Optimus Energy Launches emsys VPP-powered Virtual Power Plant to Trade Renewable Energy in Greece

OLDENBURG, LOWER SAXONY, GERMANY, April 9, 2025 / EINPresswire.com / -- Optimus Energy has contracted the German service provider emsys VPP to supply its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) for trading renewable energy in Greece's wholesale electricity and balancing market. With a portfolio of nearly 4 GW of solar and wind power, Optimus Energy holds a leading market position in Greece, representing 50 % of the renewable energy capacity traded under the Feed-in Premium (FiP) scheme or through direct merchant participation, nationally . The collaboration enables Optimus Energy to leverage a proven Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution, widely used by aggregators and utilities across Europe, to maximize the value of their renewable energy portfolios in short-term energy markets.
emsys VPP has already commenced setting up its Virtual Power Plant for the wholesale electricity market and is customizing the software to meet Optimus Energy's specific requirements. This process includes connecting over 3,500 solar and wind power plants to the VPP, enabling real-time data retrieval and dynamic control of variable electricity production. Contracted by Optimus Energy, emsys VPP's partner company, energy & meteo systems, provides accurate solar and wind power forecasts for the connected assets, which will be integrated into the VPP. This complete software suite allows Optimus Energy to efficiently manage its portfolio including reduction of power generation during periods of negative electricity prices.
Additionally, emsys VPP is supplying a tailored Virtual Power Plant for providing balancing energy services, a strategic expansion of Optimus Energy's services in the evolving Greek energy market, driven by the constantly increasing penetration of renewable energy sources (RES). Balancing services will benefit both the renewable assets, by creating an additional revenue stream, and the grid, by delivering greater flexibility in line with energy transition objectives. As part of the service, emsys VPP will enable the qualification of renewable assets for participation in the balancing services market. This qualification process includes remote-control tests to ensure that renewable plants connected to the VPP comply immediately with dispatch instructions from IPTO, the Greek transmission system operator.
'Our collaboration with emsys VPP leverages their industry-leading software solutions and extensive international expertise, which are instrumental in optimizing the market potential of our RES portfolio,' says Stella Zacharia, CEO of Optimus Energy. 'We're excited to play a pivotal role in enhancing power system stability in Greece, while also accessing the emerging ancillary services market as a valuable additional revenue stream for our expanding renewable energy portfolio.'
'Our Virtual Power Plant and power forecasts already support several Greek partners in managing their renewable energy portfolios. Providing our Virtual Power Plant for the wholesale and ancillary services market to Optimus Energy marks a significant milestone in bolstering our market presence,' says Dr. Ulrich Focken, Managing Director of emsys VPP and energy & meteo systems.

