The Hindu2 days ago
Coimbatore local planning area (LPA), including Coimbatore Corporation, four municipalities, 21 town panchayats and 66 revenue villages, is envisaged to have a 119.3 km outer ring road, nine industrial clusters, and five major economic corridors by 2041.
The second Master Plan for Coimbatore, released by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, projects 58.4 lakh population in Coimbatore LPA by 2041. With a total area of 257.81 sq. km, the Coimbatore Corporation is the second largest city in the State, next to Chennai. It had a population of 15.84 lakhs in 2011 and a population density of 61.41 persons per hectare. By 2021, the population is expected to have grown to 20.51 lakhs and in the LPA area, it is likely to be 31.62 lakhs.
In the total LPA area, at present, 59.62 % of land use is for agriculture purpose, 20.73 % for residential, and 5.12 % for industrial purposes. The city has 6.72 % area as water bodies and 0.61 % area for recreation/lung space.
Saravanampatti and Kalapatti have emerged as prime residential modules because of the growth of the IT sector in the nearby areas. Vellakinar, Thudiyalur, and Veerakeralam are also growing rapidly as residential hubs. By 2041, Coimbatore city and areas under the LPA should have ready-to-use industrial infrastructure, more medium-scale industries, retail clusters, and should evolve as a startup and innovation capital among tier-two cities in the country.
It is projected to have higher retail development on Mettupalayam road and surrounding areas, Information Technology sector growth on Saravanampatti road and nearby areas, industrial growth along Pollachi road and institutions on Avinashi road. The plan expects industrial clusters - GCC and Information Technology on Sathyamangalam Road, Defence units in and around Sulur, Electric vehicles, automobile sector in Arasur and Moperipalayam, medi tech, bio tech along Avinashi Road, and also clusters for renewable energy, agro processing, textiles, and engineering.
The plan has incorporated the alignment for 119.3 km outer ring road, including western road from Madukkarai to Gudalur, eastern road from Narasimhanaikenpalayam to Karanampettai, and southern road from Madukkarai to Selakkaraichal.
The Peelamedu, Podanur and Irugur railway stations should be upgraded and logistics units are developing around Irugur, according to the plan.

Gujarat Vidyapith registers 27% increase in admissions within a year

Gujarat Vidyapith, a 104-year-old institution founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920, is adapting to changing demands while eying an increase in enrolment. For the upcoming academic session starting July 10, the university has seen a 27% increase in admissions, from 850 last year to nearly 1,080, driven by new programmes and flexible offerings. A few dynamic decisions by the institution include opening an on-the-spot postgraduate (PG) programme in MSc IT (Master of Science in Information Technology) within a single day, accommodating the waiting list of already running MCA (Master of Computer Applications) programme and launching undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in commerce. The MSc IT programme for which against an intake of 60 students, 50 seats are already filled barring the reserved seats that are vacant, on the spot statutory permissions were sought within a single day leading to a waiting list for the course. University sources said that special meetings of Academic Council and Executive Council were held and required notification was issued for launching the MSc IT programme. 'Following the entrance test, against the 66 seats for the MCA programme, nearly 250 candidates qualified. When enquired if they are willing to enrol in MSc IT, most of them agreed. This was also possible because while the MCA programme is permitted by All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) while the MSc IT programme is under the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines,' Gujarat Vidyapith Vice-Chancellor Harshad Patel told The Indian Express. There was a rise in MCA applications from around 150 to 250, this year. Sharing the reason, the authorities said as the first batch of BCA passed out this year, nearly 15 students from the same batch applied for the postgraduate programme. 'Looking at the demand, we doubled the seats for BCA from 30 to 60 for the new academic session,' Head of Department, Computer Science, Prof Ajay Parikh told this paper. The other new programmes launched this year are B Com and M Com. The institution also started commerce programmes from this year, authorities revealed. During the three-day Chintan Shivir, held on December 24 last year, one of the most discussed topics included how to increase the intake in Gujarat Vidyapith. Authorities stated that the Vidyapith is aiming at an enrolment of 3000 by 2030, a criteria the university needs to fulfil to stay deemed as per the new National Education Policy rules. So, launching the commerce programmes, increasing the entrance examination centres both in numbers and geographically along with other measures were decided upon during this Chintan Shivir, said sources. 'However, launching the MSc IT course was decided on-the-spot after a surge in MCA applications,' officials revealed. The number of admissions is also expected to rise as the admission deadline has been extended by a month, from June 30 to July 31. One of the measures to increase the enrolment was a simplified admission process, conducted online, leading to a reduced cancellation rate. 'From nearly 400 cancellations recorded last year, so far less than 60 have been registered,' Prof Parikh added. Looking at the demand, another postgraduate programme started in the academic session 2024-25 was MSc Food and Nutrition. 'Within a year, the number of admissions increased from 4-5 to nearly 26,' he added. Among the 34 total UG and PG degree and diploma programmes offered at Gujarat Vidyapith, the top five popular ones are MCA followed by BEd, BCA, BSc and MSc in Microbiology and MSc IT. *Total applications registered 2147; 1077 male and 1070 female Students who took entrance: 1683 Fee paid for courses: 1077 MCA: 250 applications against 66 seats BEd:187 applications against 110 seats BCA:160 applications against 66 seats MSW:107 applications against 66 seats MSc IT: 85 applications against 66 seats

83cr plan proposed to upgrade public toilets

Chennai: Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed a 83 crore project to expand and upgrade public toilet infrastructure across Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, and Marina Beach. The plan includes building new facilities with 380 toilet seats at 60 locations and introducing night shift maintenance for 750 existing seats to ensure 24x7 availability. This proposal follows earlier works under 'Package One', which saw the renovation of 3,271 toilet seats across 260 locations in Zones 5, 6, and Marina. Based on recent directions from GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran, toilets in playgrounds and crematoriums will now also be brought under the maintenance contract. Zonal officials have identified additional facilities requiring upgrades or inclusion. Of the new additions, 260 seats will be constructed at 25 locations, while 99 seats will undergo minor repairs and 17 major refurbishments. Only four toilets at Marina Beach will fall under the current operation and maintenance contract. An independent engineer's survey found that 43 locations — housing 750 toilet seats — need night-time maintenance. Contractors will be paid monthly based on certified progress or completion, with bills verified by the independent engineer and approved by zonal officials. However, concerns remain about the quality of implementation. K Jothimani, a resident of Royapuram, said many toilets renovated in previous phases remain in disrepair due to poor upkeep. "Several toilets have been unusable for months. Instead of outsourcing, the corporation should directly oversee maintenance," he said.
