Earlier today, Chelsea were convincingly beaten 4-1 at Stamford Bridge by Barcelona - surrendering to an 8-2 defeat on aggregrate - as their dreams of becoming the first English team to win European honours since Arsenal in 2007 were well and truly crushed. A lot of food for Chelsea manager Sonia Bompastor, Emma Hayes' successor, who was ultimately recruited by the club to win the competition.

A full circle manager moment
Joe Montemurro, the Lyon manager who was at the helm of Arsenal for five years from 2017-2021, mentored Renee Slegers on a UEFA coaching programme.
I actively asked for him as my mentor because I heard a lot of good things about his leadership, his football philosophy and how he is as a person,' said Slegers, speaking earlier this week.
It was great working with him. I learnt a lot of things. I was visiting him here at Arsenal when he was working here.
I know Joe and he knows me and he knows the club and the players as well. Of course, a lot of things have changed since he left. It's going to be a great encounter and I look forward to seeing him tomorrow.'

Can Arsenal draw on recent history?
Lyon are a side who don't lose many games, but they came unstuck against the Gunners in 2022 in their own back yard when they were outclassed by the London club in the group stages under former manager Jonas Eidevall, in one of their greatest ever European performances. Caitlin Foord, Frida Maanum and Beth Mead, who all started for Slegers last week Saturday, were on the score sheet. Against Lyon at the Emirates last Saturday, they put 25 crosses into the penalty area but failed to make use of them. Today they'll have to deal with the added aerial threat of Renard, too, so the job doesn't get any easier.

Can Arsenal stage a comeback?
Lyon, a powerhouse of women's European football, have only been knocked out of the competition twice in 15 years after winning the first leg in the knockout stage - so the probability gods are firmly against Arsenal. Although, on those occasions, it was to the old away goals rule, which no longer applies. A reminder that Arsenal haven't reached the Champions League final since the year the club won the competition in 2007, when it was known as the Uefa Cup. Karen Carney, who is in the TNT Sports studio on punditry duties for today's match, was part of that Gunners side.

The Gunners are trailing 2-1 to the French giants and eight-time European champions after slipping to defeat in the first leg, so Renee Sleger's side need to deliver a clinical performance this evening if they are to have a chance of progressing to the final.

Everton close in on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall as summer investment continues
Everton are progressing in their attempts to sign Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in a £25m deal. David Moyes is making headway in his chase for a fifth summer signing, while Chelsea are willing to let Dewsbury-Hall leave after a solitary season at Stamford Bridge. The 26-year-old, who excelled for Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca as Leicester won promotion, only started two Premier League games last season following his £30m move. And Everton are seeking to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Abdoulaye Doucoure and on-loan Orel Mangala. Chelsea have spent about £250m this summer and brought in about £135m but they could recoup more money by selling Armando Broja and Lesley Ugochukwu, both to Burnley. Everton are also interested in Southampton's Tyler Dibling. Lyon's Malick Fofana is another player they have considered in a bid to bring in someone who can play on the right flank after the summer departures of loanees Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom. Moyes, who had said he wanted five or six more signings this summer, expressed confidence after the 2-2 draw with Manchester United in Atlanta that Everton were getting closer to new signings. The Scot has already signed striker Thierno Barry, midfielder Charly Alcaraz, defender Adam Aznou and goalkeeper Mark Travers this summer and a move for Dewsbury-Hall would take his spending past £75m.
