T.N. government opposes Hindu Munnani's Lord Murugan conference in Madurai; cites Bengaluru stampede

The Hindu10-06-2025
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday (June 9, 2025) opposed the Hindu Munnani's plea for extended pre-event celebrations ahead of the Murugan devotee conference in Madurai, informing the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court that it apprehended potential law and order issues and 'a situation like the recent stampede in Bengaluru'.
Hence, it was willing to grant permission for only three days to the outfit for installing temporary miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at the 'Muruga Bakthargalin Aanmeega Maanadu'.
The Hindu Munnani, represented by State secretary S. Muthukumar, had filed a petition before the High Court seeking a direction to the police to grant permission for installing miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at Amma Thidal near the Vandiyur toll gate and conducting pujas.
The petitioner said the Hindu Munnani had decided to arrange a gathering of devotees of Lord Murugan on June 22. The miniatures of 'Arupadai Veedugal' were planned to be installed at the venue from June 10 to June 22. Pujas would be performed and prasadam would be distributed to the devotees, he said, adding that the Sthalapuranam of the six abodes would be displayed and devotees would chant Kanda Shashti Kavacham and Thiruppugazh. Spiritual and cultural programmes would be held at the venue, which is a private land, and the land owner had given his consent, he said.
A representation was made to the Madurai City Police for permission to use sound amplifiers at the event. A representation was also made for arranging darshan of the miniatures from June 10 to June 22. The police rejected permission for using microphone sets and installing miniatures and temporary models, the petitioner said. He alleged that a police team went to the place where the miniatures were being made and threatened workers and volunteers not to proceed with the work.
He sought a direction to the police to grant permission for installing the miniatures of the six abodes of Lord Murugan at the venue and conducting the pujas.
The government told the court that the Hindu Munnani had not responded to all the questions put forth by the police. The organisation, however, submitted that it had done so. Justice B. Pugalendhi directed the Hindu Munnani to furnish its response to the questions and the police to take a decision by June 12. The court permitted the petitioner to proceed with making the miniatures. However, no puja shall be conducted for now, the court said. It posted the matter for hearing on June 13.

‘Not feasible': Madras HC dismisses plea to conduct excavation at Maruthur dam

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court recently dismissed a PIL seeking direction to conduct archaeological excavations at the Maruthur dam in Srivaikundam taluk in Thoothukudi, after the court was informed that it was not feasible. The litigant S Kamaraj alias Muthanlankurichi Kamaraj stated in his petition that Maruthur dam was constructed 1,500 years ago on the rubble of an ancient temple built by a Pandya king. Citing that there were stone inscriptions in the dam, the origins of which can be traced back to the 13th century, Kamaraj requested the court to direct the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the state archaeology department to conduct excavations at the dam using scientific methods and publish a report of the findings. The government counsel, representing the archaeology department, submitted a report stating that the inspection was conducted by the officials of the department, and it was found that the subject site was not feasible for excavation. The case was heard by a bench of justices S M Subramaniam and A D Maria Clete. They observed that no further adjudication is necessary in the petition and dismissed the case.

Madras HC: Remand orders against BJP lawyers' wing secy illegal

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has held illegal the remand orders issued by the respective judicial magistrates in Coimbatore and Thirukazhukundram against advocate D Alexis Sudhakar, the state secretary of BJP's lawyers wing. Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan passed the orders recently on the criminal revision petitions filed by Sudhakar who was arrested on the charges of possession of weapons and cheating. Senior counsel Abudu Kumar Rajaratnam, appearing for Sudhakar, submitted that he was falsely implicated in a series of criminal cases by the police out of political vendetta and was arrested last year. The remand orders issued by the judicial magistrates were arbitrary and in violation of Article 22 (1) of the Constitution which guarantees the right to be informed of the grounds of arrest and the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of one's choice. He also submitted that mandatory statutory safeguards including service of ground and reasons of arrest and intimation to family members were disregarded by the police officers while arresting Sudhakar. Justice Ilanthiraiyan held that a perusal of the arrest memo reveals the ground arrest and reasons for arrest were not stated. That apart, there is no record to show the petitioner's family was informed of the arrest. The non-compliance of the mandatory provisions is a clear violation, the judge said in the order. He held the remand itself is illegal when the petitioner was not informed of the reasons and the grounds for the arrest.

Non-bailable warrants issue: 73K cases pending, Madras HC appoints nodal officer

CHENNAI: Expressing concern over thousands of cases pending in courts for decades across the state due to issues in executing non-bailable warrants (NBWs), the Madras High Court has directed subordinate courts and the Director General of Police (DGP) to strictly follow the orders and guidelines of the Supreme Court in this regard. Citing the report filed by the Registrar General, the judge said 73,699 cases are pending at the stage of execution of NBWs from 1985 to June 2025 across the courts in Tamil Nadu. Commenting that pendency of warrants from 1985 'reflects a breakdown of the system', Justice P Velmurugan appointed R Mahesh Babu, a retired chief administrative officer of district judiciary, as the nodal officer to review the situation in subordinate courts and submit reports. File action taken report in 3 months: Judge to DGP The judge, in the order passed on Friday while disposing of a batch of petitions seeking directions to the police to execute NBWs against accused persons and subordinate courts to take charge sheets on file, also told the DGP to file an action taken report in three months.
