Called 2021 top ranking ‘fake', AAP now celebrates NAS-2024 success
2
Jalandhar: Three years after dismissing Punjab's number one rank in the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 as "fudged" and "fake," the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) govt is now celebrating the state's top performance in NAS 2024 with much fanfare.
Chief minister
Bhagwant Mann
, AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and senior party functionaries highlighted Punjab's achievement at a special event held in Sangrur on July 6. They credited the success to sustained efforts in improving school education and lauded the role of govt schoolteachers.
While the party's social media platforms and speeches referenced Punjab's low 29th rank in NAS 2017 to showcase the improvement, they skipped any mention of NAS 2021— when Punjab also topped the rankings.
In NAS 2021, Punjab had ranked first across all subjects in classes III, V and VIII. For Class X, it secured the top three positions in five subjects, topping in mathematics, second in three others, and third in English, behind Chandigarh and Goa.
As the results came out in the last week of May 2022, initially, there was no reaction from the ruling party, even as the opposition leaders congratulated the teachers and students and also questioned the state govt's silence.

They took digs at AAP, stating that it promoted the 'Delhi model' in Punjab elections, but the national capital's schools lagged behind in the survey in all the classes.
Eventually, then education minister and current Sangrur MP Meet Hayer broke his silence, claiming that the 2021 results were based on "fudged data". The remark drew strong criticism from opposition parties and netizens, who questioned how the figures could be fudged when the test was conducted by the Central Bureau of School Education (CBSE).
A month later, in the last week of June 2022, even CM Mann remarked in the state assembly that it was a fake number one ranking and his govt would show how to make them real number one.
Prior to NAS 2021, Punjab had topped the Performance Grading Index (PGI) for 2019–20, released in June 2021. AAP had mocked the ranking, with then Delhi deputy CM Manish Sisodia alleging that the achievement was due to a "secret friendship" between then Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Punjab had climbed steadily in the PGI rankings: from 22nd place in 2017–18, to 13th in 2018–19, and finally to the top spot in 2019–20, largely credited to education reforms initiated under the leadership of then education secretary Krishan Kumar and backed by CM Amarinder.
The next year, in NAS 2021, the state was at the top position. Punjab was again among the top performers in the PG Index 2020-21, the report of which was released in 2022, and AAP stayed silent.
After the PG Index report 2021-22 was released in 2023, in which Punjab was at number two in overall performance with 647.4 scores, while Chandigarh was at the top with 659 scores, it was for the first time in Nov 2023 that the AAP govt acknowledged the state's consistent performance in the school education sector, which started before it came to power. At that time, AAP posted on its X handle, "Punjab retains its top position in PG Index report," and mentioned 'Sikhiya Kranti' and the budgetary provisions for different tasks pertaining to school education and other efforts.
For the fifth consecutive year, Punjab was at the top among the states in the PG Index 2.0 for 2022-23 and 2023-24, released by the Union ministry of education last month. UT Chandigarh was at the top for 2022-23 and 2023-24.

Shocking poll shows majority of Canadians now see America as a threat
More Canadians than ever before now view the United States as a top threat to their country, even as many still consider it Canada 's most important ally. A new global survey by the Pew Research Center shows 59 percent of Canadians believe the US poses a threat, up sharply from just 20 percent in 2019. At the same time, 55 percent still call the US their closest ally, highlighting the complicated emotions many Canadians feel about their powerful neighbor to the south. 'Canada stands out. The change in views toward the US here has been significant,' said Janell Fetterolf, senior researcher at Pew. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Build Your Dream Villa Near Bengaluru Airport Sumadhura Group Learn More Undo With US President Donald Trump pushing new tariffs and hinting at annexation rhetoric, even suggesting Canada could become a US state, Canadians are feeling uneasy. He imposed steel and aluminum tariffs tied to fentanyl trafficking concerns in March, then rolled them back days later for goods meeting the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) terms. He also floated massive tariffs on copper (50 percent) and pharmaceuticals (200 percent). A July 21 deadline looms for finalizing a new Canada-US economic and security agreement. Punjabi edition of ‘Kejriwal Model' book launched in Mohali
'I witnessed a unique model taking shape, one that focuses on world-class government schools, schools of excellence, free and quality healthcare, 24×7 free electricity, and a corruption-free environment,' Shah said. Speaking at the event, Shah shared his motivation for documenting the 'Kejriwal Model' — a governance framework, which he said had 'transformed' the way politics and administration are practised in India. Chandigarh, Jul 8 (PTI) The Punjabi edition of the book 'Kejriwal Model' book, authored by AAP leader Jasmine Shah, was launched in Mohali on Tuesday by party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, and senior leader Manish Sisodia. Kejriwal spoke of his early days, starting from the anti-corruption NGO 'Parivartan' in 2000 to the Anna Hazare movement, and eventually the formation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). 'On 26 November 2012, we applied to register AAP. Everyone from the media to intellectuals said we'd lose our deposits in every seat. But in December 2013, we won 28 seats in Delhi,' Kejriwal recalled. The AAP leader emphasised that the 'Kejriwal Model' was not conceived in boardrooms, but shaped by experiences gained while living and working in Delhi's slums for a decade. Kejriwal shared how his early days of activism, including a hunger strike and reconnecting electricity lines, stemmed from the public outrage at unaffordable bills and poor services. Kejriwal underscored that this model can only run on honesty. 'If a government is corrupt, if its ministers are looting, this model will collapse,' he said, stating that AAP has proven this in Punjab as well. 'Previous governments claimed the treasury was empty. But we fixed schools, and hospitals, and gave free electricity because we curbed corruption and saved public money,' he said. He criticised the BJP government in Delhi, alleging that after AAP left office, services have 'collapsed'. 'Mohalla Clinics are being shut down, free medicines and tests have been discontinued, the roads are broken, and six-hour power cuts are back. They're not here to serve but to profit,' he said. Kejriwal said he is willing to help other states fix their governance, even offering to send Manish Sisodia to train their teams. 'Sadly, they don't want to work,' he stated. Mann praised Kejriwal for shifting the political discourse from issues of caste and religion to development. Mann said people were earlier unaware of what governments could do for them, but that is not the case anymore due to the 'Kejriwal Model'.
