Italy players caught laughing at Chloe Kelly moments before England equaliser

Metro2 days ago
Smirking Italy defender Boattin was left with egg on her face after being caught mocking Chloe Kelly moments before England's dramatic stoppage time equaliser.
Still trailing to Barbara Bonansea's first half goal, the Lionesses appeared destined for an agonising exit when Kelly placed the ball in the corner quadrant with three minutes of injury time remaining.
The England super-sub, who had earlier come close to scoring directly from a corner, miscued her attempted cross and it dribbled tamely into the side netting.
At that moment, Italy's players and coaching staff must've thought their place in the final was assured.
As the camera cut to the bench, some of the substitutes could hardly bring themselves to watch, but Boattin, an unused replacement, struggled to hide her amusement at Kelly's misfortune.
England, and Kelly, would have the last laugh, however. With 60 seconds left on the clock Michelle Agyemang pounced on a loose ball to fire Sarina Wiegman's side level and spark riotous scenes.
But the drama did not end there. As another penalty shootout loomed the award of a controversial penalty saw Kelly afforded the chance to win the contest from the spot.
Although the Arsenal forward saw her effort saved, she remained alert enough to bury the rebound and booked her side's place in Sunday's showpiece.
Kelly's long-time international teammate Lucy Bronze, meanwhile, insisted England had nothing to prove after another dramatic comeback.
'I think people from the outside think teams have to win every single game,' defender Bronze said.
'I think people talk about consistency with this England team, we've done six consecutive semi-finals, three consecutive finals, who else has done that? Nobody.
'You know, Spain and Germany are fantastic teams, even they haven't managed that feat.
'It's hard to stay at the top in international football, so many teams, they have performances, then it's up and down, they develop, but this team just keeps fighting until the end.
'I feel like we didn't have anything to prove because we've been there, we've done it many, many times.
'It's just the fact that the game's getting better, international football's not as easy as it used to be. Everybody's fighting and everyone wants to win and everyone feels like they can win.'

Zoe Aldcroft: World Cup success for England can herald change in women's rugby

England captain Zoe Aldcroft believes a successful run at the World Cup can herald a 'change in women's rugby' similar to the team's memorable defeat of France at the Allianz Stadium in 2023. A 38-33 win to land a fifth-straight Six Nations title capped the Red Roses' first standalone fixture played at the home of English rugby, watched by a crowd of over 58,000, a record for a women's match. It marked a significant stride forward from the attendances of between 10,000 and 15,000 the team had typically drawn at previous editions when playing at smaller club-rugby grounds, and the skipper believes that another watershed moment awaits. John Mitchell's side open their home tournament on August 22 against the United States at Sunderland's Stadium of Light as they look to win back the trophy they last lifted in 2017 and to put to bed memories of the agonising 34-31 defeat to New Zealand four years ago that kept them from retaining the title. Aldcroft, who was appointed captain in January and is amongst the 32 players named in Mitchell's World Cup squad on Thursday, also thinks the example of England's women footballers in being crowned European champions on home soil three years ago proves the scale of the transformation possible if the team can become world champions at the Allianz Stadium on September 27. The tournament promises to offer a stark contrast to when the 28-year-old made her international debut in 2020. 'It was out in America and it was boiling hot,' said Aldcroft. 'There were no stands so people were just stood on the side of the pitch, I think there must have been about 30 people, if that. 'One of the most special games (for England) was the France game a couple of years ago. That was a moment when it felt like a real change in women's rugby. 'I think what the Lionesses are doing has been incredible, that you can see the country getting behind them. That's something that we want to achieve and build the momentum. 'Hopefully going into this tournament we'll be able to create that momentum and we'll get a packed out stadium here at Twickenham. That would be unbelievable. The same feelings would apply again about a change in women's rugby that is to come.' There were few surprises in Mitchell's squad with centre Emily Scarratt set to play a record fifth World Cup whilst scrum-half Natasha Hunt, who was a surprise omission when the team finished as runners-up four years ago, is also in. Current World Rugby player of the year Ellie Kildunne has also been named and she too anticipated a potentially pivotal moment in the growth of the women's game. 'I feel like it's been feeling big for the past three years,' said Kildunne. 'Since the last World Cup it's almost been everything that people have been talking about. 'It's not that I'm bored or people talking about it, I just actually want to play to show people everting that's been spoken of. 'We don't know what to expect, we're only focussing on ourselves and how we're playing, but the journey we're going to be on in the next few months, to see the rise and the crowds coming in, how much social media starts talking about women's rugby for the first time. That's something to be really excited about. 'It's not necessarily something that we're really focused on, but we're prepared for what's to come without knowing what that is.' After the tournament opener on Wearside, England move on to face Samoa in Northampton before concluding the group stage against Australia in Brighton.

