'Anak Kita' Programme Boosts Academic Achievements Of At-risk Students

NIBONG TEBAL, July 14 (Bernama) -- The Anak Kita Programme (PAK) is on the right track in supporting at-risk students, helping them regain confidence and succeed in their studies, ultimately improving their academic performance, said Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. She said that the intervention programme has proven effective, with 460 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 candidates from 11 schools in Penang showing excellent performance, following continuous support provided over the past year. She added that 99 per cent of the students sat for the SPM, and 93 per cent successfully obtained their certificates, particularly in core subjects such as Bahasa Melayu and History, in Penang. 'PAK is a national intervention programme, which is both comprehensive and targeted, involving collaboration between the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Ministry of Finance (MOF), and various strategic partners,' she told reporters, after visiting Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Taman Widuri, here, today. She added that, as of mid-2025, the implementation of PAK in Penang, covering 1,280 students across 64 schools, has shown significant positive developments. A total of 71 per cent of students recorded grade improvements in Bahasa Melayu, while 44 per cent showed progress in History. For Mathematics, one of the most challenging subjects, 13 per cent of students managed to improve their grades. The programme is being implemented in a structured manner, combining online tuition sessions with small-group learning activities, providing additional academic support for SPM students who need it most. Commenting further, Fadhlina said that the programme takes a holistic approach, which caters to students' specific needs, offering tailored interventions, personal coaching and subject-focused support, as well as psycho-social assistance and counselling. 'We believe this holistic intervention will have a broader impact, and will continue to be expanded. Likewise, we remain committed to sustaining and strengthening these efforts over time,' she said.

Indonesian Search Teams Confirm Ferry Wreckage Discovery

JAKARTA, July 14 (Bernama) -- Indonesian authorities have located the wreckage of the KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya ferry, which sank on the night of July 2 in the Bali Strait near Ketapang in Banyuwangi, East Java, officials said. Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said plans were underway to salvage the ferry, which was found roughly 3.9 kilometres from its last known position. 'The salvage operation will follow strict procedures to ensure team safety amid strong underwater currents. We hope it proceeds smoothly to support the investigation,' he said in a statement. bootstrap slideshow The ferry's location was officially confirmed on July 12, when divers using modified equipment captured clear images of the overturned wreck on their third attempt, showing the ship's name, hull and ramp, according to a report from the Naval Information Service. The discovery followed a search that began on July 9, involving the Navy and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), when the hydro-oceanographic survey vessel KRI Spica-934 detected an underwater object at a depth of 50 metres. Follow-up scans confirmed the object matched the ferry's dimensions, but an attempt on July 11 to inspect it with a remotely operated vehicle was hindered by strong currents, the report said. As of Monday – the final day of the joint SAR operation involving Basarnas, the military, police and local fishing communities – the team had recovered 48 people, including 30 survivors and 18 confirmed dead, one of whom was a Malaysian national. The ferry, carrying 12 crew members, 53 passengers and 22 vehicles, sailed on July 2 from Ketapang Port to Bali's Gilimanuk Port before issuing a distress call at 11.20 pm and sinking 15 minutes later. Search efforts will continue under Basarnas and regional authorities from Tuesday, with some passengers, including those not listed, still missing.

159 UiTM Sabah Students Receive Financial Aid Under MOHE-PTPTN MADANI Programme

KOTA KINABALU, July 14 (Bernama) -- A total of 159 underprivileged students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sabah today received a one-off financial assistance of RM500 each to ease their financial burden. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said the RM79,500 allocation was disbursed under the MOHE-PTPTN MADANI Education Assistance Programme, a joint initiative by the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE) and the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN). 'This initiative is a positive step towards ensuring that all eligible students have access to quality education regardless of their financial background, in line with MOHE and PTPTN's commitment to strengthening higher education in Malaysia. 'The aid reflects MOHE and PTPTN's concern for students in need of financial support to pursue their dreams,' he said at the presentation ceremony held at the university. Zambry said the aid was contributed by various parties through PTPTN and subsequently distributed to deserving students. He also encouraged parents to open National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) accounts for their children's future education needs. 'Parents can open an account as soon as their child is born and start saving gradually. Over time, the amount will grow and can later be used to fund higher education,' he said. Meanwhile, PTPTN in a statement issued after the event said that since the programme's introduction in 2022, a total of RM981,000 has been disbursed to benefit 1,962 students across 16 public universities. -- BERNAMA
