Two DWP payments could boost pensioners' incomes by £10,040 a year

Millions of elderly people across the UK could potentially increase their income by over £10,000 annually. A significant number of the 13 million pensioners nationwide may be unaware that they could be eligible for two distinct benefits, collectively amounting to as much as £10,040 throughout the 2025/26 tax year.
One of these benefits is not means-tested and is intended to support older people with long-term health conditions, while the other provides extra financial aid to those on a low income. As highlighted by the Daily Record, Pension Credit aims to help those above State Pension age on a low income by boosting their yearly income by an average of £4,300.
On the other hand, Attendance Allowance or Pension Age Disability Payment (PADP) can provide additional financial support of up to £441.60 each month - totalling approximately £5,740.80 annually. Both these payments are issued separately from the State Pension, which is currently valued at up to £230.25 per week, or £921 every four-week payment period.
The full, New State Pension will be worth £11,973 this year. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates that 760,000 individuals qualify for Pension Credit but are not claiming this income-related benefit.
Similarly, it's estimated that more than one million pensioners are eligible for Attendance Allowance, which is not affected by income or savings, is tax-free and is not considered as income when applying for Pension Credit.
Pensioners in Scotland are now eligible to apply for the Pension Age Disability Payment, which is set to replace the Attendance Allowance in the region. Comprehensive information can be found on MYGOV.SCOT here.
Pension Credit
Currently, Pension Credit is aiding 1.4 million people. It boosts weekly income to a guaranteed minimum of £227.10 for single pensioners or £346.60 for couples.
On average, it equates to £4,300 this year. If you're a single person on the New State Pension with a total weekly income below £227.10, or part of a couple with a combined weekly income less than £346.60, you could qualify for Pension Credit.
Even a modest award of £1 per week can unlock further financial support, such as the Winter Fuel Payment for 2025/26, or the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment in Scotland.
Elderly individuals, or their friends and family, can quickly check eligibility and get an estimate of potential benefits using the online Pension Credit calculator available on GOV.UK here.
Alternatively, pensioners can directly ring the Pension Credit helpline to make a claim on 0800 99 1234 - lines are open from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Attendance Allowance
At present, Attendance Allowance supports nearly 1.7 million elderly individuals across Great Britain, with the additional daily living expenses linked to having a physical or mental health condition, disability or long-term illness. It's important to note that you can apply for this benefit even if you don't have a carer.
Eligible individuals over the State Pension age receive either £73.90 (lower rate) or £110.40 (higher rate) per week through Attendance Allowance. As this benefit is usually paid every four weeks, this amounts to either £295.60 or £441.60 per payment cycle - a total of roughly £5,740.80 throughout the 2025/26 financial year.
If you have a disability or illness and need help or supervision during the day or at certain times during the night - even if you're not currently receiving such assistance - you should consider applying for Attendance Allowance.
This could include:
Help with personal care - such as dressing, eating or drinking, getting in and out of bed, bathing or showering, and using the toilet
Assistance to ensure your safety
You should also consider applying if you struggle with personal tasks, for example, if they take a lot of time, cause discomfort, or require physical support, like leaning on a chair. It's worth noting that Attendance Allowance isn't just for those with a physical disability or illness.
You should also contemplate applying if you necessitate help or supervision throughout the day or night and have:

'Contracts for pals' crisis deepens at Scottish council as two senior figures step aside

