Liam Gallagher in 'freefall' and fleeing to Spain to retire until intervention

Daily Mirror19-06-2025
A new book A Sound So Very Loud reveals how Liam Gallagher was on the verge of moving to Majorca to retire like the gangster played by Ray Winstone in the 2000 movie Sexy Beast - until his partner made him see the light
To borrow a catchphrase from Liam Gallagher, we are all about to witness a comeback of biblical proportions. In exactly two weeks, the Gallagher brothers will take to the stage for the first night of the Oasis reunion.
More than 1.4 million tickets have been sold across 17 UK dates for the tour, 16 years after the Britpop favourites' acrimonious split.

But according to a new book, the reunion might not be happening at all if it wasn't for Liam's fiancee, Debbie Gwyther.

In Ted Kessler and Hamish MacBain's new Oasis book, A Sound So Very Loud, the former recalls meeting Liam in a London pub in 2016, two years after his group Beady Eye disbanded.
And he says we have Debbie to thank for persuading Liam to keep performing. Ted says: 'In the pub, over pints, Liam explained what had been going on for the past two years.
'Since he'd dispensed with the intricate management scaffolding that keeps rock megastars afloat, he'd spent a while in freefall.'
Ted says that just like the gangster played by Ray Winstone in the 2000 movie Sexy Beast, Liam also considered retiring abroad.
He explains: 'He had tumbled out of the bubble to such an extent that for a while, he considered jacking it all in and moving to Majorca, living 'Sexy Beast-style'. Debbie, who had previously worked at Beady Eye's management company, put paid to that.'

The book reveals how Liam listened to Debbie's wise, albeit harsh advice.
Liam explains: 'She just told me to stop being a d**khead. She got me out the house, introduced me to new people outside my world, got me doing new things.'
The book adds: 'She also firmly reminded him that he was the greatest rock 'n' roll frontman of his generation, he was only 43 and there was lots of mileage left on his engine.

'Perhaps he just needed to work with different people – which is exactly what he did, going to LA and collaborating with songwriter-producers Greg Kurstin, Andrew Wyatt and Dan Grech-Marguerat, demoing and recording new songs, some of which Liam played via Debbie's laptop when we were drunk in the pub, miming the words and dancing as I listened through headphones, giving them a thumbs-up.'
Liam, 52, and Debbie, 41, his former personal assistant, got together in 2014 – the year Liam divorced his second wife, former All Saints singer Nicole Appleton.
He was married to actress Patsy Kensit from 1997 to 2000 and has four children – Lennon, 25, with Patsy, Gene, 23 with Nicole, and two daughters, Molly, 27, with singer Lisa Moorish and Gemma, 12, with journalist Liza Ghorbani.

Liam's period of self-doubt came after five years with Beady Eye. The band formed in 2009 and was made up of Liam, former Oasis members Gem Archer and Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock.
They released two albums, Different Gear, Still Speeding in 2011 and BE in 2013 – but neither enjoyed anything like the success of Oasis. Both reached the top 5 in the UK album chart, but they had just one top 40 single with The Roller in 2011.

A Sound Very Loud – dubbed the inside story of every song Oasis every recorded – also details other interactions the authors had with the band.
Ted was with the NME when he went to Camden, North London, with the band in May 1994, three months before Definitely Maybe came out. He took them to famous boozer The Good Mixer, which was often frequented by musicians.
'Liam immediately spied Graham Coxon of Blur at a table and marched up to him, bombarding the introverted guitarist with aggressive bonhomie,' Ted writes. ''You're him out of Blur!' he boomed. 'Good band… sh*** clothes though'.

'They met again at the urinal, where Liam jostled the mid-flow Coxon, splashing his strides.
'An upset Graham complained to the landlord, who foolishly ushered Oasis out forever.'
Later, the Gallaghers and their entourage got into a row at a rock venue with 'several dozen fans of a long-forgotten techno-punk group' who played that night.

Ted writes: 'Confusingly, this dispute became physical and a bundle of goths, record company employees and perhaps some Gallaghers ensued.
'Once more, Oasis were shown the door, bringing the curtain down on our evening tog-ether. So I wombled off into London's orangey black, swaying at the night bus stop at 2am, wondering when the next night out with the Gallaghers might be.'
Last week, Noel, 57, told pals the band sounded good in rehearsals.
He and Liam will walk on stage together for the first time since 2004 on July 4 at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. There will also be dates in Manchester, London and Dublin on the UK leg of the tour.
A Sound So Very Loud: The Inside Story of Every Song Oasis Recorded by Ted Kessler & Hamish MacBain is published by Pan Macmillan on July 3 costing £25 for hardback – ebook and audiobook also available. Preorder book here

