High Court Stays Release Of 'Udaipur Files', Asks Centre To Take A Call
The film is based on the gruesome murder of tailor Kanhaiya Lal, who was beheaded in Udaipur in 2022 and the petitioners - Maulana Arshad Madani, President of the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind, and journalist Prashant Tondon = had sought a permanent ban on its release, arguing that it promotes hate speech, targets a community and could incite communal tension.
During the over five-hour hearing on Thursday, a division bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Anish Dayal asked the Centre to take a call on the petition and decide, within a week, whether the film should be released.

J&K CM, family urge Centre's help as Niger terrorists abduct Ramban man
J&K CM Omar Abdullah (File photo) JAMMU: J&K CM Omar Abdullah urged Sunday the external affairs ministry (MEA) to intervene urgently in securing the release of Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Ramban district, who was allegedly abducted by terrorists in Niger following an attack on July 15. Abdullah tagged external affairs minister S Jaishankar on X and called for Centre's intervention. Singh, employed as a senior safety officer with M/s Transrail Lighting Limited — a power transmission and distribution firm in Niger — lost contact with his family on July 15, the day terrorists struck the Dosso region, reportedly killing two Indian workers. His wife Sheela Devi, speaking from the family's remote village of Chakka Kundi in Ramban, said she learned about the abduction from one of her husband's friends in Niger after receiving vague responses from his company. 'I kept calling the company, but they said there was no network at the site. No mention of anything serious,' said the mother of three young children. Ranjeet's father Mohan Lal said: 'He was supposed to return in a month or two. We request the PM to help us. He has three small children,' Lal said. Social media users have amplified the family's appeal.

Ex-NRC chief proposes 'family tree' verification for Assam voter roll cleanup
Former National Register of Citizens (NRC) Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma has written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar suggesting that the procedure of verification adopted for NRC may also be tried for creating a "flawless" electoral roll for Assam. It may be mentioned that the family trees of almost all the persons of Assam are available with the NRC authority and the ECI may get hold of it with the permission of the Supreme Court of India." Thanking the ECI for taking up the intensive revision of the electoral roll in Assam following "large scale detection of foreigners' names" in the voter list of Bihar, Sarma wrote, "The situation of Assam is graver than Bihar or any other state of India so far as the electoral roll is concerned." Talking about the unique case of Assam regarding citizenship, the former NRC co-ordinator said, "Unlike the other states, the cut-off date for citizenship in Assam is March 25, 1971, as the East Pakistani nationals entering Assam till 1971 were granted citizenship under 6A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 (amended) and infiltration from Bangladesh is continuing till date." He added, to remedy this, the "Family Tree Matching" was introduced. "In the 'Family Tree Matching' process, all the offspring of a 'Legacy Person' from whom lineage is claimed were asked to submit their family details, which were then compared and matched through a software with the other family trees submitted by descendants of the same legacy person. The mechanism was designed to be such that the 'Family Tree' of the genuine offspring matches with each other. And the 'Family Tree' of the imposters, who attempt to assume descendance through pre-1971 legacy documents as their ancestors, does not match with that of the genuine offspring," Sarma wrote.
