Energy Transition Must Fit Malaysia's Needs And Not Bow To Global Pressure
KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's energy transition policies must be based on national realities and domestic capabilities rather than simply adhering to international pressure, said Malakoff Corporation Bhd chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh.
The priority is ensuring energy security and stable supply for its ever-growing population which now stands at 34.6 million, he said.
While Malaysia supports the global shift towards clean energy, the country must adopt a pragmatic strategy that reflects its own limitations and energy demands.
'We can follow the global trend, but what is more important is that our policies must be suitable for Malaysia,' he said, echoing Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call earlier today for a pragmatic and balanced approach to ensure a just and equitable energy transition for Asia.
The prime minister emphasised that this approach is crucial for the region's continued development amid its shift towards renewable energy.
In an interview on Bernama TV's 'The Nation' programme today, Che Khalib said the public often associates the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) with solar energy, but Malaysia's ability to scale solar is limited by competing land use and inconsistent sunlight.
'In Malaysia, land is also needed for food production and forest conservation, we are not like the Middle East where you can just build solar farms in the desert, we have to balance our priorities,' he said.
He also pointed out that solar energy, while important, cannot be treated as a dependable power source due to weather variability, and stressed the need to improve fossil fuel efficiency in the short- to medium-term, rather than phasing it out entirely.
'Take cars, for example. Thirty years ago, a 2.0-litre engine was considered underpowered. Today, a 1.0-litre car can perform just as well. Similarly, fossil fuel plants must be upgraded to emit less while producing more,' said Che Khalib.

Financial sector must play key role in enabling SMEs in strategic growth sectors, says BNM Governor
Bank Negara governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. KUALA LUMPUR: As Malaysia charts its path forward under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the financial sector must play a transformative role in enabling small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to participate meaningfully in strategic growth sectors, said Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) governor Datuk Seri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour. He said this includes frontier industries such as semiconductors, aerospace, renewable energy, data centres and carbon capture technologies. The governor said such alignment is crucial as the country advances its national transformation agenda through key policy frameworks, including the New Industrial Master Plan and the National Energy Transition Roadmap. "The financial sector, including Credit Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Bhd (CGC), must evolve in tandem to support these reforms. "In this context, I would like to reflect on three areas where CGC, together with the broader financial sector, including Malaysia, can be part of this developmental roadmap,' Abdul Rasheed said during his keynote address at the CGC 30th Edition Award 2024 here today. He noted that CGC and financial institutions must step up efforts to unlock opportunities for SMEs in high-potential, capital-intensive industries. "These industries are capital-intensive and technology-driven, and often pose significant barriers to entry for smaller businesses. "A variety of mechanisms can play a catalytic role in mobilising private capital, managing risks arising from innovation and creating entry points for SMEs into these frontier sectors,' he said. The governor said a well-designed directive programme, paired with technical expertise, can help close information gaps -- enabling SMEs to transform and providing greater confidence for financial institutions to support them. He said the second key focus area is advancing data-driven SME development, highlighting CGC's internal transformation towards analytical and data-centric decision-making. "To this end, first, we must broaden financing access, not only for first-time growers, but also for growing firms with scalable potential. "Second, we must invest in sustainable financing channels, including green and Islamic finance solutions, and we must deepen ecosystem partnerships that blend traditional finance with fintech, data and socio-economic tools,' he added. - Bernama

Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka follows strict procurement process
KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of all stakeholders involved in developing the Malaysia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Japan, adhered to official evaluation and selection processes under government procurement rules. Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz clarified this in response to allegations that a private company's design work was used without recognition or payment. MITI has completed an internal investigation into the claims and is engaging the company to resolve the matter amicably. 'This ensures Malaysia's participation in Expo 2025 Osaka remains unaffected, with goals fully achieved,' Tengku Zafrul said in Parliament. The ministry aims to maintain momentum and safeguard the country's international reputation. Addressing concerns raised by Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng, Tengku Zafrul emphasized MITI's commitment to transparency and accountability. 'Lessons from this issue will refine internal guidelines, particularly in selecting partners for high-impact projects,' he added. The ministry will strengthen oversight to prevent similar incidents in future government projects. - Bernama

1.2 million jobs via TVET, digital econ
Published on: Friday, August 01, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 01, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Kuala Lumpur: The government will introduce the Perkasa Madani TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Financing Scheme and the TVET Training Fund to encourage youth participation. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, when tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13) with the theme 'Redesigning' at the Dewan Rakyat, said that the TVET programme would also be expanded to tahfiz students to produce Madani huffaz technocrats with added value in technical expertise. The government, he said, will also expand the TVET curriculum to include the field of ageing with special incentives for students undergoing industrial training. 'TVET programmes are gaining popularity. In 2024 alone, 212,000 new admissions into TVET programmes were recorded,' he said, adding that the Madani TVET programme will be strengthened to increase the mastery of skills that can generate higher income, including for tahfiz and huffaz students. 'At the same time, the level of TVET certification will be increased by introducing three new levels of expertise, six to eight, to be equivalent to the level of higher education qualifications under the Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF). This effort aims to recognise high skills in technical fields and expand career paths, in line with market needs,' said the prime minister. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said TVET graduates are also enjoying increasingly competitive incomes, most of which exceeded the minimum wage of RM1,700. 'About 95.6 per cent of TVET graduates are able to secure employment within six months of completing their training,' he said. He said the close collaboration between TVET institutions and industry would serve as a catalyst for technological transfer and skills enhancement in line with initiatives by the Ministry of Higher Education. 'The structure of TVET programme offerings will be re-strategised with a focus on high-growth, high-value (HGHV) and advanced technology-based industries. 'This is in line with labour market demands and strategic industry needs such as in the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) project and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP),' he said. He said the government is targetting the creation of 700,000 new job opportunities in the manufacturing sector and another 500,000 career creations in the digital economy during the 13MP period. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
