Fashion Mourns the Loss of Afa Ah Loo, the Samoan Designer Killed at a 'No Kings' March

Vogue16-06-2025
On Saturday, Samoan fashion designer Afa Ah Loo—who was known for his distinctive and vibrant culture-based designs—was killed during what was supposed to be a peaceful 'No Kings' march in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The designer was part of a crowd of over 10,000 people in Salt Lake City marching in solidarity with the 'No Kings' protest—a nation-wide movement that occurred in several major cities on Saturday, held in opposition the immigration policies put in place by President Donald J. Trump and his current administration.
According to reports, Loo was the victim of a shooting, and was deemed an 'innocent bystander.' (An investigation from the Salt Lake City Police Department report that he was struck by an alleged peacekeeper, and was 'not the intended target.')
Born and raised in Samoa, Loo learned how to sew from his mother, and went on to design unique fashions through his namesake label that highlighted Pacific Islander culture. In 2019, he was a contestant on season 17 of Project Runway, and recently focused on offering community sewing workshops in his home state of Utah.
Notably, last year, Loo created a special red carpet look for Moana star Auliʻi Cravalho; It consisted of a cape made of white Dovetail shells that was reminiscent of a Hawaiian ʻahu ʻula, a feather cloak worn by ancient Hawaiian royalty. Cravalho is among many celebrities and fashion insiders who took to social media today to mourn the designer's loss. 'There are no words to hold the grief of losing @afa.ahloo,' she wrote. 'As a Samoan fashion designer, Afa's creations are and remain thoughtful, elegant and powerful portrayals of Pacific culture. . . Your artistry will never be forgotten; and neither will your peaceful protest.' Top stylist Jessica Paster, who has styled Cravalho, commented, 'This is heartbreaking. Rest in power.'
Deomcratic Utah Representatives Verona Mauga and Jacob Fitisemanu Jr., meanwhile, also shared a joint statement on his passing. 'Afa inspired us to stand up against injustice and to speak out for the voiceless, and his final steps in this life were taken in the service of others, as a call to action, as a gesture of love. '
In addition to his own design work, Loo also founded the Creative Pacific Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and fostering cultural exchange in fashion.
Loo is survived by his wife, Laura, and two children. A GoFundMe has been started in their honor.

General Hospital Recap: Anna Questions Sonny About Natalia's Death

General Hospital Recap: Anna Questions Sonny About Natalia's Death originally appeared on Daytime Confidential. On today's General Hospital recap: Kristina wants out of the hospital, but Alexis insists she stay. Kristina explains what happened and how Marco saved her life. Alexis is still blaming Sonny. When Molly stops by, Kristina tells her that she doesn't blame Sonny, though she understands her mother's fear. Molly says she can't lose her sister. Marco sits crying at his mother's bedside and then wants details on what happened. Anna explains how they found Natalia unresponsive, and Isaiah tells him that she couldn't be revived. Marco tells them about the drunk text and says he was on his way to see his mother when he came across the fire. Anna tells him ADA Turner asked them to pick up Natalia, because she'd shown up at the christening to talk to Sonny. Marco believes Sonny killed Natalia and the overdose was no accident. He says Natalia had evidence on Sonny she was going to turn over and is certain Sonny wanted to stop her. Lucas stops him from telling Anna that Natalia was planning on leaving town. Brook Lynn tells Tracy that Deception is in trouble and how some of Sonny's money wasn't clean. Tracy' is upset but Brook Lynn blames herself and defends Sonny. She says it was the accountant's mistake, and they need to bury it. Tracy says they should use it to their advantage. Tracy thinks they should let the authorities know, but Brook Lynn worries about Gio, since Sonny is the only person he talks to. Tracy says she's also trying to protect Gio. Chase updates Tracy and Brook Lynn on the fire at Charlie's and Natalia's death. He says Anna is on her way to talk to Sonny as he's a possible suspect. Tracy decides she needs to get a hold of Gio to get him away from Sonny. Vaughn finds Josslyn outside Charlie's, upset about the fire. She tells him Kristina almost died because of Sonny. She says this is one of the reasons she wanted to join the bureau, in order to take Sonny down. Josslyn figures Vaughn will use her vendetta to get her out of the WSB, but he likes she has a goal. The two share a kiss. Sonny tells Jason he's certain Sidwell is responsible for the fire at Charlie's, and since he came to town, two of his children have almost died. Jason promises they'll find out who set the fire. Sonny says he's fine if Marco becomes collateral damage. Sidwell summons Selina and tells her that she's in the middle of a war with Sonny. Selina says she has an understanding with Sonny, but Sidwell says two of her goons doused Charlie's and Sonny will follow the trail back to her. Selina realizes Sidwell has set her up. She says she'll talk to Sonny, but Sidwell doesn't think he will listen to her. Sidwell says her goons will point the finger at her and she should leave town. Selina says if she leaves, she could only come back if Sonny is dead. Sidwell agrees and Selina agrees to accept the blame and leave. Gio tells Emma he's thinking of dropping out of PCU. He doesn't want to play the violin anymore and knows he will lose his scholarship. Emma mentions Sonny, but Gio says he feels uncomfortable taking money from him now. She tells him to wait and see how he feels in September. Emma asks Gio for help proving Dalton is testing on animals, in order to keep him occupied. She says she can't prove anything because she can't get into the lab. Liz and Lucas discuss the possibility Sonny had Natalia killed. They note, with Kristina almost dying, this could be the start of a mob war. Marco is too frazzled to call his father, so Lucas calls Sidwell and tells him about Natalia's death. Sidwell heads to the hospital to comfort his son. Marco blames himself, telling Sidwell he was delayed getting to Natalia because he stopped to help Kristina. Marco says thanks to him, Sonny's daughter is alive, but thanks to Sonny, his mother is dead. Anna shows up at Sonny's and tells him Natalia is dead. Sonny denies any connection, but Anna shows him footage of one of his bodyguards talking to Natalia at the hotel. Anna says Natalia was planning on giving evidence to the ADA but subsequently died. She tells Sonny he's a person of interest and must take him in. Keep checking back for the latest General Hospital recaps! Obvious Losers, Unexpected Winners As Tax Bill Passes Senate