PRIMARK is renowned for releasing stylish items that remind shoppers of luxury versions - but with a more purse-friendly price tag. And the high street giant has delivered the goods yet again in the form of a £10 T-shirt. 5 The heavyweight top comes in brown or ivory and features a knot detail across the front. This pretty touch is perfect for flattering mum tums and giving a 'cinched in' appearance. Available in sizes XS to XL, the T-shirt also boasts a gold button across the knot for some added luxury. Staff at Primark's Lincoln store hailed the new summer arrivals as "10/10 no notes" as they shared a clip of them on TikTok. And it looks like fashion fans are in full agreement, as one gushed: "This is cute." "What a slay", insisted another. Meanwhile, a third cried: "We need omg." Savvy shoppers may also notice that the high street giant's T-shirt bears a striking resemblance to a pricier version. The & Other Stories Knot-Detail T-Shirt is also available in white or brown. Designed with a round neck and three-quarter sleeves, they say the knot-detail at the front "creates a cinched waist with decorative gathers". Primark's mini dress is a copy of a £135 designer version - it'll give you a gorgeous hourglass figure & perfect for date night The only difference between the two? A saving of £17. The & Other Stories version is priced at £27 while Primark's dupe will only set you back £10. So if you're on a tight budget then you may want to head down to your nearest Primark. Dupe delight The new £10 tops aren't the only dupes that shoppers are going wild for in Primark. Fashion fans have also spotted £18 summer dresses that are great for looking stylish without breaking your bank account. The retail giant's Textured Button Midi Dress is lightweight with a textured finish and midi length design. It is available in sizes six to 22 and comes in a range of colours and patterns including green and cream striped, blue gingham and red striped. Describing the new frock on their website, Primark bosses say: "Cut a chic figure and get set for the compliments to come rolling in as you rock this elegant textured midi dress. "The midi length is super sophisticated, meanwhile the lightweight fabric is perfect for staying cool on those warm weather days. 5 5 "The striped textured finish lends a stylish look and feel, while the button detailing to the front effortlessly elevates the look. "This piece is finished with lightly puffed sleeves and a form-flattering tie to the waistline." And savvy shoppers may notice that the dress is the perfect dupe for the Starlight Midi Dress, priced at £89, from Nobody's Child. After spotting them in store, fashion fan Chloe said on TikTok: "Nobody's Child dupes in Primark. "I LOVE the style of Nobody's Child dresses, so it was great to see some similar styles in more affordable prices if you also love that style. "I only went in for one thing, but you never leave Primark with just what you went in looking for." Fashion fans are also in a frenzy over Primark's new £6 Zara dupe that's a summer essential, half the price and "so cute". Many of us will own or recognise the iconic Wide Strap Vest Tops from Zara. But now, Primark has released a brand new range of vests that look practically identical. Why Primark is great for looking expensive on a budget By Clemmie Fieldsend, Fabulous Fashion Editor AS someone who's no stranger to grabbing a last-minute outfit from Primark for a night out, it's about time that celebrities started catching on too. For as long as I've been heading out, Primark has been my go-to for those 'I have nothing to wear' moments, rushing in at the last minute to find something perfect. And I'm definitely not alone - on any Friday or Saturday night, you'll find plenty of shoppers doing the same thing, right before closing time. But no matter what, Primark always delivers. Now, Rita Ora is leading the charge, showing that you can snag a designer-worthy look without spending a fortune at high-end stores. While Rita's not rushing in last minute for a red carpet outfit, she's proving you can achieve the same high-impact style for much less. Looking stunning in her tailored suit alongside her mum Vera, Rita fit right in among the other A-listers dripping in Prada, Dior, and Victoria Beckham - if anything, she looked even better than some of the guests at The Fashion Awards. With Myleene Klass and Roxy Horner already jumping on the Primark bandwagon, I'm sure more stars will be following suit soon enough.

Gary Lineker gives verdict on Club World Cup final after FIFA broke their own rules