Kenneth Norgan, stalwart patron of Harris Theater, dies

Chicago businessman and philanthropist Kenneth Norgan was on the board of several local institutions including the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, where he was the founding sponsor of the 'Beyond the Aria' series. 'Ken's 10-year commitment to underwriting our premier series, 'Beyond the Aria,' was legendary … raising awareness of opera and classical music while building relationships one by one,' said Harris Theater co-founder Abby McCormick O'Neil. 'We bonded over the years as friends who both loved the mission of the theater and everything it was trying to do to capture and build an audience.' Norgan, 82, died of complications of a pulmonary embolism on June 9 at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said Matt Olaveson, a longtime friend and fellow Swedish American Museum board member. A Streeterville resident, Norgan previously had lived in Lake Forest. Born in the North Side Lincoln Park neighborhood, Norgan grew up in Lincolnwood and was the son and grandson of the owners of the Norgan Pontiac auto dealership on the Northwest Side. When he was a teenager, his parents agreed to invest in a new fast-food business founded by their friend Ray Kroc, and in short order, Norgan was working at the first franchised McDonald's restaurants that his family bought, in Glenview and Libertyville. After receiving bachelor's and master's degrees in linguistics from the University of Michigan, Norgan taught German at Maine South High School in Park Ridge until 1971, when he rejoined his family's business. Ultimately, he owned and oversaw 13 McDonald's franchise restaurants in the northern suburbs. Norgan was a founding member of Ronald McDonald House Charities, an organization that provides housing for the families of hospitalized children. In 2010, Norgan was a co-chair of a campaign to build the 80-room, 16-story Ronald McDonald House at 211 E. Grand Ave. in Streeterville, near Lurie Children's Hospital. The $40 million facility opened in 2012. Norgan also was a longtime board member and a former board chair for the Harris Theater, which in November 2003 opened a nearly 1,500-seat theater in Millennium Park that offers a performing space for small and medium-sized music and dance organizations. 'His passion for music and dance was unwavering,' said Michael Tiknis, the Harris Theater's former president and managing director. 'He was always either at a performance or on his way to one.' Tiknis recalled traveling with Norgan to Hamburg, Germany, to see the Hamburg Ballet as part of the preparation to bring that troupe to the Harris. Harris Theater President and CEO Lori Dimun said Norgan's devotion to the theater was 'beautifully expressed' through his role as the founding supporter of the 'Beyond the Aria' series, which was launched during the 2014-15 season. The series brings together stars from the Lyric Opera of Chicago and emerging artists from the Ryan Opera Center. ''Beyond the Aria' reflected everything Ken loved — artistic excellence, intimate connection between performers and audience, and the joy of experiencing something deeply personal and movingly,' Dimun said. 'Many of our longtime subscribers were introduced to 'Beyond the Aria' because Ken invited them. He didn't just support the series — he built a beautiful community around it.' Dimun also highlighted Norgan's work in developing the Harris Theater's partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities, which, she said, 'became a cornerstone of our community engagement work.' O'Neil noted that Norgan always tried to avoid the spotlight when marking milestones in the Harris Theater's history. 'He never wanted the attention or the spotlight and actually was quite shy. As a result, we became a bit of a comic routine — I always wanted him at the podium with me and egged him on to speak,' O'Neil said. 'In keeping with who he was, Ken with a smile on his face would say as little as possible when I would ask him to speak. Over the years, we made donors laugh with our routine that just organically grew out of my determination to make him say something and his resolve to be as silent as possible.' Norgan also served on the boards of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and the Ryan Opera Center. Proud of his Swedish heritage, he also served on the boards of the Swedish American Museum and the foundation board of Swedish Covenant Hospital. 'Ken got involved with the Swedish American Museum on many levels,' said the museum's co-founder and former executive director, Kerstin Lane. 'Ken was a gentle soul with much to give to this world.' Norgan also had a home in southwest Michigan for many years. Norgan is survived by his partner of 28 years, Jose 'Pepe' Conforme; and a brother, William. A memorial service will take place on Sunday, July 27, at the Harris Theater, 205 E. Randolph St., Chicago.

