Waymo expands US robotaxi operations, taps Avis for Dallas fleet management

Mint29-07-2025
Alphabet-owned autonomous vehicle firm Waymo has announced plans to launch its robotaxi service in Dallas next year, marking a strategic move to broaden its footprint across the United States. The company will operate in partnership with Avis Budget Group, which will manage fleet operations for the service.
This partnership represents the first time Avis is directly involved in supporting a robotaxi fleet. Under the arrangement, customers will book rides through Waymo's mobile application, while Avis will be responsible for vehicle maintenance, infrastructure, readiness, and depot operations. The companies confirmed that the Dallas project is part of a multi-year agreement, with intentions to extend the collaboration to other US cities over time.
Avis's involvement in robotaxi fleet services positions it as a potential rival to Uber and Lyft, both of which are also investing in autonomous vehicle operations through collaborations with technology partners.
The announcement reflects the complex dynamic between Waymo and Uber, which act as both collaborators and competitors in the autonomous mobility space. Waymo currently operates ride services via its app in Phoenix, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, while also offering rides through Uber's app in Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta. In Austin and Atlanta, Waymo's fleet operations are handled by Avomo, a company backed by Uber. In Miami, where Waymo is set to launch next year, the company will rely on infrastructure support from Moove, another Uber-affiliated fleet manager.
Dallas is expected to become a competitive market for autonomous ridesharing, with both Uber and Lyft planning their own driverless offerings. Uber is working with local startup Avride for a deployment later this year, while Lyft aims to roll out its service in collaboration with Mobileye, an Intel spin-off, in 2026.
Waymo has been steadily expanding its presence in recent months. The firm recently extended its operational area in Austin and has commenced testing in New York City. It has also announced plans to begin trials in Philadelphia, signalling continued growth amid mounting competition, particularly from Tesla, which is also pursuing autonomous ride services.

China's Baidu to deploy robotaxis on rideshare app Lyft

Chinese internet giant Baidu plans to launch its robotaxis on rideshare app Lyft in Germany and Britain in 2026, pending regulatory approval, the two companies said on Monday. Last month, Baidu announced a similar agreement with Uber in Asia and the Middle East as it seeks to take pole position in the competitive autonomous driving field both at home and abroad. Lyft and Baidu said Monday that "in the following years" the fleet of Apollo Go driverless cars will be expanded to thousands of vehicles across Europe. They did not specify which other countries the cars would be deployed in, and it was not clear how long it might take to gain regulatory approval for the initial deployment. Driverless taxis are already on some roads with limited capacity in the United States and China, most notably in the central city of Wuhan, where a fleet of over 500 can be hailed by app in designated areas. Their reach is spreading, with Shanghai's financial district Pudong recently announcing a batch of permits for multiple companies to operate robotaxis. China's tech companies and automakers have poured billions of dollars into self-driving technology in recent years, with intelligent driving the new battleground in the country's cutthroat domestic car market. Baidu is not alone among Chinese companies in searching to expand its foothold abroad. Its rival WeRide is also active in the Gulf region, and in January announced it had been picked to lead a small pilot project in Switzerland. another Chinese company, said in May that it had signed a deal to launch its self-driving taxis on Uber in "a key market in the Middle East later this year". San Francisco-based Lyft in April said it had agreed to buy German taxi app Freenow, planting a flag in the European market. The acquisition marked Lyft's "most significant expansion outside North America", the group said.

Transport staff to go on strike across Karnataka from today

BENGALURU: Buses run by state transport corporations will stay off roads from 6 am on Tuesday, as corporation employees decided to go ahead with their indefinite strike after talks with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah failed on Monday. Though the state government is roping in private vehicles to minimise impact on travellers, the strike will still inconvenience lakhs of commuters as the operation of thousands of state-operated buses across Karnataka and outside will be affected. Though the Karnataka High Court on Monday directed the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of Trade Unions of KSRTC, led by AITUC-affiliated KSRTC Staff and Workers' Federation, to put on hold the proposed indefinite strike from August 5 for a day, the JAC said it received the HC writ petition and order copy only by 7.30 pm and all the members of the JAC were not available for discussion and decision. 'We have submitted the writ petition for legal opinion and will decide on Tuesday. The strike will start as announced,' Federation General Secretary Vijaya Bhaskar said. The JAC, which consists of trade unions of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Western Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and Kalyana Karnataka West Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC), had called for an indefinite strike seeking implementation of many of their demands. The major demands include 25% pay hike with effect from January 1, 2024, settlement of pending salary arrears for 38 months (January 1, 2020, to February 28, 2023) and wage revision. Govt is free to do what it wants: Fed prez On Monday, Siddaramaiah chaired a high-level meeting with Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, federation president HV Anantha Subbarao and JAC representatives at Vidhana Soudha. After the meeting that lasted for almost three hours, Subbarao said, 'Siddaramaiah remained non-committal on the 25% wage hike revision from January 1, 2024. As against the clearance of 38 months' salary arrears, the CM has agreed to pay only 14 months. The stalemate continues and we are going ahead with the strike.'

India's top 1% hold $11.6 trn, park $2.7 trn in active assets

Wealth Composition ♦ India's total estimated household wealth of $19.6 trn ♦ Top-1% earns 40% of all income ♦ 35,000 UHNIs, each with over $12-mn net worth ♦ These households hold $54-mn assets, of which $24 mn are financial ♦ Collectively, Uber Rich command $4.5-trn financial assets, accounting for 70% of India's total financial wealth Mumbai: Just $2.7 trillion out of the $11.6 trillion wealth held by India's richest is parked in actively manageable financial instruments, such as MF, equities, insurance, as per report. A vast majority of India's richest citizens continue to concentrate their wealth in physical assets such as real estate and gold, according to the latest report by global investment research firm Bernstein, as cited by news agency ANI. The report sheds light on the composition of wealth among what it calls the 'Uber Rich', a group that includes Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNI), High Net Worth Individuals (HNI), and the Affluent class. Despite representing only one per cent of Indian households, these high-income groups control nearly 60 per cent of the country's total assets and 70 per cent of all financial assets. This elite segment holds a combined wealth of $11.6 trillion out of India's total estimated household wealth of $19.6 trillion. The Bernstein report notes that just $2.7 trillion of the wealth held by India's richest is parked in actively manageable financial instruments, such as mutual funds, equities, insurance, and deposits. This subset, referred to as the Serviceable Addressable Market (SAM), is what wealth managers typically cater to. The remaining $8.9 trillion is tied up in non-serviceable assets, including physical real estate, gold, unlisted promoter equity, and cash holdings. This lopsided asset distribution underscores the limited penetration of structured wealth management services in the country. Rising Demand for Wealth Managers The findings suggest a massive untapped opportunity for wealth managers and investment advisors in India, especially as the affluent class begins to look beyond traditional investments. Bernstein observes that a significant portion of financial wealth is still unmanaged, even among the richest households. Wealth inequality in India far outpaces income inequality According to the report, The top-1 per cent earns 40 per cent of all income, while the 'Rest of India' holds only a small fraction of both income and assets. This widening gap highlights how wealth inequality in India far outpaces income inequality. Bernstein estimates that India has around 35,000 UHNI households, each with a net worth exceeding $12 million. On average, these households hold $54 million in assets, of which $24 million are financial. Collectively, the Uber Rich command $4.5 trillion in financial assets, accounting for 70 per cent of the nation's total financial wealth. As India's economy expands and formal financial markets deepen, the potential for unlocking this concentrated, under-managed wealth pool could redefine the future of investment advisory services in the country.
