Indians cancel trips to Turkey, Azerbaijan after countries back Pakistan: Report

Hindustan Times14-05-2025
Indians have cancelled travel plans for Turkey and Azerbaijan in massive numbers, according to online booking platform EaseMyTrip's co-founder Prashant Pitti.
'For Turkey, we have seen cancellations of about 22 per cent, and for Azerbaijan, it is above 30 per cent. Last year, 3.8 lakh people travelled to either Azerbaijan or Turkey from India,' Pitti told News18.

The downturn in travel plans comes days after EaseMyTrip suspended all flight and hotel bookings for Turkey and Azerbaijan amid the country' support for Pakistan while India was engaged in conflict with the country.
In addition to EaseMyTrip, Ixigo CEO Aloke Bajpai had also announced that the platform would suspend all flight and hotel bookings for Turkey, China and Azerbaijan. 'Enough is Enough! Blood and Bookings won't flow together," he said.

Prashant Pitti stated that if one were to consider a modest 60,000-70,000 rupees per passenger spent, it equates to somewhere around 2,500 to 3,000 crores, spent by Indians in these countries.
'Now, this money will probably come back to us in the form of these countries choosing to give their arsenals, their weaponry to Pakistan and hitting back on them, which is why it is important for us Indians to know where to spend our money," he said.

Several traders have also boycotted goods coming from Turkey and Azerbaijan. Turkey and Azerbaijan had issued statements after Operation Sindoor in support of Pakistan. Further, Turkish drones were also reportedly used by Pakistan's army to target India's military bases and civilian areas.
Co-founder Nishant Pitti took to X on Saturday and said, 'Travel is a powerful tool. Let's not use it to empower those who don't stand with us. Last year: 287,000 Indians visited Turkey & 243,000 visited Azerbaijan Tourism drives their economies: Turkey: 12% of GDP | 10% of jobs Azerbaijan: 7.6% of GDP | 10% of jobs.'
"When these nations openly support Pakistan, should we fuel their tourism and their economies? Every rupee we spend abroad is a vote. Let's spend it where our values are respected. Jai Hind," he added.

‘India set to become…': PM Modi after Trump's ‘dead economy' remark

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday indirectly responded to former US President Donald Trump's recent remarks labelling India's economy as 'dead,' asserting that India is poised to become the world's third-largest economy and must remain vigilant in protecting its interests amid global instability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses a public meeting, in Varanasi.(PMO) Addressing a rally in Varanasi, PM Modi stressed the importance of economic self-reliance and reiterated his government's commitment to farmers, small industries, and youth employment. His remarks came just days after Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports and warned of further economic penalties over India's continued trade with Russia. 'There is an atmosphere of global instability. All countries are focusing on their individual interests. India is set to become the third biggest economy in the world, and that is why India will have to stay alert as far as its economic interests are concerned,' the Prime Minister said. While Modi did not mention Trump by name, his comments were seen as a veiled retort to the US President's assertion that India's economy had "tanked" and that it relies heavily on American markets. Underscoring India's economic resilience, Modi called on citizens and the business community to support indigenous production through a renewed commitment to the 'vocal for local' movement. 'We will buy only those things that are made by Indians. We need to become vocal for local,' he urged the crowd, calling for a nationwide resolve to buy and promote 'swadeshi' products. 'Those who want the best for the country and want to see India as the third biggest economy in the world, be it any political party, should leave their differences aside and instil a resolution for 'swadeshi' products,' he added. The Prime Minister further said that the government's highest priority remains ensuring the welfare of farmers, small-scale industries, and employment generation. 'Our farmers, our small-scale industries, the employment for youth — their interest is our top priority. The government is doing everything it can in the best interest of the country. However, there are some responsibilities we have as citizens,' he said. PM Modi also made a direct appeal to India's business community, urging them to prioritize domestic products, especially in light of global disruptions. 'I also want to say to my brothers and sisters in the business community — the world is going through instability, and we should commit to selling only swadeshi goods,' he said. Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for infrastructure projects worth ₹2,200 crore in Varanasi. These included the widening and strengthening of key roads, construction of railway overbridges, and improvements to both rural and urban transportation corridors — part of ongoing efforts to modernize the constituency he has represented since 2014.

