Coastal folks to feel climate change effects

Kota Kinabalu: Independent Non-Executive Chairman of Life Water Berhad, Datuk Petrus Gimbad, has urged risk professionals to take climate change seriously, warning that Sabah's coastal communities could face mounting threats from rising sea levels and extreme weather events. Delivering the keynote address at the Marim International Conference 2025 on Tuesday, Petrus, who is also a private consultant (Sabah Government Representative) to the Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia, said global warming is on track to exceed the 1.5°C threshold unless fossil fuel dependency is significantly reduced.
Advertisement 'Global warming is real. Unless the world reduces its appetite for fossil fuels, we will overshoot 1.5°C,' he said. He stressed that organisations must adopt whole-system approaches to sustainability, including full life cycle assessments of their operations, and align business practices with environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals. Petrus also cited lessons from China and Singapore, where energy transition strategies are being balanced with the need for reliability and development. 'Sabah must plan carefully. We have financial and infrastructure limitations, especially on the east coast, and these must be addressed if we are to pursue large-scale renewable energy options,' he said. Marim Chairman Muhammad Faisha Shahriman called on risk professionals to move beyond compliance and become strategic leaders within their organisations. 'We are expected to make sense of changes in regulation, policy, economics and technology and to help organisations respond in ways that are timely, strategic and sound,' he said. Held for the first time in Sabah, the two-day conference attracted over 300 participants and 24 exhibitors, with more than 60 per cent of attendees representing government-linked companies (GLCs). Themed 'The Antifragile Risk Manager – Resourceful, Resilient, Relevant' the event aims to strengthen the capacity of risk leaders to manage complex threats and support sustainable growth. Faisha also highlighted Marim's recent partnership with the UK-based Institute of Risk Management (IRM) to expand global certification pathways for Malaysian professionals. He acknowledged long-standing support from the Labuan International Insurance Association (LIIA) and the Malaysian Insurance and Takaful Brokers Association (MITBA). Participants at the conference include professionals from sectors such as oil and gas, banking, infrastructure, agribusiness, telecommunications, manufacturing and legal services. Key topics being discussed over the two days include ESG, cyber risk, climate transition, corporate governance and risk culture. WORLD By Shakir Husain NEW DELHI, July 27 (Bernama) -- Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar called on Bangladesh interim leader Muhammad Yunus in Dhaka on Sunday. Yunus, during the meeting, sought Malaysia's support for Bangladesh to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). "We want to become a part of ASEAN, and we will need your support," he told Nurul Izzah, according to a Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha report. Bangladesh applied to become an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner in 2020. Yunus also invited Malaysian companies to invest in Bangladesh's growing economy. "Asia is ageing rapidly, but Bangladesh has a lot of young people. Half of our population is under the age of 27. Set up your industries here and export from Bangladesh. It will help both our economies," he said. The interim government's chief advisor informed the PKR deputy chief about Bangladesh's political reforms following last year's uprising, which ended Sheikh Hasina's nearly 16-year rule. Nurul Izzah spoke at Dhaka University on Sunday at a conference marking the first anniversary of the July Revolution.

Tabung Pahlawan Campaign Has Raises RM2.18 Mln
ALOR GAJAH, July 27 (Bernama) -- The 2025 Tabung Pahlawan Campaign, launched in conjunction with Warriors' Day, has raised RM2.186 million as of July 24, reflecting the people's continued support towards the welfare of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said to widen outreach and simplify contributions, the ministry had also introduced a QR code donation campaign as an alternative, targeting a minimum of RM1 from every Malaysian. 'Malaysia has more than 34 million people, imagine if every person contributes at least RM1, the impact would be tremendous. 'That's why we've launched the QR code campaign, which is now widely circulated via social media and official government channels. We hope this will encourage more people to contribute,' he told Bernama after attending a high tea event with Melaka MAF veterans, in conjunction with the 2025 Warriors' Day celebration at Dataran Gangsa, here today. Also present were Veterans' Affairs Department (JHEV) director-general Maj Gen Datuk Semaon Marjuki and JHEV Melaka and Negeri Sembilan director, Major Muhammad Zarifi Tumin. Earlier at the event, 120 MAF veterans from Melaka, representing 22 associations, were celebrated. They were presented with contributions, including Cost of Living Aid, Higher Education Aid, Home Repair Assistance, and 'Bakul Rahmah' food baskets. At the same time, Adly said 151,000 MAF veterans had registered and were now using the Veteran Digital Card, which was introduced in September last year. 'With the digital card, veterans no longer need to carry a physical card as all their information is now accessible on their smartphones. So for those who haven't made the switch, we strongly encourage them to do so and to update their information. 'Although the physical card is still in use, the digital version offers easier access for members, especially to information on health, welfare, and other services,' he said.
