By: Bernama Text Size: PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has confirmed that the investigation into former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob ( pic ) has been completed, and a forfeiture application for cash amounting to RM170 million is expected to be filed within the next two weeks. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the investigation papers have been submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers, and the Deputy Public Prosecutor has agreed to proceed with the application for forfeiture of the cash. 'The affidavit application and related documents are being prepared. It is up to Ismail Sabri to challenge our application,' he said at a press conference at the MACC headquarters here today. However, Azam clarified that no decision has been made yet regarding criminal charges against the country's ninth prime minister. Ismail Sabri had previously appeared at the MACC headquarters several times to assist in investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering involving the use and procurement of funds for promotion and publicity of the Keluarga Malaysia programme during his administration from August 2021 to November 2022. Azam said the MACC had also recorded a statement from Ismail Sabri's former son-in-law, Datuk Jovian Mandagie, in relation to the investigation into the former prime minister's asset ownership.
Advertisement The investigation followed a directive for Ismail Sabri to declare his assets under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act 2009. The declaration was made on Feb 10, and the MACC is now analysing the sources of the declared assets. Following that, the MACC seized RM170 million in cash in various foreign currencies — including Baht, Riyal, Pound Sterling, Won, Euro, Swiss Franc and Yuan — and confiscated 16 kilogrammes of pure gold bars estimated to be worth RM7 million, as part of the corruption and money laundering probe against the former prime minister. The seizures were made during raids at a residence and office believed to have been used as a 'safehouse', based on investigations into four of Ismail Sabri's former senior officers who were detained in February. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Incest: Farmer gets 45 years, 15 lashes

Published on: Tuesday, July 01, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 01, 2025 By: Marutin Ansiung Text Size: Each charge was framed under Section 376(2)(d) of the Penal Code. KENINGAU: A 40-year-old farmer was sentenced to 45 years in jail and 15 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court here on three counts of incest against daughter, who has an intellectual disability, on Monday. The man pleaded guilty before Judge Ahmad Fairuz Mohd Puzi to committing the offence against his 14-year-old biological daughter, who is a registered person with an intellectual disability in August 2024, at a house in a village in Tambunan. Ahmad sentenced the man to 15 years in jail and five strokes of the cane for each charge. The court ordered Ahmad to serve the imprisonment sentence consecutively. Each charge was framed under Section 376(2)(d) of the Penal Code. Counsel Timothy Daut, representing the man, requested a lenient sentence, stating that he had admitted his wrongdoing and repented. Timothy also submitted that the man had no prior criminal record and was willing to undergo rehabilitation. Deputy Public Prosecutor Ling Guong Zhin urged the court to impose a heavier sentence to serve as a deterrent to society. The court heard that the man was arrested by police on Aug 29, 2024, following a report lodged by the Tambunan Health Clinic. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Kota Kinabalu: Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek has called on the younger generation to play a proactive role in preserving and strengthening indigenous languages, particularly in Sabah where ethnic and linguistic diversity is rich. She said many young people in the state still lack fluency in their native tongues, and urged them to take up the responsibility of keeping these languages alive. 'Our main focus is to ensure the survival of various local languages in Sabah—such as Bajau, Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Iranun and others—by encouraging the younger generation to learn and master them,' she said. Fadhlina was speaking at the 69th Anniversary Celebration of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), held at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC),here, on Saturday. She said DBP's long-standing contribution in preserving knowledge and promoting the Malay language had reached a mature stage, and its role must now expand with stronger commitment and relevance. 'With age comes boldness—69 years is a significant milestone for DBP. The introduction of the standard framework for Bahasa Melayu reflects the government's dedication to elevate its status across all sectors, as the national language with intellectual and cultural value,' she said. Fadhlina also highlighted the role of technology in advancing language mastery and ensuring the nation is not left behind in the digital age. 'Artificial intelligence, for example, is a crucial tool in our efforts to empower language,' she said, while also expressing admiration for Sabah's many talented writers and literary figures. Quoting the Prime Minister, she said: 'The strength of a nation lies in knowledge, intellect and language—key elements in building a civilisation, embodied in the phrase 'language is the soul of a nation'. Also present at the event was the Head of State, Tun Datuk Seri Musa Aman. The ceremony also saw the launch of a biography on a notable DBP figure and the unveiling of the National Language Research Index. The event was further enlivened with exhibitions and booths featuring a wide range of DBP publications and educational materials. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