Harsh Goenka Slams Hotmail Founder For ‘Lecturing A Billion Indians' From California

Last Updated: Indian-origin Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia had shared a post suggesting that anyone who speaks about issues in India is branded as 'anti-national'. A social media post by Indian-origin Hotmail co-founder Sabeer Bhatia has stirred up strong reactions after billionaire industrialist Harsh Goenka publicly called him out. The exchange unfolded on X where Bhatia's remarks didn't sit well with many, including Goenka. Bhatia shared a post suggesting that anyone who speaks about issues in India is branded as 'anti-national." He listed examples like raising concerns about women's safety, questioning economic claims or pointing out misinformation by leaders 'Say India is unsafe for women – you're anti-national. Question inflated economic numbers – you're anti-national. Call out elected leaders' lies – you're anti-national. Mention lost aircraft – you're anti-national. So if truth = anti-national… then who's a national? The one who lies to you?" Bhatia wrote on X. 'India Doesn't Need Sermons' Responding to this, RPG Group Chairman Goenka reshared Bhatia's post and wrote, 'Living in California and lecturing a billion Indians back home? We live here. We vote, work, pay taxes. We love this country – and we'll fix what's broken. India doesn't need sermons from those who packed up and left." Living in California and lecturing a billion Indians back home?We live here. We vote, work, pay love this country- and we'll fix what's doesn't need sermons from those who packed up and left. — Harsh Goenka (@hvgoenka) August 1, 2025 Mixed Reactions Online Goenka's comment drew attention online and sparked a wide range of responses. Some social media users supported his view. Another said, 'What a great and befitting reply sir. This is our country and no matter how it is we all will fix it for sure." 'Well said Sir… Despite shortcomings we love our country & we strive to overcome them," a person added. However, others defended Bhatia and questioned the backlash. 'Don't we celebrate these same Indians with their achievements in the USA. We are so obsessed that we want to claim Tulsi Gabbard or Sunita Williams even. Why this selective outrage against one individual???" an individual wrote. Someone remarked, 'Someone sitting wherever and having the guts to highlight the problems is much better than someone not having the guts to admit there is any problem." 'To fix what is broken you need to first accept & realise it," read another comment. Following Goenka's remark and the online buzz that followed, Bhatia responded. 'I've been hearing that sob story for more than 30 years now. It's only getting worse because we have fantastic lecturers and no doers. Lots of Chiefs and no Indians…," he wrote. Lots of Chiefs and no Indians…— Sabeer Bhatia (@sabeer) August 1, 2025 Not The First Time Bhatia Has Faced Criticism This isn't the first time Bhatia's comments have led to controversy. Back in May, he had posted on social media questioning whether the benefits of India's economic rise were reaching ordinary citizens. This came shortly after India overtook Japan to become the world's fourth-largest economy. His remarks back then were met with strong pushback too. Among those who responded sharply was former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai who criticised Bhatia for commenting on India's progress despite living abroad. Pai questioned Bhatia's connection to India's growth and accused him of spreading negativity. Russian Media Says ‘Indian Govt Did Not Ask Refineries To Stop Buying Oil From Moscow'

Last Updated: After Trump claimed India might have stopped buying Russian oil, reports have surfaced, claiming that New Delhi has not issued any such instructions to refineries. Amid Donald Trump's criticism of New Delhi's energy ties with Moscow, the Russian media reported that the Government of India has not issued any instructions to refineries in the country to stop their purchase of oil from Russia or explore other suppliers. 'The government did not ask refineries to stop buying Russian oil," news agency TASS reported, citing a governmental source. 'No instructions were also given regarding oil imports from other sources instead of Russia," the source added. Earlier in the day, news agency ANI reported, citing sources, that the Indian oil refiners continue to source oil from Russian suppliers. 'Their supply decisions are guided by price, grade of crude, inventories, logistics, and other economic factors," sources told ANI. The latest developments come as US President Trump said on Friday (local time) that he had 'heard" India was going to stop buying oil from Russia, describing the reported move as 'a good step". However, he added that he was unaware if it was true. 'I understand that India is no longer going to be buying oil from Russia. That's what I heard, I don't know if that's right or not. That is a good step. We will see what happens," Trump told reporters.
