India's service sector scales new heights towards $5 trillion economy

Hans India14 hours ago
New Delhi: India's service sector is demonstrating a significant role in the country's journey towards becoming a $5 trillion economy, a report said on Monday.
For decades, the sector has not only been contributing massively to India's gross domestic product (GDP) but has also become the key driving force to the nation's economy, rising from 40 per cent contribution in GDP in the 1990s to accounting for 55 per cent gross value added (GVA) in FY25, according to the Axis Mutual Fund's 'Service Sector Report'.
'From contributing approximately 40 per cent of India's GDP in the early 1990s, the service sector surged to account for 50.6 per cent of India's gross value added (GVA) in FY14. This dominance has only amplified, reaching an estimated 55 per cent in FY25," the report stated.
All verticals of the service sectors, including information technology (IT) services, finance and banking, healthcare, telecommunications, and e-commerce, have shown immense growth in the last two decades.
IT services grew from $8 billion in 2000 to $245 billion in FY24, with further expansion to $300 billion expected by FY26.
The digital revolution gave a magic shift to the Banking Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) sector, with mutual fund AUM growing at over 20 per cent CAGR over the past decade to reach Rs 72.19 lakh crore in May 2025, the Axis Mutual Fund report said.
The healthcare market size is projected to reach $370 billion by 2027, with 62 per cent year-on-year growth reported in March 2025 alone.
The telecom sector has seen data consumption per user soar 450 times since 2014, reaching 28 GB per month in 2025, and the e-commerce market is expected to triple from $103 billion in 2024 to $325 billion by 2030, it added.
India's nominal GDP doubled in in last decade (2015-2025). In FY25, it reached to nearly $3.97 trillion and is estimated to surge to around $4.19 trillion by the end of the calendar year, providing a formidable foundation for the service sector's expansion.
Rapid digitisation under the 'Digital India' initiative, proactive government policies including ease of doing business policies, liberalisation in foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms, and sector-specific incentives have been creating a fertile ground for the upscale of the service sector, the report said.

Sebi Plans to Heighten Derivatives Surveillance

Live Events The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is planning to enhance its surveillance system to check manipulation in the derivatives market, chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey said on Monday. This follows the regulator barring US-based proprietary trader Jane Street from the securities market for allegedly generating illegal profits by manipulating indices through large derivatives positions.'This (Jane Street case) is essentially a surveillance issue,' Pandey said on the sidelines of an event. 'Surveillance mechanisms will be upgraded further to strengthen oversight.' He added that monitoring will continue at Sebi's as well as stock exchange levels.'Manipulative practices can be worked out by different players in different ways,' Pandey said. 'There is no one particular way in which you have to assess. Our regulations clearly mention that manipulative and fraudulent practices are not allowed in the market, and within the regulations, Sebi has all powers to investigate and act.'The chairman appeared to be of the view that such practices aren't widespread. 'There may not be many more such cases,' he said in response to a question on whether other funds may have manipulated the markets in a similar week, Sebi ordered the seizure of what it said were 'illegal gains' made by Jane Street to the tune of Rs 4,844 crore ($570 million) in one of the toughest punitive actions against an international trader. It's likely the largest amount thus impounded by the entities tied to Jane Street Group — JSI Investments, JSI2 Investments, Jane Street Singapore and Jane Street Asia Trading — have been prohibited from dealing in securities, directly or Street, which started its India operations in 2020, made a profit of about $4.3 billion between January 2023 and March 2025, the period under review, on its India regulator's finding is that the NSE's Bank Nifty Index — comprising stocks of India's top dozen lenders — was manipulated in a complex and illegal manner aided by JS Group's immense trading, financial and algorithmic Street would drive up prices with heavy buying in the morning and send them down through a selling spree later in the day, according to Sebi. It also sought to push index levels down with heavy sell orders close to the option expiry, the regulator found that Bank Nifty options alone contributed Rs 17,319 crore, amounting to 40% of the total index option's profits.