HSBC's Arm to Exit German Custody Business Under Simplification Plan

HSBC Holdings Plc's HSBC subsidiary, HSBC Continental Europe, has reached an agreement to sell its custody operations in Germany to BNP Paribas BNPQY. This potential transaction marks another milestone in HSBC's ongoing simplification strategy for refocusing on being the leading corporate and institutional bank in Germany and Europe for its international clients. HSBC's custody business in Germany focuses on domestic custody, clearing and depository services for German institutional clients. Although the financial terms of the agreement remain undisclosed, the deal will involve the complete transfer of HSBC Continental Europe's custody operations in Germany, including all assets and its related clients, to BNP Paribas. The transaction is expected to undergo a phased execution of the transfer of staff and clients starting in early 2026. Further, the completion of the potential transaction is subject to regulatory approval and antitrust approvals and the conclusion of negotiations with the Works Council in Germany. Post-transaction, both HSBC and BNP Paribas are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for clients and colleagues. The decision to divest the custody unit in Germany is in line with HSBC's October 2024 simplification strategy. The company is realigning its business segments as part of this effort. In sync with this, HSBC is winding down investment banking activities across the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States and divestitures of its French life insurance arm, HSBC Assurances Vie (France), and private banking business in Germany. It also announced the sale of its business in South Africa. In March 2025, its U.K. division, HSBC UK Bank plc, announced the sale of its U.K. private client trust business to Ludlow Trust. In February 2025, HSBC Bank Middle East, Bahrain branch, entered into a binding agreement to transfer its retail banking business in Bahrain to Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait B.S.C., one of the largest retail and commercial banks in Bahrain. In the past couple of years, HSBC has completed the sale of its businesses in the United States, Canada, New Zealand, Greece, Russia, Argentina and Armenia, as well as the retail banking operations in France and Mauritius. Driven by these efforts, HSBC aims to achieve $1.5 billion in annualized savings by the end of 2026. To implement the plan, HSBC will likely incur nearly $1.8 billion in total severance and other upfront charges by the end of 2026. The bank also intends to reallocate an additional nearly $1.5 billion of costs from non-strategic activities to priority growth areas over the medium term. Over the past year, shares of HSBC have rallied 38.2%, outperforming the industry's growth of 32.2%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Currently, HSBC carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). In June 2025, Huntington Bancshares HBAN announced its decision to streamline operations by divesting the corporate trust and institutional custody business of its subsidiary, The Huntington National Bank (Huntington), to Argent Institutional Trust Company ('AITC'). This strategic move reinforces the company's commitment to enhancing its core financial offerings, positioning itself for greater efficiency and long-term profitability. Post-transaction, AITC and Huntington will maintain a strategic relationship, with Argent continuing to provide corporate trust, escrow, and custody solutions to Huntington's commercial banking clients. In March 2025, State Street Corp. STT agreed to acquire global custody and related businesses outside of Japan from Mizuho Financial Group, Inc. These businesses aid the international investments of Mizuho's Japanese clients. Following the completion of the deal, STT will partner with Mizuho Financial Group to support its Japanese clients with global custody and related services. Self-made billionaire John Calamos says young people need to hustle — and have a mission in life — to be successful

John Calamos says young people need to work hard to succeed, but it's OK to change course in life. The billionaire investor and former Air Force pilot shared his advice for young people with BI. Calamos said that having a mission in life is vital, and wealth often comes as you work toward it. Self-made billionaire John Calamos says the road to success can be steep and winding, and wealthy parents should teach their kids that finding meaning in life trumps money. Calamos, 84, grew up in an apartment above his Greek-American family's grocery store, where he started working at a young age. He piloted jets during the Vietnam War before building his business empire. He's the founder of Calamos Investments, which manages assets worth more than $40 billion. Calamos, who published a biography, "The Sky's the Limit," in April, shared his advice for young people and parents with Business Insider. Calamos joined the military after taking to heart President John F. Kennedy's appeal for people to "ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." The convertible-bond pioneer has a similar message for graduates: "You don't get out of school now and say, 'OK, what is the government going to give me?'" he said. "It's not what the government's going to give you, it's what you can do." Calamos said that he was able to become wealthy despite modest beginnings by being "creative, innovative." Being determined and having goals are key to achieving great things, he added. In his book, he writes that young people shouldn't bow to pressure to specialize early, as he found value in a "more winding path." Calamos started off as an engineering student, studied philosophy, switched to architecture, graduated with a degree in economics, then later earned an MBA. "It's OK to change course as you learn more about yourself — what you truly care about and what ignites your passion," he writes. Calamos added that it's crucial to keep learning, stay curious, and look for better ways to do things at every stage of one's career. "This focus on continual improvement, innovation, and learning has been key to my own success," he writes. Calamos shared one of his biggest takeaways from his childhood and suggested how affluent parents might avoid raising entitled children. "What I learned from my parents was just a work ethic," he told BI. "They worked hard all the time." Calamos began working from a young age, first stocking shelves in his family's store, later delivering groceries and newspapers, washing windows, and more. A parent's job isn't to simply hand money to their children, it's to instill in them the values of hard work and perseverance, he added. He said that the message should be, "It's not about the money, it's about the mission — the money is a byproduct." Read the original article on Business Insider
