PFF gives some interesting player comps to predict J.J. McCarthy's 2025 season

USA Today17 hours ago

J.J. McCarthy has had to delay his debut for the Vikings by a year due to a torn meniscus suffered in his first preseason game for the team last August. Fast forward 10 months later, everyone within the team, media, and fanbase are excited to see what he is going to look like for the Vikings.
Everyone has weighed in on what a good season could look like and what a bad one could look like. The folks at Pro Football Focus decided to take it a step further and paint a picture with some player comps for how the season may go. PFF's John Kosko wanted to give ceilings and floors for second-year quarterbacks while projecting how their season may go.
When it came time to discuss J.J. McCarthy and his second year with the team, Kosko gave quite a wide range of results for the former Michigan Wolverine signal caller. The ideal result would include him having a season similar to that of Joe Burrow, while a worst-case type of season would be similar to what we saw from Sam Darnold.
"McCarthy wasn't asked to carry the national-championship Michigan team, but when he needed to, he delivered. While he wasn't elite at generating big-time throws, nor was his turnover-worthy rate spectacularly low, McCarthy excelled under pressure and when facing the blitz. His success rate in both situations ranked third in the class, behind Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix. Darnold's career looked over until his incredible 2024 season with the Vikings. Assuming McCarthy is better than Darnold for his career isn't a stretch, but nothing is ever a guarantee at quarterback."
Burrow is an MVP candidate every single year he plays a full 17-game schedule for the Bengals, so that comp is music to Vikings fans' ears. Now, the Sam Darnold comparison may spark some nightmares for fans after last season's dramatic and sharp fall from a high.
Whatever the results may be for McCarthy, the support from the defense, offensive line, and skill players should be enough around him to give him every chance to succeed this season and beyond.

Shohei Ohtani's pitching return sees insane 71% ticket prices jump

The post Shohei Ohtani's pitching return sees insane 71% ticket prices jump appeared first on ClutchPoints. On a wild Sunday in Major League Baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers made waves by revealing Shohei Ohtani would make his return to the mound on Monday night. Advertisement Ohtani will make his first start since August 23, 2023 as a member of the Los Angeles Angels. It'll be the first time he takes the mound as a member of the Dodgers and ticket prices are reflecting that. The average ticket price for Monday's Dodgers game against the San Diego Padres is $192, up 71% since it was announced, according to ESPN's Field Yates. Yates also says, per TickPick, the Dodgers sold four-times more tickets to the game compared to before. Though the Dodgers say Ohtani is not yet built up to be a full starter, he can function now as a multi-inning opener and go from there. He has been recovering from UCL surgery, functioning as a full-time DH last year and so far this year. Ohtani has been building up without pitching in rehab games, continuing to bat in the Majors for the reigning World Series champions. He began facing live batters in late May as his ramp-up accelerated. Advertisement 'The live, simulated or whatever sort of ran its course,' manager Dave Roberts told the media on Sunday. 'He's ready to make his debut on the mound.' Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani remains one of the game's elite hitters Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Ohtani is coming off consecutive MVP campaigns, which included a 2024 season that was one of the best all-around seasons by a hitter ever. He became the only 50-50 player in baseball history, hitting 54 home runs and stealing 59 bases, all while leading the league in runs scored, RBI, on-base percentage and OPS. He hasn't missed a beat in 2025. Ohtani hasn't been as active on the basepaths with only 11 steals, but he's leading the National League in home runs (25) while maintaining his league-leading status in runs scored and OPS. Advertisement Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Ohtani expressed excitement about going back to being a two-way player. 'I do feel like just being the two-way player I used to be is the norm,' he said. 'Last year was the abnormal year for me, and it's about getting back to what I used to do.' Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani already set another two-way record after return to mound

The post Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani already set another two-way record after return to mound appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Dodgers are still taking it slow with Shohei Ohtani when it comes to his pitching. Although he has already made two starts on the mound for Los Angeles, he remains to have a short leash as a pitcher, having only pitched an inning in his first two pitching appearances in Dodgers threads. Advertisement Nevertheless, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player made history on Sunday during his second pitching duty for LA, as mentioned by Sarah Langs of Via Langs on X (formerly Twitter): This is the second time Shohei Ohtani has had at least a homer and a triple in a game he pitched in (5/15/23). He's the only player with multiple such games in at least the last 125 seasons. The 30-year-old Ohtani tossed for just an inning against the Nats, but it was an improvement from his Los Angeles pitching debut almost a week ago. Against the San Diego Padres on Jun. 16, Shohei Ohtani allowed an earned run on two hits with zero strikeouts through 28 pitches in a 6-3 victory at Dodger Stadium. Advertisement Against the Nationals, the four-time All-Star had given up zero runs and no hits with two punchouts across 18 pitches to help the Dodgers eke out a 13-7 win at home. He also did his magic with the bat, as he went 2-for-4 at the plate on a five-RBI outing, including the two runs he drove off a 383-foot home run he hit in the eighth inning that stretched Los Angeles' lead to 10. The first time Ohtani pitched and sent one deep in the same game was back when he was still with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023, during a May road game at Oriole Park at Camden Yards versus the Baltimore Orioles. He pitched for seven innings in that contest and surrendered five earned runs on four hits with two walks and five Ks, but he also helped his and the Halos' cause despite his mediocre outing on the mound by going 4-for-5 at the plate while scoring three runs, including a three-run blast. As for the Dodgers, they improved to 48-31 after taking the series finale against Washington. Ohtani's seeming gradual improvement on the mound is great news for the Dodgers amid their banged-up pitching staff that is without injured hurlers like Tyler Glasnow and Roki Sasaki.
