KLIA Aerotrain returns July 1: Anwar to officiate relaunch, Loke applauds revival
KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 — The KLIA Aerotrain will resume full operations tomorrow at 10am after nearly 28 months of suspension.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is scheduled to officiate the launch at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1).
Bernama reported that the upgraded automated people mover system is part of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd's (MAHB) airport transformation agenda.
'A big thanks to everyone who worked day and night to bring the Aerotrain back,' Transport Minister Anthony Loke said in a Facebook post today.
The Aerotrain, an icon of KLIA since 1998, underwent a RM456 million overhaul to replace its ageing fleet and infrastructure under MAHB's RM742 million Airport Regeneration Plan.
The modernised system now uses Alstom Innovia APM 300R three-car driverless trainsets that can carry up to 270 passengers at speeds of 56 kilometres per hour.
The journey between the main terminal and the satellite building now takes under three minutes.
Each train is equipped with advanced condition monitoring systems to reduce disruptions, improve operational efficiency and enhance passenger safety and comfort.
The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) conducted six months of testing and commissioning for the new system between January and June 2025.
MAHB managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said extensive technical and safety tests were implemented to ensure fault-free operations.
The project, initially targeted for completion in March 2025, faced delays due to global supply chain issues, system integration challenges and the complexity of installing a new driverless system while maintaining airport operations.
KLIA T1 handles over 100,000 passenger movements daily, with the Aerotrain playing a key role in ensuring smooth transfers for international passengers.
The satellite terminal hosts many long-haul carriers, making fast terminal connections essential to reduce missed connections and support seamless travel.
With the Aerotrain back in service, KLIA is positioned to handle growing passenger volumes ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 and the airport's projected return to pre-pandemic traffic levels.

Ringgit strengthens as investor sentiment shifts towards emerging market currencies
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — The ringgit closed higher against the US dollar today, supported by improved sentiment towards emerging market currencies amid a weaker greenback. At 6pm, the local note rose to 4.1995/2005 versus the greenback from Monday's close of 4.2060/2130. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the US dollar's status as a default safe-haven currency is increasingly being reassessed, prompting investors to explore opportunities in regional currencies such as the ringgit. 'The current low-volatility environment is encouraging greater risk appetite, particularly for emerging market currencies. 'Notably, the ringgit, often considered a regional laggard, is breaking through key technical resistance levels despite Malaysia offering comparatively lower yields than some other emerging market peers,' he told Bernama. In our region, the Korean won, Thai baht and ringgit were among the top performers, he added. At the close, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9351/9389 from 2.9156/9206, eased versus the British pound to 5.7797/7866 from 5.7597/7693, and fell against the euro to 4.9566/9625 from 4.9290/9372 yesterday. The local note was traded mixed against its Asean counterparts. It strengthened against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.9/259.4 from 259.0/259.5 and rose against the Philippine peso to 7.45/7.46 from 7.46/7.48 previously. However, it shed vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3015/3059 from 3.2986/3034 and shrank against the Thai baht to 12.9363/9585 from 12.9356/9627 yesterday. — Bernama

TTDI residents raise concern over newly-installed EV chargers taking away public parking space
KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 — The Taman Tun Dr Ismail Residents Association has voiced concern over the recent installation of electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the neighbourhood, saying it takes away already limited public parking spaces. Speaking to Malay Mail, association spokesperson Khairudin Rahim said residents are against the placement of these chargers along Lorong Rahim Kajai 13 and Jalan Tun Mohd Fuad. According to Khairudin, these areas are already overwhelmed by parking shortages and cannot afford to have EV chargers taking away more spaces. 'We are not against EV chargers and welcome the initiative. However, why did the city council allow the installation at the expense of taking away some of the public parking spaces?' said Khairudin. He also pointed out that such initiatives might not be practical for an area like TTDI as most houses with EV cars already have their own chargers at home. 'Some of the private buildings in the area, including the Petronas petrol station, already have EV charger stations to accommodate EV car owners,' he added. The dissatisfaction centres around the fact that the strategic location of these EV chargers further reduces available spots for the general public. The parking bays adjacent to the chargers remain accessible to the public, but it's unclear whether these spaces will soon be reserved exclusively for EVs. Seeking resolution, Khairudin disclosed that the association plans to submit a formal letter to Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur headquarters this week, requesting clarification on the matter. As one of the city's residential hotspots, TTDI residents often complain about parking shortages in the neighbourhood.
