Gurgaon pushes for sanitation overhaul with ward-level action plan

Every ward will be treated as an independent unit, equipped with one earthmover, three tractors, four to five sanitation workers and oversight by the ward councillor, junior engineer and SDO.
"A one-month intensive cleaning campaign will be undertaken in each ward. The best-performing ward will be honoured by the chief minister with a cash reward," urban local bodies (ULB) minister Vipul Goel said on Monday.
Goel, who was in the city to review the sanitation work, asked officials to treat the campaign as a mission, saying "cleanliness in the city is a top priority for the state".
He asked them to make the city "beautiful and clean". The plan was discussed at a review meeting held at the PWD rest house after the minister visited the Bandhwari waste plant.
Goel — while addressing the meeting attended by deputy commissioner Ajay Kumar, MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, municipal commissioner of Faridabad Dhirendra Khadgata and senior officials from GMDA and MCG — said Gurgaon is seen as a global city and the "work done here sends a message at the national and international level".
Goel asked officials to submit a detailed report of the work done so far. He also said construction and demolition (C&D) waste sites must be improved without delay.
Officials said tenders for C&D waste disposal will be issued before Aug 10. The minister also ordered a survey of 20-year-old sewer lines in areas prone to waterlogging.
"Based on the report, it will be decided whether to repair or replace the sewer network.

The task must be completed within a month," Goel said.
The minister asked the officials to ensure secondary garbage collection points are properly enclosed to ensure these are not visibly unpleasant and improve hygiene surrounding these points.
He ordered that potholes formed during monsoon be identified for early repair after the rains end.
Earlier in the day, Goel visited the Bandhwari landfill site and directed the officials to ensure proper disposal of leachate generated at the waste management plant.
He also asked the officials to expedite the tender process for the disposal of legacy waste.
MCG chief Pradeep Dahiya said that beautification works at the plant are progressing well.
"Improvements are being made not only from an environmental perspective but also to enhance the site's visual appeal for the general public. The installation of a view cutter to screen the plant from the road has been completed. A tender has been floated for additional works including plantation, fencing, tree guards, surface turfing and landscaping, with an estimated cost of Rs 96 lakh," Dahiya said.
Meanwhile, MCG has launched an intensified garbage collection drive following directions from the ULB commissioner and secretary Vikas Gupta on Sunday.

Cabinet approves urgent relief & rehab measures
T'puram: The Cabinet on Wednesday instructed Wayanad district collector to urgently take steps to provide ROR (record of rights) for the land identified for tribal families affected by Chooralmala landslide disaster. Steps will be taken to grant ROR for 5 hectares. Five families from Punchirimattam and three families from the new village, included in the Mundakkai rehabilitation list, will be resettled by constructing houses modelled after the Wayanad Township Project. Five families from Erattukandam, not currently on the rehabilitation list, will be included in the Mundakkai list. They will be allotted 10 cents and a house each, a communication from the CMO said. A memorial will be built at Puthumala, where disaster victims were buried. The estimate of Rs 99.93 lakh submitted by the construction centre for the memorial has also been approved by cabinet. The procedure issued by collector on Feb 22, 2025, based on the guidelines prepared by the health department for granting medical financial assistance to Wayanad disaster victims, has been cleared. The benefits of the Karunya Health Security Scheme will also be extended to those seeking treatment in govt hospitals. The free treatment scheme has been extended until Dec 31. An amount of Rs 6 crore will be sanctioned from the CM's relief fund for the disaster victims of Wayanad, covering the present and future medical expenses. An additional 49 families will be included in the Wayanad rehabilitation list. Compensation will be provided to entrepreneurs who lost their livelihood due to the disaster. Vilangad disaster: Similar to compensation granted to Chooralmala disaster victims, payout will also be provided to Vilangad disaster victims based on the collector's recommendation.

Govt to disburse third instalment of Subhadra scheme funds on Raksha Bandhan
1 2 Bhubaneswar: The Odisha govt will disburse the third instalment of Subhadra Yojana funds, amounting to Rs 5,000, to over one crore beneficiaries on August 9 on Raksha Bandhan in Koraput. "Following the disbursement, the portal will open for fresh registration," deputy chief minister Pravati Parida said on Wednesday. "Those who turned 21 recently will be allowed to apply for the scheme after August 9 on the portal," Parida added. Around two lakh beneficiaries were rejected from receiving the third instalment of the Subhadra scheme for failing various eligibility criteria post-disbursal. "Nearly two lakh beneficiaries, who received the first instalment, were later found ineligible since they own five acres of land, a vehicle or had filed IT returns," Parida said. The govt has decided to conduct a door-to-door field-level survey after August 9 to know the exact reasons behind rejection and assess if they are true or not. "By reopening the portal and reassessing past exclusion, the state govt is keen to address gaps in implementation. After the survey, those who are found eligible will receive the instalments at one go," Parida added. Medical admissions counselling: Dreams take shape for many students from rural T.N.
The hall where the counselling for MBBS and BDS courses under 7.5% reservation for government school students was in progress was filled with mixed emotions of tension, confusion and quiet excitement. But soon the apprehensions gave way to relief as parents and students exchanged smiles as for many of them, it was the first step towards their dream of donning the white coat. Most of the students who walked into Tamil Nadu Government Multi Super Speciality Hospital, Omandurar Estate for the counselling on Wednesday were from rural parts of Tamil Nadu. Many of them - whose parents were into agriculture, weaving, and daily wage labourers - said they had spent in the range of Rs. 30,000 to Rs. three lakh for coaching classes. A. Jeevitha, a resident of Villupuram, was accompanied by her father Azhagappan, a farmer. Securing 566 marks in class XII board examinations and a NEET score of 460 in her second attempt, she chose a MBBS seat in Government Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai. 'I am very happy that she is getting to pursue her dream,' her father said. They spent Rs. 30,000 for private coaching. Sridevi and her sister Nishanthi - residents of Sathyakadanur in Villupuram - have both benefitted from the 7.5% reservation for government school students. While Sridevi secured a medical seat at the Chengalpattu government medical college in Wednesday's counselling after securing a NEET score of 470, Nishanthi, who is currently pursuing engineering, had secured admission under the preferential reservation in 2022. 'My father is an auto driver. This is my third attempt at NEET. Two of my uncles supported me financially to go for NEET coaching. They spent nearly Rs. three lakh,' Ms. Sridevi said. A. Manjula, a resident of Salem, secured admission at Krishnagiri government medical college. In her first attempt at NEET, she secured 270 marks and went on to score 453 in her second attempt. 'We spent Rs. 48,000 for coaching classes,' Ms. Manjula, whose father works in a weaving unit, said. An official, on condition of anonymity, said that majority of the students in the 7.5% reservation category, were NEET repeaters. 'Families spend at least Rs. 1.5 lakh for NEET coaching, and among them, only those who can afford to spend, repeat NEET. So, freshers hailing from poor families stand to lose, and this is not fair. In the beginning, when the 7.5% reservation was introduced, it was mostly freshers who obtained seats for the first two to three years. But in the subsequent years, most of the candidates were repeaters, and the number of freshers reduced,' he said. 'In addition, there is no 7.5% reservation for government school students in paramedical courses, one of the main options for children belonging to Below Poverty Line families. The government should take this into consideration,' he added.