Their decision stems from India's tough stand against Chinese FDI, which needs multi-ministerial nod under Press Note 3 move could also be attributed to continued business related conflicts such as the neighbouring country's rare earth magnet export curbs imposed on India, among other Press Note 3 norms were issued after the border clashes with China in 2020. Since then only a handful of large Chinese companies have received such clearances.'There is no denying that China is far ahead in large-scale component technology manufacturing, but we are careful about the government stand, as not just the initial investment will need government clearance, but even the subsequent ones. Such clearances will take a lot of time, impact our plans and incentive payout under the scheme,' said a CEO of one of the largest players in the industry.'So, wherever we have found the technology in Taiwan and South Korea, we would use that while for others we are still dependent on China. But we are trying to negotiate for a technical alliance or a minority shareholding with them,' he said, requesting Enterprises will put in Rs 4,000 crore application under component manufacturing scheme which will be invested through the tenure of the scheme, CEO Jasbir Singh part of a joint venture with South Korea's Korea Circuit, a Rs 3,000 crore application for manufacturing of high density interface and semiconductor substrates and a Rs 1,000 crore application for printed circuit board manufacturing will be submitted, said Singh. Delhi's 5th waste-to-energy plant at Bawana gets environmental nod — despite protests by residents

The Union Environment Ministry has granted environmental clearance (EC) to a proposed Waste-to-Energy Plant (WTE) in Bawana, making it the fifth such facility set to come up in Delhi. The clearance was granted on June 20 and was made public by the Delhi Pollution Control Committee this week — despite staunch opposition by local residents who have raised environmental and health concerns. As per the EC report, the 30-megawatt plant is to be developed under a public-private partnership with Jindal Urban Waste Management (Bawana) Limited in Sector 5 of the Bawana Industrial Area in Northwest Delhi. There are four other WTE plants in the city — Okhla, Ghazipur, Tehkhand and Narela. The 15-acre plot where the proposed plant is to be developed was allotted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in February under a concession agreement, the report stated. As per the report, the plant will process 3,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste (MSW) per day using refuse-derived fuel (RDF). The firm has also committed to ensuring that 'no groundwater shall be used for the proposed project' and that it will operate under a 'zero liquid discharge' system. While pitched as a key step in addressing the city's waste crisis, the Rs 660-crore project (capital cost) has been met with continued protests. A JJ colony is located within a kilometre of the proposed project site. During a mandatory public hearing last December, residents objected to the facility and flagged worsening air quality, health risks, and waste handling concerns. As per the EC report, one of the concerns flagged was: '… Pollution is at its peak, and we, the residents, especially those who are living near the industrial area, are already exhausted due to pollution emerging from industrial units.' In response, as per the report, the company stated that an 'Ambient Air Quality Monitoring System will be installed in the plant to track pollution levels and ensure compliance with environmental regulations…' Flagging health concerns, residents pointed to an already 'big landfill' in the area and noted that the local air quality index remained in the 'dangerous zone'. The company responded that the development of any new landfill sites had already been disallowed by the Delhi High Court, the EC report noted. The company further assured that 'all emission parameters from the plant shall be within prescribed limits,' and reiterated the installation of pollution monitoring systems for ongoing compliance. The issue of job creation was also raised by the community, many of whom asked whether the project would lead to local employment. The company, as per the report, noted the suggestion and stated that 'employment will be provided to local people'. Another area of concern was the large-scale handling of waste and the potential impact on sanitation and worker safety. Addressing this, the company stated that municipal waste would be brought into the facility in closed hook loaders and stored in an enclosed pit maintained under negative pressure to prevent odour. 'The WTE plant will not emit odour,' the company said, as per the report, adding that a leachate management system and odour control sprays would be implemented. The EC was granted based on standard and specific conditions applicable to thermal power projects, including compliance with the Environment Impact Assessment Notification, 2006. A natural nallah passes through the site. As per the EC, it will not be diverted. Instead, a green buffer will be developed along its banks and stormwater management systems will be installed. The project also includes a Material Recovery Facility, ash handling systems, and an RDF fuel pit. Non-recyclable ash and rejects will be sent to sanitary and secured landfills designated by the MCD.
