you told everyone in here and in Detroit what record we'd have in the first half, where we would be in the division, where we would be overall and that we would have six All-Stars, I think a lot of people would be happy with that.' The Tigers are 59-38, giving them the best record going into the All-Star Game for the seventh time in team history and first since 2006. Detroit has an 11 1/2-game lead over second-place Minnesota in the Central, giving it the largest lead in the division or league at the break in franchise history. The Tigers will be represented by a team-record six All-Stars: pitchers Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize, outfielders Riley Greene and Javier Baez, second baseman Gleyber Torres and infielder Zach McKinstry. Detroit even had its bat boy, Frankie Boyd, voted into the Midsummer Classic on Tuesday night in Atlanta. 'I want our guys to be proud and also hungry,' manager A.J. Hinch said. The Tigers will definitely want to get a bad taste out of their mouths after giving up 35 runs over three games to the Mariners, who scored 15 runs in the ninth innings of the three games. 'We didn't finish the game, which isn't our norm,' Hinch said. 'We've been very good at playing the entire game.' The Tigers will have 65 games left in the regular season to hold on for their first division title in 11 years and to secure home-field advantage in the playoffs, hoping to win a World Series for the first time since 1984. Ahead of the July 31 trade deadline, general manager Scott Harris may make moves to bolster the bullpen and perhaps the lineup. Detroit will have four days off before resuming play at Texas on Friday night and Hinch is thankful for the timing. 'There's been a lot going on around our team, and after this weekend, we could all use a break,' Hinch said. 'Six guys are going to get a little bit of energy from the big stage of the All-Star Game and the rest of us will get some rest.' ___ AP MLB:

Nationals take high school shortstop Eli Willits, son of ex-MLBer Reggie, with No. 1 pick in draft

ATLANTA (AP) — The Washington Nationals selected Oklahoma high school shortstop Eli Willits on Sunday night with the No. 1 pick in Major League Baseball's amateur draft in a selection seen by some as a surprise. The 17-year-old Willits is the youngest player ever taken No. 1 overall. He's the son of ex-big leaguer Reggie Willits, who played six seasons with the Los Angeles Angels and also coached with the New York Yankees. Willits, from Fort Cobb-Broxton High School, is a switch-hitter who is expected to develop a power swing The draft came one week after the Nationals fired longtime general manager Mike Rizzo and manager Dave Martinez. The timing of the moves added more uncertainty to a draft that might be one of the most unpredictable in recent years, including the choice of the No. 1 pick. One of the top choices for the No. 1 pick was shortstop Ethan Holliday from Stillwater, Oklahoma. Holliday is the son of former Colorado Rockies star Matt Holiday and the younger brother of Baltimore Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday, the 2022 No. 1 overall pick. Ethan and Jackson Holliday would have become the first set of brothers to be drafted with the first pick in the draft. Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred was greeted with boos by fans at the draft held at the Roxy Theater at The Battery, adjacent to the Braves' Truist Park two days before MLB's All-Star Game. Manfred noted the Braves chose eventual Hall of Famer Chipper Jones with the No. 1 overall pick and said this draft is 'a chance for a team to make a franchise-altering selection like the Braves made in 1990.' The first three rounds were scheduled for Sunday night, with the remainder of the draft to follow on Monday. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. ___ AP MLB:

Kyle Stowers hits 3 homers, drives in 6 runs to lead Marlins past the Orioles 11-1

BALTIMORE (AP) — All-Star Kyle Stowers had his first three-homer game and drove in six runs against his former team, leading the Miami Marlins to an 11-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Stowers is the first Marlins player to hit three homers in a game since Brian Anderson on Sept. 18, 2020, in the second game of a doubleheader against Washington. The 27-yeaer-old left fielder also joins fellow Marlins Mike Lowell (2004) and Cody Ross (2006) in accomplishing the feat. Ramón Laureano homered for Baltimore, which has lost consecutive games for the first time since July 1-2. Stowers led off the second inning with a shot to right against Brandon Young (0-4) to open the scoring. An inning later, he sent Young's first-pitch curveball 398 feet for a two-run blast to right-center. In the fifth, Stowers worked a 2-2 count before homering over the scoreboard in right. The 27-year-old had a base hit in the seventh and added an RBI single in the eighth for his first career five-hit game. It was Stowers' fourth multi-homer game of the season. At the break, he has career highs in home runs (19) and RBIs (54). Baltimore selected Stowers in the second round of the 2019 amateur draft. He debuted in 2022, and the Orioles sent him to Miami at last year's trade deadline as part of a package for pitcher Trevor Rogers. Otto Lopez followed Stowers' homer in the third with a solo shot, the second time Miami hit consecutive home runs this season. Miami starter Eury Pérez (3-2) allowed three hits and struck out six in seven shutout innings. Young surrendered a career-high seven runs in 4 1/3 innings. The game was delayed 1 hour, 38 minutes at the start due to rain. Key moment Stowers' third homer made it 7-0 and ended the day for Young, who gave up more home runs (four) than he had in his first five starts combined (three). Key stat Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Stowers is the first player to hit three home runs against Baltimore since Toronto's Bo Bichette in the second game of a doubleheader on Sept. 5, 2022. Up next Miami hosts Kansas City after the All-Star break. RHP Charlie Morton (5-7, 5.18 ERA) starts Friday when Baltimore opens a series at Tampa Bay. ___ AP MLB:
