The Hindu04-05-2025
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday (May 4, 2025) addressed the inaugural ceremony of the seventh edition of the Khelo India Youth Games via videoconferencing and officially announced the launch of the event.
The Khelo India Youth Games is being held in Bihar for the first time from May 4 to May 15. Five districts will host the event, including Patna, Nalanda (Rajgir), Gaya, Bhagalpur, and Begusarai.
Over 8,500 players and 1,500 technical staff from all over the country will ensure participation in 28 sports.
Addressing athletes, coaches and staff present at the event, Mr. Modi said players from across the country had gathered, showcasing exceptional talent and determination. He highlighted the athlethes' dedication and hard work, acknowledging their contribution to the sporting spirit of the nation. The PM extended his best wishes to all the players, emphasising that sports in India was now evolving into a distinct cultural identity.
'As India's sporting culture grows, so will the country's soft power on the global stage,' Mr. Modi said, underscoring the significance of the Khelo India Youth Games in providing a major platform for the nation's youth.
He said his Government had always given top priority to sports in its policies. He highlighted that various sporting events under Khelo India, including the University Games, Youth Games, Winter Games, and Para Games, were held nationwide throughout the year at multiple levels.
These consistent competitions, he remarked, boosted the athletes' confidence and brought their talent to the forefront. Citing an example from cricket, the Prime Minister lauded Bihar's own Vaibhav Suryavanshi for his outstanding performance in the IPL (Indian Premier League) at a young age. Mr. Modi emphasised that while Mr. Suryavanshi's hard work was crucial, the exposure to multiple competitions also played a key role in shaping his talent. The more athletes play, the more they thrive, he said.
The PM said the Khelo India Youth Games provided young athletes the opportunity to understand the nuances of national-level sports and gain valuable experience.
Stressing that hosting the Olympics in India had been a long-cherished dream of every citizen, Mr. Modi underlined India's efforts to bring the Olympic Games to the country in 2036.
He said that various initiatives, including Khelo India and the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) scheme, had contributed to building a robust sports ecosystem, benefiting thousands of athletes across Bihar and the rest of the country.
Mr. Modi also acknowledged the growing presence of Indian athletes in new and emerging sports, including wushu, sepak takraw, pencak silat, lawn bowls, and roller skating. He recalled the historic moment when the Indian women's team secured a medal in lawn bowls at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, bringing global recognition to the sport in India.
The Prime Minister highlighted the Government's focus on modernising India's sports infrastructure. The sports budget had increased more than threefold, he said, reaching approximately ₹4,000 crore this year, with a significant portion allocated to infrastructure development.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the establishment of the Khelo India State Centre of Excellence in Rajgir and in other institutions, including the Bihar Sports University and the State Sports Academy.
He remarked that young professionals could explore roles as coaches, fitness trainers, recruitment agents, event managers, sports lawyers, and media experts.
Encouraging the athletes, he urged them to perform at their best and represent the spirit of 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat' as brand ambassadors. He expressed confidence that the athletes would carry fond memories from Bihar. He also encouraged those visiting from outside the State to savour the taste of litti chokha and Bihar's famous makhana.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya were present at the Patliputra Sports Complex, Kankarbagh, where the main inaugural function was organised in Patna.
Famous Bihari folk singer Maithili Thakur enthralled the audience with her singing, and actor Pankaj Tripathi described the glorious past of Bihar via a musical jugalbandi.
Mr. Kumar, while addressing the players, said that it was a matter of great happiness to have the Khelo India Youth Games organised in Bihar this year, and to have its inauguration announced by the Prime Minister.
'I express my gratitude to the Prime Minister for this. I also congratulate and welcome Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya-ji who attended this programme. I also welcome and congratulate the players who have come from every corner of the country to participate in these games,' Mr. Kumar said.

India risks missing U-17 Wrestling World Championships due to delay in visa appointment

India's 47-member wrestling contingent risks missing the U17 World Championship in Athens, beginning on July 28, as the Greek embassy is yet to respond to its visa appointment request. The team is expected to leave on Saturday, July 26. The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had sought an appointment on July 10, but 12 days have passed and it is yet to hear a positive response. When nothing moved six days after its request, the WFI wrote to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on July 16, seeking intervention. The Indian contingent has 30 wrestlers, who made the national team after coming through selection trials conducted by WFI on July 7 and 8 in Delhi and Lucknow, respectively. 'The tickets have been booked and the players are ready. The exposure for young athletes is paramount for their growth. They must not miss the World Championship. It's Tuesday today. Let's hope we get a response now,' he added. 'In the past, we have got visas from Greece's embassy in a matter of four days, but this time, there is an inexplicable delay. Recently, our wrestler Harshita got a Schengen visa from the Hungary embassy in a day. I don't know why the Greece embassy is delaying it this time,' said another WFI official. The travelling squad has several Asian Championship gold medallists in the squad, including Rachna Parmar (43kg), Moni (57kg), Ashvini Vaishno (65kg), and Manisha (69kg) — all being strong medal contenders in Athens. Even the world governing body United World Wrestling (UWW) President Nenad Lalovic has shot a missive to the Hellenic Olympic Committee, requesting urgent intervention in the matter. 'Unfortunately, some of the qualified and registered teams — including the Iranian and Indian delegations — have encountered difficulties and delays in obtaining their Schengen visas,' Lalovic wrote on Sunday. 'Despite having followed the application procedures correctly, these teams have not yet received their visas. I would therefore be most grateful for your support in facilitating this process with the relevant authorities, to ensure that all participating athletes and officials are able to obtain their visas in time,' the letter read. A note on the Greece embassy website reads: 'Kindly be informed that due to the current situation, the processing time of the visa applications is 15 working days, as per instructions of the Greek Embassy in New Delhi, and may be extended.' Kamboj belongs to same variety of pacers as Zaheer Khan and Bumrah: Ashwin

Former India off-spinner R Ashwin believes that the uncapped Anshul Kamboj belongs to the rare breed of fast bowlers like Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah who are not only skillful but have an understanding of plans that goes beyond just trying to "express themselves and enjoy the game". Kamboj was drafted into the Indian squad for the fourth Test against England in Machester after injuries to all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, and the pace duo of Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh last week. "The appreciable thing about Anshul is that he understands the plan. I have seen so many fast bowlers if you ask them about the plan, they just say they want to express themselves and enjoy the game," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "But Anshul understands plans and also knows how to execute in the not a trait many fast bowlers possess. Zaheer Khan was one of them. He was amazing. "In recent times, Jassi (Bumrah) is one player who understands the plans and executes them to perfection. Anshul belongs to that variety. I'm not comparing skills because skills are a very different thing," he added. The 24-year-old impressed in the lead-up to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, performing consistently for India A against the England Lions. Across four innings at Northampton and Canterbury, he picked up five wickets, showcasing late movement and bounce. "He has a very good tappa (right length). I have seen that in the IPL. His wrist position is very good, and he delivers a very upright seam. He never leaves his tappa," he said. "With Bumrah and Siraj there, if you are bringing in Anshul Kamboj into the playing XI, I'm telling you, it's a serious bowling." "Serious bowling attack" Ashwin feels Kamboj, who has been in "cracking form" will serve as the perfect foil to Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the fourth Test. "If you are going to bring Anshul Kamboj into the XI, I am telling you this is a serious bowling attack." He highlighted Kamboj's domestic exploits, which included a 10-wicket haul in an innings against Kerala last year in a Ranji Trophy match at Lahli. "People will say that Anshul will play his first Test. He hasn't played in England, but he was there in the A tour. He has been in cracking form in first-class cricket. He is averaging around 13. He took 10 wickets in an innings," he said.. Ashwin added that Kamboj has the ability to bowl long spells, which will help in England. "Anshul has a habit of bowling long spells. You need that in England. He will be a good foil for Bumrah and Siraj. Prasidh is an option, but I would go for Anshul. We were impressed with him. His wrist is really good," he said. However, Ashwin said that the Indian team management will have to calm Kamboj's nerve should he make his debut. "One thing the management will have to look after is calm Anshul's nerve," he said. India are currently trailing 1-2 in the five-match series with the fourth Test slated to begin in Manchester on Wednesday.

"I'm happy to be back on tour. Small breaks happened here and there. The level of play has gone really high and winning each round is getting tougher by the day." A bronze medallist at the 2023 World Championships, Prannoy struggled for rhythm in the opening game as Watanabe raced ahead with ease. There are a lot of fresh faces and you don't really know what their game is. So, it's tough to be a veteran out there," Prannoy added, underlining the changing landscape of the Lakshya Sen's struggles continued as he bowed out in the opening round after squandering a one-game lead against China's fifth seed Li Shi Feng.