Ferdinand backs Arsenal star to have 'breakout year' and drools over Dowman

Rio Ferdinand is 'begging' Mikel Arteta to give Ethan Nwaneri a greater role next season and believes it could be a 'proper breakout year' for the midfielder if he is handed more opportunities. Nwaneri announced himself as one of English football's most exciting talents last term, rising from Arsenal's academy ranks to establish himself as a genuine first-team option for Arteta, along with fellow Hale End product Myles Lewis-Skelly. The 18-year-old made a total of 37 appearances across the campaign, while chipping in with nine goals in all competitions – numbers he will no doubt be looking to improve on going forward. However, as Arsenal approached the business end of the season in both the Premier League and Champions League, Arteta tended to lean on his more experienced players, with the teenager starting just one of the Gunners' final nine matches. Competition for places in Arsenal's attacking areas means Nwaneri may have to be patient for a regular starting berth. He will, though, be encouraged to have been given the nod for the side's pre-season clash with AC Milan on Wednesday. But while Nwaneri shone in Singapore before coming off for Martin Odegaard, it was another wonderkid, Max Dowman, 15, who stole the show with a sublime cameo performance in the second half. After watching Arsenal's 1-0 victory over Milan, Ferdinand drooled over the club's wealth of young talent, with Dowman just the latest prospect to make his mark in the first-team. 'Everyone who watched the podcast knows that there's a different energy about me when I'm talking about young players,' the legendary ex-Manchester United and England defender said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel. 'I was the same with Kobbie Mainoo in the Euros, Phil Foden when he first burst onto the scene, Cole Palmer, Lamine Yamal, obviously, Desire Doue, great young players who just get you off your seat. You watch them and go, 'Oh, yeah! Give me some more of that!' 'This player played one pre-season game. I spoke about him in November and I've probably spoken about him a bit before that as well because I've seen him before as a young kid. Max Dowman, don't forget that name. Arsenal have produced another young gem.' Ferdinand added: 'They've got Nwaneri coming through, too, and I think this season could be his proper breakout year. I hope it will be. 'They've already had [Bukayo] Saka for a few years now who seems like an elder statesman in this changing room and there are 15-year-olds knocking about like Max Dowman. 'He's become one of the youngest Arsenal players to play at the club in a pre-season friendly in Singapore, against AC Milan by the way. Not minnows… AC Milan. 'It's early days but it looks like Declan Rice has taken him under his wing, he posted a picture of him on the coach travelling about.' Having kept tabs on Dowman's progress with interest, Ferdinand believes Arsenal may well have the finest 15-year-old talent in world football on their hands. 'He's definitely the best 15-year-old in the country, probably in Europe right now, maybe the world,' he continued. 'I keep seeing people say, 'Don't hype him!'… what are we in football for? What are we here for? We're here to be entertained, to get excited about young talent. We're here to talk about it, love it, appreciate it. 'We're not putting expectations on his name or saying he's got to play ten games or he's got to score five, ten goals. I'm just saying I love him! 'I want to see this, I want to see these young players coming out. He is a joke.' After Arsenal's defeat of Milan, Mikel Arteta admitted Dowman would have to raise his 'physical levels' if he is to become a first-team regular down the line. But according to Ferdinand, coaches and team-mates at Arsenal have been stunned by what the teen has been producing on a daily basis at the training ground. 'What I'm hearing from some of the people I know in the Arsenal camp is that he is transferring his 15-year-old ability that he showed with the Under-18s with Arsenal, with England,' he explained. 'He's playing years up, with the Under-21s, and shifting that into the first-team when he's training with them. More Trending 'The players and the coaching staff are going, 'We ain't really seen this', and transferring that into the first-team is ridiculous so long may this continue and I hope we're talking more and more about Max Dowman as the season goes on. 'Special shoutout to Ethan Nwaneri as well. I want to see him getting more game-time. Please, Mikel Arteta, play these kids because I think they're good enough. 'He's going to know them because he sees them more than me, but I'm just begging that he can give these kids more game-time while trying to win the Premier League which I know is difficult. 'But when there's talent, it's undeniable sometimes and I think these two boys are undeniable talents.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
