New Delhi: A parliamentary panel has sought details from two key ministries overseeing information flow on the action they have planned against social media platforms and influencers who "seem to be working against national interest", following the Pahalgam terror attack. The parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology , headed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Nishikant Dubey, has noted that some social media influencers and platforms in the country seem to be working against national interest, which is likely to incite violence, sources said.The committee, in a communication to the ministries of Information and Broadcasting and Electronics and Information Technology, has sought details of the "contemplated action to ban such platforms under IT Act, 2000 and Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021".The letter, the sources said, has been sent to the secretaries of the two ministries and they have been asked to submit the details by May 8.Several social-media handles have been banned on different platforms after they allegedly posted content against national-security interests.Twenty-six people, mostly tourists, were gunned down by terrorists in south Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22, with India blaming terror groups linked to Pakistan for the horrific incident.Trinamool Congress MP Saket Gokhale, who is a member of the panel, said in a post on X that he had not received any communication related to the issue quoted in the memorandum. He claimed that according to rules, the chairperson cannot issue a statement without the approval of the committee.Gokhale, however, deleted his post later.

BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has denied anticipatory bail to an Indore-based cartoonist Hemant Malviya who was booked by police on May 21 for allegedly posting objectionable content about the RSS, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Lord Shiva. Dismissing Malviya's anticipatory bail plea, Justice Subodh Abhyankar said, 'The applicant ought to have used his discretion, while drawing the aforesaid caricature, and he had clearly overstepped the threshold of freedom of speech and expression, and doesn't appear to know his limits. In view of the same, this Court is of the considered opinion that the custodial interrogation of the applicant would be necessary.' 'The conduct of the anticipatory bail applicant in depicting the RSS, which is a Hindu organisation, along with the country's PM in the aforesaid caricature, coupled with his endorsement of a rather demeaning remark, dragging unnecessarily the name of Lord Shiva in the comments tagged to it, is nothing but the sheer misuse of speech and expression as enshrined under Art.19(1)(a) of the Constitution, and falls under the definition of offence as contended by the complainant,' the judge added. 'In the considered opinion of this Court, the post becomes more unsettling when the aforesaid derogatory lines involving Lord Shiva are also added to it, and which have also been favourably endorsed by the applicant himself who is also encouraging other people to experiment with the said caricature, which certainly cannot be said to be made in good taste or faith,' the court said in its five-page order dated July 3. 'It is apparent that the applicant's aforesaid act is deliberate and malicious intended to outrage religious feelings of the complainant and the public at large by insulting its religion, which is prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony in the society,' it observed. The High Court's decision came 40 days after a sessions court in Indore had rejected Malviya's anticipatory bail plea on 24 May. The FIR against Malviya was registered at the Lasudia police station in Indore on 21 May following a complaint by RSS worker and MP High Court advocate Vinay Joshi. Malviya has been booked under BNS Sections 196, 299, 302, 352, 353(2), and Section 67(A) of the IT Act. Joshi alleged that Malviya had deliberately shared 'offensive,' 'indecent,' and 'obscene' caricatures intended to hurt Hindu religious sentiments. Malviya, who identifies on social media as an artist, cartoonist, and wedding decorator, frequently uses satire to comment on political and social issues. His Facebook account features cartoons, videos, and images that often target the political establishment.

Fraudster, posing as bride on matrimonial site, dupes civil contractor of Rs 1.6 crore
Hyderabad: A civil contractor was duped of Rs 1.6 crore by a fraudster posing as a prospective bride on a matrimonial platform. According to the 36-year-old complainant from Gundlapochampally, he first came into contact with the fraudster, who identified herself as 'Priyanka', through a matrimonial site for divorcees on April 11, 2025. Their conversations soon shifted to WhatsApp. 'Priyanka' claimed she lived in Singapore and worked with a US-based crypto-trading company. She eventually persuaded the victim to try his hand at trading in cryptocurrency. Though initially reluctant, the victim gave in to the pressure and installed an app through a link she provided. On April 13, he transferred Rs 50,000 to a bank account specified by the fraudster as initial investment. On Monday, he approached the Cyberabad cybercrime police and lodged a complaint. A case was registered under sections 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 319(2) (cheating by personation), 336(3) (forgery for purpose of cheating), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc.), 340(2) (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) read with 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and section 66-D of the IT Act. Police are analysing the details of the beneficiary accounts and the five phone numbers used by the fraudsters to identify them.

Unidentified booked for misusing identity to email complaint against Doon judge
Dehradun: A case was registered against an unidentified individual for allegedly using another man's credentials to send an email to the Dehradun district judge, with accusations against both the judge and a local builder, police said on Tuesday. The incident came to light after Mansi Singh, wife of Ambar Prakash, lodged a complaint at Raipur police station on June 30. Raipur SHO sub-inspector Girish Negi said, "Ambar had received a call from the district judge's office on June 28 regarding an email purportedly sent by him on June 18, containing offensive language and allegations against the district judge and a builder, Ankrodaya Kumar." Negi added that Ambar denied sending any such email, following which, his wife approached the police. "Preliminary probe found Singh's allegations were genuine and a case was registered under relevant sections of the IT Act. A probe is on to identify and nab the accused," he said.