Former Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has made his feelings clear about the entertainment organised out in the US during half time of the FIFA Club World Cup final between Chelsea and PSG Gary Lineker has admitted to being unimpressed by the glitz and glamour that FIFA attempted to add to the Club World Cup final. There were pre-match and half-time shows as football's global governing body looked to turn their showpiece game into a Super Bowl-style spectacle. ‌ The football remained the main attraction, as Chelsea produced a masterclass performance against Champions League holders PSG to win the Club World Cup. Enzo Maresca's side raced into a surprise 3-0 lead at MetLife Stadium, courtesy of a Cole Palmer brace and a goal from Joao Pedro before the break. ‌ During the interval, the crowd watched on as stars such as Doja Cat and Coldplay lead singer Chris Martin took to the stage. However, the half-time entertainment went well over the regulated 15-minute break and the show did not go down well with Lineker. ‌ The match, which kicked off eight minutes later than scheduled following a pre-game show featuring Robbie Williams, saw FIFA break its own rules regarding the length of half time. As per the seventh statute in the Laws of the Game, the midway interval in a football match should not exceed 15 minutes and only the referee has the power to alter it. The half-time show lasted 24 minutes in total. 'I must say, I don't know about half-time shows,' Lineker said on The Rest is Football podcast. 'It was so far away and also 23 minutes for half-time. I don't know. 'Do we really want to Americanise our sports. I mean, they obviously do that because their sports are not entertaining enough. So hopefully that will not catch on because it's too much, but I'm old school. But they did put on a good show.' ‌ Lineker's podcast partnered with DAZN during the Club World Cup and the former Match of the Day host had media duties during the final. However, the 64-year-old explained that he missed the pre-match entertainment due to the logistics inside the stadium. He had given himself 30 minutes to make it to a DAZN suite, but Lineker still struggled to make it in time. 'We were trying to get up in a lift before the game and there were two or three lifts but there was hundreds and hundreds of people trying to get in them,' Lineker said. ‌ 'And we almost missed kick-off because of the amount of time that we had to wait to get into these lifts. There was no other way of getting up there.' Chelsea celebrated winning the inaugural Club World Cup, defeating teams from the USA, Brazil, Tunisia, Portugal and France on their way to lifting the trophy. However, the drama continued to unfold even after the final whistle had been blown. ‌ A fight broke out between the two sets of players, with PSG boss Luis Enrique finding himself at the centre. The Spanish coach appeared to strike Chelsea striker Pedro in the face, with the Brazil international reeling on the floor. Enrique was pulled away from the confrontation by members of his coaching staff. However, PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was also seen arguing with the opposing side. The row appeared to stem from PSG full-back Achraf Hakimi confronting Pedro and his Chelsea team-mate Andrey Santos. However, their dispute escalated, ensuring that there were some chaotic scenes as the Club World Cup came to a close. Noel Gallagher fans notice same detail at Oasis gigs during UK tour

Oasis fans have been left impressed with the band's live shows in Cardiff and Manchester, with one aspect of the performances in particular being praised by those in attendance Oasis fans have been thrilled by the Gallagher brothers' reunion tour. Noel and Liam Gallagher have received praise for their first joint performance in 16 years after the rock legends kicked off their comeback tour earlier this month in Cardiff before moving on to Heaton Park in Manchester. ‌ The band's live gigs have been a hit with the crowd, with gig-goers noting "one thing" keeps getting better each time the brothers take to the stage. A video clip of the Gallaghers performing together at Heaton Park was posted on the Oasis Reddit page, where it sparked a wave of compliments for the reformed group. ‌ ‌ A fan pointed out that Noel's musical skills appear to be sharpening with every show. "Noel's guitar playing is getting better every night," the fan said, clearly impressed by the older Gallagher brother. "After seeing Anais' [Noel's daughter] Instagram story of her dad playing the Champagne Supernova solo last night, I couldn't help but notice how Noel is seemingly getting better. "Makes a lot of sense, with how little lead guitar he had done since (even before) Oasis originally split up. He definitely seemed a bit out of his element playing solos again, especially at Cardiff night one (makes sense). ‌ "But now he seems to be getting more confident, in his playing and body posture (moving around more), just thought I'd share." Other supporters echoed this sentiment, observing that the High Flying Birds frontman appears to have become much more at ease onstage since Oasis' first gig. One admirer commented: "It's only been three shows and he already seems more confident than the first night in Cardiff." However, not everyone is stunned by Noel Gallagher's showmanship, with one observer highlighting the ease of his guitar solos. ‌ They wrote: "I see comments saying Noel must of have given his blood, sweat and tears for weeks on end in preparation to play these. "I can barely play guitar and can play this stuff so I'm sure the guy who composed them and has played them 1000s of times wouldn't have had too much trouble remembering how they go." ‌ A defender of Gallagher's work replied: "Noel's the first to tell you he's not a good lead guitarist. But it doesn't matter because his solos serve the song." Another fan added: "Correct, but there is a marked difference in his ease and attitude since the start. Of course there would be. The songs aren't incredibly difficult, but the end of the tour I think he'll be flying." Meanwhile an attendee of the first gig in Cardiff suggested the 'Don't Look Back in Anger' craftsman appeared "nervous" during the bands inaugural reunion show. They shared: "The only time I've ever seen Noel look nervous and overwhelmed was on the first night of the reunion."