South Ayrshire Council faces urgent calls for an inquiry over alleged misconduct by local chiefs following a Sunday Mail investigation. Two senior figures at a local authority have stepped aside amid a widening police probe into contracts for 'pals' allegations. South Ayrshire Council's conservative leader Martin Dowey resigned in April after the Sunday Mail published a recording in which he appeared to offer to help a company with lucrative work. ‌ We can reveal police are now assessing a further recording of the local authority's CEO Mike Newall, who also stepped aside after we received it. ‌ A businessman who claims he is owed more than £400,000 has also now written to the council demanding an inquiry into the scandal is launched immediately. David O'Neil's letter states: 'I am writing to formally raise serious allegations involving misconduct, abuse of position and potential fraud.' In the latest recording to emerge CEO Newall appears to tells a company boss he wants to hand him key work. Newall is heard stating he wants to 'weave a way through all the bureaucracy and procurement stuff so we can make you the preferred bidder so as you get the work'. He added: 'What I have to deal with is a head of legal services who is very risk averse. ‌ 'She says, 'Oh you can't do this and you can't do that.' It's can't, can't, can't.' Newall added: 'I want this to happen.' The audio was recorded at the council's HQ around a year ago and related to a project to redevelop a shopping centre in Ayr town centre. Newall, 63, who earns £135,000 a year, took a leave of absence from his role as CEO citing family reasons days after the Sunday Mail asked for the council to comment on the recording. ‌ Newall can also be heard telling the businessman: 'I'm being candid with you here…we have to be careful what we're saying. 'The bottom line is you're the preferred person to do this but we haven't got any agreements or council approval.' Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Dowey has been reported to police but has insisted no wrongdoing took place and vowed to clear his name. Police confirmed they had 'received additional correspondence which is being assessed.' In a tape, Dowey calls officers at his local authority 'f****** useless' and boasts: 'All the top ones I can sack.' ‌ And he appears to tell the businessman he can help him win work including a deal to demolish Ayr's Station Hotel, which was devastated by fire in 2023. In the recording of a meeting at the council's offices that year Dowey, a former police officer, states: 'You will be told the quotes are coming out. You put in your price, we will give you a guestimate of what is happening. ‌ 'If you are in the last three you will get the quote. You will get it. That's easy, that's not a problem. The problem arises if you are not in the final three, I can't do anything about that. It's up to us getting a proper price from you.' In the wake of our story deputy leader of South Ayrshire Council Bob Pollock was removed in May following an angry meeting. Provost Iain Campbell resigned after admitting he was 'totally disgusted' by the behaviour in the chamber. 'An investigation into the awarding of council contracts is already under way and some of these allegations form part of that investigation.'

Nicola Sturgeon at book festival awarded £300k from taxpayers after hiring her ex-aide

Ex-first minister Sturgeon is promoting her memoir at the Edinburgh International Book Festival which recently appointed her former top aide Liz Lloyd as a director. A book festival featuring Nicola Sturgeon received £300,000 of taxpayer's cash weeks after her ex-chief of staff was appointed as a director. The former first minister is among the headliners at this year's Edinburgh International Book Festival with an event to launch her memoir, Frankly. ‌ It comes as her former top adviser, Liz Lloyd, was hired as a director of the literary event in May. ‌ Last week, John Swinney's government announced a 'one-off' £300,000 lifeline for the festival to continue its long-running schools programme. It comes after the book festival lost its chief sponsor Baillie Gifford last year following a campaign by eco activists over the firm's fossil fuel ties. Lothian Tory MSP Sue Webber said: 'Taxpayers will be asking questions about how the SNP suddenly found this money a matter of weeks after Nicola Sturgeon's most senior former adviser was appointed a director of the festival. 'While the book festival is ultimately crucial for Scotland's culture and Edinburgh's economy, many will be thinking this is not a mere coincidence. The SNP was only scrambling to find this funding because Baillie Gifford was hounded out from its long-held sponsorship by climate activists. 'SNP ministers should come clean on how this funding was awarded and if there was any lobbying from former colleagues who were once at the heart of the nationalist government.' ‌ Lloyd worked for the Scottish Government for nearly a decade as Sturgeon's top aide, working closely with current FM Swinney who was then deputy FM. Lloyd was Sturgeon's chief of staff from 2014 until 2021 then a strategic adviser until the ex-FM quit in 2023, when Lloyd also left her post. The book festival said it would be 'spurious' and 'misleading' to suggest any link between Lloyd's appointment and the announcement of the cash, which it said had been planned for months. The event's government funding has more than doubled in the past year to a record £820,000. Announcing the £300,000 grant on Wednesday, SNP Business Minister Richard Lochhead said it would help schoolkids continue to access free literary events. ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The book festival had previously warned its ability to deliver a successful event had been 'severely compromised' by the ending of its relationship with finance firm Baillie Gifford. The deal was cancelled after activists with the Fossil Free Books campaign targeted book festivals across Britain. ‌ The Scottish Government said: 'The Edinburgh International Book Festival is one the country's most significant cultural institutions. Its schools programme has been crucial in fostering literacy and cultural engagement among young people. 'Supported by the increase in funding for festivals announced in the 2025-26 Scottish Budget, this funding secures those benefits for young readers across Edinburgh, helping schools that might otherwise struggle with travel costs' Glasgow's Aye Write literary festival had to cancel last year's event after its bid for funding from government quango Creative Scotland was turned down. It is set to be revived.
