Six NGOs reject claim they back Opposition's anti-Anwar rally

KUALA LUMPUR: Six civil society organisations have distanced themselves from tomorrow's planned "Turun Anwar" protest, saying a recent meeting with Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin was unrelated to any political rally.
In a joint statement today, Bersih, the Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4), Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS), Projek Sama, Pusat Komas, and Transparency International Malaysia clarified that their meeting with Hamzah on July 1 was solely to discuss institutional reforms.
They said the engagement was part of their regular advocacy efforts and should not be interpreted as support for any political movement.
"On this basis, we reject any mid-term change of government through the back door, such as the Sheraton Move that threw the country's politics into disarray in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Even if there is a change of government, the new administration may lack clarity or commitment to implement institutional reforms, or may be too fragile to undertake any meaningful change," they said in the joint statement.
The organisations issued the statement to clarify concerns over their meeting with the Opposition leader, which was cited during a recent press conference in Parliament as implied support for tomorrow's protest.
While affirming their support for the right to peaceful assembly, the groups stressed that calls for reform would be meaningless without improvements to political stability and the broader political system.
"We firmly believe the country needs comprehensive, strong, and meaningful institutional reforms for society to move forward with a more just and improved political system."
They added that all parties — both in government and in the opposition — must uphold a genuine reform agenda.
They also called on the opposition to fulfil its responsibility as a check-and-balance force in Parliament.
"The opposition is duty-bound to the rakyat to serve as a check and balance for the betterment of the nation.
"Malaysia has so much to offer internationally, and this can only happen if we uphold the values of human rights, good governance, and accountability."
They reaffirmed their commitment to pursuing institutional reform and said they would continue engaging with all political parties on the matter.
"Our position is crucial as a check-and-balance mechanism for the reform agenda of any political coalition."

'Turun Anwar' rallygoers began trickling into Dataran Merdeka area

KUALA LUMPUR: Rallygoers and members of Pas' Unit Amal have begun trickling into Dataran Merdeka and its surrounding areas. Around 100 people, some wearing "Turun Anwar" t-shirts, were seen gathering near Masjid Negara, while Pas' Unit Amal members could be seen preparing for the rally at Dataran Merdeka. Near Masjid Negara, some rallygoers had set up shops to sell t-shirts. Though rallygoers are prohibited from bringing children, some could be seen among the crowd. Police anticipate a turnout of between 10,000 and 15,000 people at today's rally. Participants are set to gather at Masjid Negara, Pasar Seni, Masjid Jamek Sultan Abdul Samad, Masjid Jamek Kampung Baru, and Kompleks Sogo — before converging at Dataran Merdeka. Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the police would facilitate the assembly. A total of 16 roads will be closed for the rally, which is expected to end after 5.15pm. The police have advised the public to plan their journeys in advance and use public transport where possible to avoid congestion in the city centre.

RM100 aid meaningful for vulnerable groups, says PBB man

Ariffin Mohamad MIRI (July 26): The RM100 Sara cash aid may seem modest, but it can make a meaningful difference for Malaysia's most vulnerable groups, said Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Piasau branch chairman Ariffin Mohamad. While some critics have dismissed the federal government's RM100 one-off assistance as inadequate, Ariffin, who is also Deputy Miri Mayor, argued that 'every ringgit counts' for families struggling with the rising cost of living. 'I believe that with any one-off assistance like this, we simply cannot please everyone. RM100 may seem like nothing to some, but for others, especially those struggling to make ends meet, such as senior citizens, single mothers, daily wage earners, or those who've lost their jobs, it can go a long way in easing their burden,' he said. Ariffin also praised the direct crediting of the aid via MyKad, calling it an efficient and inclusive approach. 'I view this as a short-term relief measure by the Federal Government to inject immediate assistance to the people. 'The decision to credit the aid directly through MyKad without requiring applications is a practical and efficient way to ensure wide and fast distribution, especially to those in rural areas or without digital access,' he added. However, he stressed the need for clear public communication to ensure all eligible recipients understand how to use the aid and are aware of the usage deadline. The RM100 initiative is part of the Madani Government's broader cost-of-living relief package, which also includes fuel price reductions and a freeze on toll rate hikes. Still, some rural representatives in Sarawak have urged Putrajaya to tailor such rollouts to local contexts, noting that the needs and challenges in Sarawak differ from those in Peninsular Malaysia. While acknowledging the value of short-term aid, Ariffin emphasised the importance of long-term planning tailored to Sarawak's unique development needs. 'As at the state level, I believe GPS has always stayed true to its struggle — to protect Sarawak's rights, to fight for greater autonomy, and to ensure that Sarawakians are not left behind in national policies,' he said. He highlighted Gabungan Parti Sarawak's (GPS) focus on sustainable growth through initiatives such as the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), rural infrastructure development, improved internet access via the Sarawak Digital Economy Strategy, and state-led enterprises like Petros and the Sarawak Sovereign Wealth Future Fund. 'Over the years, GPS has focused on strengthening Sarawak's economy through these various initiatives to ensure Sarawak's wealth is managed for long-term benefit,' he said. Looking ahead, he stressed the need to strike a balance between immediate support and sustainable policy reforms. 'That is why for me, beyond short-term aid like this, what truly matters is continuing to push for policies that are fair to and reflect the real needs of our people — not just for today, but for generations to come,' said Ariffin.