Clean energy stocks delivered mixed performances on Wednesday as investors continued digesting the Senate's surprise revisions to President Trump's 'big, beautiful bill.' Utility-scale solar firms remained under pressure, while residential solar, hydrogen, and U.S.-based battery storage companies extended gains amid signs the legislation favors domestic supply chains and penalizes projects linked to China. NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE) slipped another 1.2% on Wednesday, compounding earlier losses, while AES Corp. (NYSE:AES) closed flat after a two-day decline of more than 6%. Shoals Technologies (NASDAQ:SHLS), already down over 14% on Monday, dropped another 3.6% Wednesday. Nextracker (NASDAQ:NXT) slid 2.4%, and Enphase Energy (NASDAQ:ENPH) shed another 4.2%, extending its weekly decline past 15%. Array Technologies (NASDAQ:ARRY) was down 1.8% Wednesday, failing to recover from Monday's -10.1% plunge, as investors reassessed the near-term pipeline risk from the new operational deadline for tax credit eligibility. But There Are Winners, Too … Sunrun (NASDAQ:RUN) added 2.7% Wednesday, bringing its weekly gain to nearly 17% as markets priced in a more favorable outlook for distributed solar. First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) advanced another 1.5% on the day following two strong sessions. Analysts at Jefferies upgraded the stock, calling it a key winner from U.S. content incentives and tariffs on Chinese materials. Fluence Energy (NASDAQ:FLNC) and Eos Energy Enterprises (NASDAQ:EOSE), both operating battery storage projects in the U.S., gained 3.1% and 2.5% respectively. As noted here, traders continue rotating into companies best positioned to meet the new sourcing and operations deadlines. And Hydrogen is getting a boost, as well. Hydrogen stocks surged for a third straight session after the Senate unexpectedly extended the 45V clean hydrogen production tax credit to 2027. Plug Power (NASDAQ:PLUG) soared another 8.2% Wednesday, bringing its three-day gain to more than 40%. Bloom Energy (NYSE:BE) added 3.4%, and Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ:BLDP) rose 2.2%, supported by increasing optimism that delayed U.S. hydrogen projects will now move forward under more favorable terms. Coal, nuclear, and legacy energy stocks have also caught the tailwinds. Steelmaking coal producers continued to gain on Wednesday after the bill granted critical minerals tax credit eligibility to metallurgical coal. Alpha Metallurgical Resources (NYSE:AMR) rose 1.9%, Warrior Met Coal (NYSE:HCC) added 2.4%, and Peabody Energy (NYSE:BTU) was up 1.5%. Meanwhile, uranium and nuclear-linked equities also saw light buying as the bill preserved tax credits for non-carbon baseload power including nuclear, hydro, and geothermal. Cameco (NYSE:CCJ) and Constellation Energy (NASDAQ:CEG) rose modestly, up 0.7% and 1.1% respectively. Policy In the Volatility Driver's Seat The Senate bill tightens tax credit qualification rules by requiring renewable projects to be operational by 2027, rather than just under construction. It also levies new taxes on projects that use Chinese-sourced materials and allows some carveouts for clean hydrogen and domestic manufacturers. According to Rhodium Group estimates, the combination of tax loss and China-linked penalties could raise project costs by up to 20%, with developers likely to pass that through in electricity prices. The American Clean Power Association warned of an 8–10% rise in consumer electricity bills if the proposal is enacted. With the bill headed back to the House for reconciliation, market participants are bracing for additional volatility. Fiscal conservatives are expected to contest the Senate version's deficit impact—estimated to add roughly $1 trillion more than the House-passed bill from May. For now, traders are positioning around likely winners with U.S.-centric supply chains, while pricing in risk for utility-scale developers with international exposure.
